Think so, Hung. I knew of Corben Simpson in Auckland and saw him from afar in the street. He was (like most of us there) down on his luck as I know it. His musicianship was very admired. It was on the street I was told he had a decent hit with this song. I have never heard it performed. Thanks Hung. 🙂

Tubular Bells is so enchanting. It is a mystery to me how composition takes the soul so that such a raft of sounds and instruments is mastered.

It would be interesting if these one hit wonders were played again now for all to hear. Wonder how people would rate them. I reckon some could hold their own quite well. Can I rip these to a CD to play in my car?? Any help would be very welcome.

How do you listen to music at the moment Viv?

Mostly in my car when not at home. Listening to stuff on here too of course. I put a CD on and play it. I don’t have an ipod or any other gadget – don’t want to plug something my ear. My car is like a sound booth and I can play it as loud as I like and often as I like. I used to play LPs at home but the player died (fixed twice and then died for good) – since then hubby retired and is at home (when not at car racing which is where he is right now) and I don’t have the freedom I once had. He is into classical and I’m not.

While I’ve got your attention, listen to this….It’s great. I had wanted to post ‘MALK’, the title track from their album., however couldn’t find it on YouTube.
They have those elements of funk; string (synthesised) , beat, harmony and gaiety. Malk is exceptional. Want to feel good?……Turn it up. Even some Raul Malo undertones.

Could appreciate ‘My Sharona’ in terms of musical technique, Hung, but never really ‘dug’ it all that much…

Hung, I’m the same age as you! Yes I heard all these on the radio though “Walking my cat named dog” is obscure. I’m suprised Vectis thought twice about “Tar and Cement”

Telstar definately it came out in 1962. Would have been 8 to 10 for the rest though. Would have been in my teens or 20 for the 70’s list though.

Fair enough. I lived in Armidale before going to Wollongong so we listened to radio a lot, no TV, some tunes really take me back, remember the Mash Potato?

I do Hung, you could post it. We always had a TV. Father worked for Philips so they were able to buy at discounted rates. Didn’t have a phone until I was 18. Mrs A lived in country WA they didn’t have much in the way of TV either.

Like Vectis Lad, I haven’t heard of two of these, Algernon… but the three I have heard of are real classics:
“Telstar” I once performed in front of my class a capella… to stares of bewilderment from both teacher and fellow students, none of whom had ever heard of such a thing before (for that matter, neither had I!) But we’d been asked by the teacher to give a rendition of our favorite pop records and that was one of mine at the time (via my mum’s collection, of course!) Unless I’m much mistaken, the ‘Tornadoes’ lead guitarist was Hank Marvin, who was also, of course, lead guitarist with Cleft Pilchard’s band, ‘The Shadows’…
Desmond Dekker’s “The Israelites” is a reggae classic which still rocks with the best of ’em! Gotta listen to this one at MAX VOL!
And I’d like to convince Hung that we should include ‘2525’ in the Burnside Refugees’ repertoire, in spite of the two (or is it three?) half-shift key changes… It’s not that hard to play really… Honest Hung!
Nice contribution Algernon, and thanks… I’ll listen to these tomorrow at a somewhat more civilized hour; then I’ll be able to give them the volume they deserve! Looking forward to playing the other two too… intriguing titles. Oh ‘Tar and Cement’ I’ve heard of too, but didn’t really think it was much of a ‘hit’ (Even though I love rock’n’roll, some of those really old rockers, you gotta wonder what people were thinking to buy the records!)

I picked these in the context of of being one hit wonders, Asty. In the year 2525 and Israelites would be up there with some of my favourites from the sixties Telstar wouldn’t be far behind. Walking my cat named dog is very left I know. Tar and Cement though, I thought that to be pretty mainstream.

That was a record that I put on to open gigs in Mallorca. I did a stint as a disc-jockey in an open air club and used to play it turning up and down trying to get all the Swedish & German (girls) tourists calling out “FIRE”…..(amongst other things.)
It was a great trck. Actually it & he was a prototype for other outlandish stagecraft…IMHO.
