Rangitoto Island (LHS) and its built causeway to Motutapu Island visible in the background of Browns Island.
53 volcanoes gave Tāmaki its raised and sensual form and cone islands at its coastline. Patterns of dark and light caused by shape-shifting cloud bend imagination this land is rising and falling and rising with breath and movement. 600 years ago Rangitoto erupted out of the sea. A group of footprints impressed in ash spilled on ancient Motutapu.

you fed us when we were hungry
your shoreline gave us the ocean’s shells
our family ran to the place where the canoes were
we washed away in them.
a low tide combined with diffused light abstracts the coastline and sky one late afternoon.

On one hand it interested me footprints have been identified in the ash on Motutapu. It intrigued me more when I read there is no evidence harm had befallen any of the people. I dunno. At the very least I would be frightened near witless. 🙂
That is the birthing of the idea. The time it took me to shape it and fit it bends my mind to remember it. 🙂

Thanks Sandshoe. These are great photos, considering that you took them from a passenger jet plane. Interesting sound too. I’ve never heard the angry voice of a disturbed volcano before 🙂

The light was fortunate I imagine, hph. The photos were taken with a very basic camera. What a wonderful vision it is flying into NZ, the approach to the coastline and its distinctive shape too that I have reserved for perhaps another such interval…episode.
Now after choosing a link I understand the sound must be a seductive element for the vulcanologist wanting to get close. Wellll … bit subjective that comment. I listened to a lot of volcanos to choose one. 🙂 Thanks hph.
