Fabulous list, Algernon. I’m a staunch atheist, but, for reasons which escape me, I love gospel music. Perhaps just for it’s place in forming pop, rock, jazz??

Thanks Big M glad you’ve enjoyed it. I was hoping I got that across. Its place influencing, pop, soul, rock jazz etc.

I have an album in my collection by Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama, great stuff. Will listen to most of this today. Looks a great list, not a Beyonce fan though, not really a fan of too many chick singers, Joni Mitchell more my cup of tea.

I had an Elvis Presley clip for the same thing but preferred the Beyonce version and replaced it. I’m with you on her, but this is worth a look. The Blind Boys of Alabama here is good if just for the back up singers.

I thought so. But then I haven’t heard a bad Leon Bridges song.

Leon has been in the song lists before hasn’t he? Might have to invest in an album of his for my collection.

Indeed he has. Pops up occasionally one the lists. He has some new stuff coming out in the coming weeks. Might even get a whole album presented out of it.

Asty did you even look at the list or are you just reacting to the word, gospel. A few things, I’ve been posting lists here now most weeks for about 7 years and apart from the odd Gospel song here and there I have never posted a Gospel list. Before I sent this list through I checked with Emm to make sure it would be OK.
I prepared this list as a musical style after all most the great Soul singers had their origins in Gospel or Blues, Aretha Franklin produced a Gospel album at the height of her success. The Blues Brothers and Beyonce are both from films. The Clash included a Gospel style tune on the album it came from which included many musical styles. The Blind boys of Alabama more blues than most finish their concert with that song, the list of backing singers will surprise most on this version.
Paul Kelly regularly finishes with that particular tune, he’s not a man of faith but is influenced by the music of his upbringing. The Charles Bradley tune is Soul. The rest are spiritual standards or interpretations.
Asty I’m not winding you up at all or anyone else for that matter. I prepare lists for the enjoyment of anyone who comes by here. The regular barflies who comment and the majority who come and listen but don’t comment. Also the accompaning picture should be a giveaway.
I keep an open mind when listening to music, some styles I like some I don’t. It’s the same for most here.

Okay Algae; fair enough… and yes, I DID look at the list.
I just thought it was remarkably coincidental after my last post to MJ.
I was just checking… and I DID phrase my last post to you as a question.
I didn’t used to mind a bit of ‘soul’ or even ‘gospel’ in my younger days, and I still quite like the music for the harmonies; it’s just that some of their lyrics annoy the shit out of me these days.
Nowadays I’m VERY MUCH ANTI-fairy-tales… Unless they are honest fairy-tales which admit their status as such. Something the religions don’t do.
I’ve been spending a lot of time – maybe too much time (good song that one, by the Magic Band…) – arguing against fundamentalists, pre-suppositional apologists and flat-earthers lately (It’s a dirty job, but someone HAS to do it! Or the world would be swamped with bullshit). It’s possible this futile exercise has left me a little short on humor. (Not helped by a couple of nights lack of sleep due to an awful toothache, too…)
And Mike HAS, more than once, recently used the vehemence of my non-belief to wind me up; I was beginning to feel like I was in a tag-wrestling match without a partner!
But no worries; I’ll take your word that you’re not just winding me up… But I think I’ll still give this list a miss.
Later, Algae… 🙂

Asty, I would never intentionally wind anyone up over their beliefs, so if I have offended you or anyone else, I most sincerely apologise.
I am a student of Buddhist dharma. Belief or even vehement disbelief in one or more gods is a matter of personal choice.
Buddhism does not require one to BELIEVE anything.
I choose neither. I’m a scientist by training and a natural skeptic. I see no more reason to disbelieve in a god than I do to believe in one.
Buddhism as I understand the teachings does consider skilful thought, speech and actions as important expressions of intent and outcome.
But winding someone up is not skilful. Neither is allowing oneself to be wound up.
Cheers, bro.

Well… perhaps ‘teasing’ would be a better word… Apology accepted; thanks Mike.
I appreciate Buddhism for pretty much the same reasons you do; in fact, Buddhism (and Taoism), in their more intellectual formulations are actually atheistic philosophies anyway… and I still think of myself, more or less, as a ‘Taoist’.
In fact, once upon a time, as an anthropologist (albeit an amateur one) I used to say that “I neither believe nor disbelieve…” and I still actually feel pretty much the same way, but because this ‘agnosticism’ was taken by the fundies as a sign that “You really DO believe…” I have felt obliged to adopt a somewhat more radical position, if only to separate myself from the real fairy-tale believers.
No… winding someone up is not ‘skilful’, or nice… nor is ‘being wound up’; normally I would not have reacted so strongly, if at all… as I said, a couple of sleepless nights due to a severe toothache didn’t help matters. (Pain and sleeplessness CAN make one grouchy!)
But I’ve just returned from a beautiful afternoon’s kayak fishing at West Lakes and the toothache is a bit more bearable now (thanks mostly to a combination of salt-water rinses, oil of cloves and my good ol’ Panadeine Fortes!) so I’m feeling much better now… I only caught (and released) a couple of small bream, but I was also experimenting with an underwater camera this time; if I have any footage worth saving I’ll post it on my YT page and post a link to it here for the piglets.
I apologize to both Algae and yourself if my being in pain has caused me to be a ‘bit of a pain’… With a little luck I might even get a good night’s sleep tonight and, if so, I might even feel up to giving some of the above list a listen tomorrow.
Later dudes… got a lot of video footage to watch and process.

G’day Algae, and all the other Piglets too!
It’s been a while, I’m not entirely sure why I couldn’t log onto the Pigs’ Arms fore the last couple of years, so I’m not sure how I was alienated from it either, but if you get this message (and I hope you do!), I’M BACK!
If you think this message is good please and you’re glad to hear from me, please ‘like’ and let me know… otherwise I’m likely to disappear into the mists of time forever, never to reappear, even to those friends I love most in this benighted world…
Seems like forever since I was here… and I’m not sure what to say. From my last memories of this pub I think I probably owe ‘Shoe an apology… you know I love ya really Shoe… dontcha? (Seems you once knew it, anyway!) So I’m sorry about any and all misunderstandings there may have been between us. Please try to get in touch again… I miss you. (As I do all the Piglets!)
Anyway, lots of love to you ALL! (Especially to you, ‘Shoe’… Hope you feel the same!)
From Astyages….
If you don’t want to hear from me any more, please just ignore this post and I probably won’t post anything further… ‘Bye for now, but hopefully not forever…
Dave.
