The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Excellent. 8 days and Parrothead and his band will be history. Problem is its a bit of a Hobsons choice this election.
Still we could be stuck with a 28 year old boy who’s only jobs outside the Liberal Party didn’t get through their probation period and as Mayor couldn’t get up in front of a crowd and make a speech. Hopefully though the vote will mirror the federal election.

There was a story on LinkedIn about a Glasgow woman who had used all her savings and was relying on food banks. The local food bank ran out of food. She was found dead when her malnourished baby’s crying alerted neighbours.
And can you believe it !!! She lived in a Tory held electorate.
And the baby’s father was surprised to hear the news. Total arsehole.

Having been faced with homelessness at one stage, I don’t find the issue particularly funny. I was actually referring to the ad, which I thought was very clever. Used a lot of sarcasm to explain the situation that is not going to get better while we were allowing politicians to have property portfolios.

Did you hear the Tories squawking over paying fair tax on super growth on portfolios over $3 mill ? Albo shoved it to them. First it impacts less than 0.5% of taxpayers, second it will pull in a few billion bucks, third it comes in after the next election. No Joe Public would give a shit what taxes the super rich pay- and Albo is a shoe in next election.
I agree with you. Scare tactics from the Tories about capital gains tax on the family home- but tax away investment properties, bring in tenant protection and FFS build affordable public housing.
The Guardian had a piece where the byline was “in a country as large as Australia with abundant natural resources and huge export food output, and shitloads of free solar power, no Aussie should have to get by on scraps and without a home”

I’ve donated to them for quite a while but last year did not. In silent protest for cutting discussion short, not opening it up etc. I’m pissed off.

Me too. No longer make a donation for the same reason. One of my other pet hates is an open discussion on British sports but a limited discussion on Australian sports. Question is, do they really want an Australian edition or what?

Did it again today, then decided to pre moderate. Meant my post got pulled. Shortly after they shut it down, however, it might have something to do with the death of Cardinal Nonce.
Over at the SMH, they didn’t post my, no great loss, covered up a multitude of sins. They prefer positive posts about him.

No discussion on Pell. Not a reason. They should just own up don’t have enough staff or something. Lots of sports comments and I doubt moderation. Maybe the live blog doesn’t need moderation by the minute, just every ten minutes. We are not all that bad. They still let a lot of shit through.

Got to ask the question why was Renshaw picked when they knew he had COVID! The whole selection seems weird to me.
Had COVID myself before Christmas, tested negative Christmas Eve.

Doesn’t sound right to me about Renshaw. I’m glad he got back in the team but if he tested +ve prior to the game starting then why would you pick him. He is better than Harris anyway. I was feeling like I had a fever but the RAT test was negative. The problem here is the influx of tourists. Everywhere you go is packed and they increase the chances of getting Covid. On the cricket blog, it’s interesting the fuss over running the batsman out at the bowler’s end. I think that rule is fine. And you are right, the batsman always gets the benefit of the doubt. Has been that way since I was a kid. The cat comment, hilarious, and as you say, we would be the only ones that get it.

Exactly why would you pick him if he had covid. He was feeling unwell the night before the test and you weren’t announcing the team before the toss would you pick him. In this case I’d have retained Boland rather than gamble with Renshaw. I’d have had Boland in for Hazelwood anyway given his fitness. Wet weather has saved him I suppose.
I agree about the Mankad, provided the warning is given, as Starc did in the second test. Its drummed into kids at an early age stay in your crease until the bowler is through his action. Its not that hard. I can’t understand how people don’t get the benefit of the doubt thing. Whilst its not necessarily a rule, well it is with LBW, it’s one of the basic principles of the the game. Even the commentators yesterday were saying that batsman always get the benefit of the doubt. I’ve umpired countless games and always if doubt then the benefit goes with the batter. Couldn’t believe the clown talking about taking the fielders word for anything.
Even funnier though was moving the new years test to Hobart! Heck Hobart only has a population of 200k. Some don’t understand why Brisbane and Perth get less tests. It has to do with crowds and the lack of them.
Covid’s a strange thing, affects people differently. Mrs A just felt generally unwell then a temperature the night before she tested positive. She managed to get the antivirals, she was crook for a few days but was negative after week. I had a headache and sore throat that wouldn’t budge, along with a metallic taste in the mouth. I was crook for a day or two but took nine days to test negative. Spoke with a friend who’s husband is now in palliative care, he tested positive and had no signs and didn’t feel crook whilst he had it. Mrs A is now fine, I still have a “COVID” cough.
Anyway be careful of those cats if you think you’ve got covid.
