Here’s one for the superannuated Punks. On Thursday Therese, FM, Algernonina the Elder and I went for a big night out to the Enmore to see Blondie, The Stranglers as well as The Machinations. Here’s a selection of their tunes.

My one time University lecturer in Health Geography (Space and Place) has a barrage of University degrees, a highly developed understanding of training animals using a clicker method and does a gig with ‘Pure Blondie’ in Adelaide. I notice they have a series of concerts coming up in the New Year. I attended one of Lisel’s concerts, one only because the opportunity hasn’t come my way yet to go again. I would like to. It was a fun gig. I liked the beach balls being bounced and the playing around that was interaction with the audience in their show, possible in a small venue with a local crowd. I have a v. daggy photo of myself as a memento.
I envy your opportunity to go to the recent Blondie concert, Algernon and with fine companions.

Its over 20 years since I’ve been to a concert shoe. The companions were fine too.

Yes, I can see when age sets in and stars are loath to accept it. (ashes to ashes and all that) There is a lot to be said about remaining unknown and being able to get about without beiing mobbed by teenage girls screaming for your signature and a piece of out of your jeans.
Years ago, women out of control, would hang around the hotel where they thought Julio Englasia might be staying and spending days and nights going through the rubbish bins hoping to get to hold his underpants.
Leonard Cohen seems to handle age well. At least he remains seated in his chair and doesn’t jig about the stage.

I’ve replied to this below and somehow it ended up under mine!

Blond Harry certainly was something different, especially coming from America, she and Klein(?) were such an attractive couple when young….nice to see they are still friends.
There was something very Marilyn Monroe-ish about her….sexy and innocent at the same time…do you blokes agree? 🙂

Always loved Blondie. Have their best CD in the car.

Yes, I agree too, Helvi. As I said to Algy, her band – of young guns was amazing. Especially the lead guitarist and the drummer. Debbie Harry warmed up a lot in the second half of her set. Some songs were good, but she sadly has lost the spring in her step and she was not exactly setting the stage on fire with her dancing. I reckon stars shouldn’t try to be young and sexy when they clearly aren’t any more. I think old and sexy in an elegant way is a better idea (Dame Helen Mirren and Dame Judy Dench – what a pair of superannuated hotties!) and as FM said, only chicky babes with pert bottoms and great legs can get away with orange pedal pushers and comfortable shoes.
We contrasted Ms Harry with the Grace Jones performance we saw a couple of years ago. Grace had about six stellar costume changes and set a withering pace on the same stage – including a seven minute version of “Slave to the Rhythm” – which she did in 9″ heels, fishnet stockings and a G-string leotard – with several hula hoops – and she didn’t miss a beat or lose a hoop. Several gentlemen of a certain age had to be attended by the paramedics. She was effing awesome. OK she was only 63 and Ms Harry IS 67. I suppose those few years count at this age.
But the Stranglers were truly wonderful. High energy post-punk / Ska of their very own style. And the Machinations opened and ripped into some memorable old favourites. Their lead singer (sorry, fans, I didn’t catch his name…. I know, I ought to know it but I don’t) was airborne for huge chunks of their set. It was their second gig in 30 years – the last one was six months ago. Geriatric energy to burn. Great stuff !

I concur there Emm, The Stranglers (who I was really there to see) were just great they didn’t seem to miss a beat and for mine were the highlight of the evening. I had Algernonina the Younger go with me as Mrs A was unwell on the evening. I was unsure how she’d find it but she enjoyed it. Bought out her inner punk I suppose. She would not have heard The Stranglers except in a peripheral sense I suppose so being able to point out the trademark Stranglers riffs was a joy for me. Se was amazed at the bass guitar solo during Walk on By.
During Blondie she was singing along as well and was amazed by the 4 guitar trash playing before they left stage, great stuff.
I’ve had a though Emm, maybe Debbie Harry was taking the piss and tuning into her inner RSL, after all she wouldn’t have look out of place there.

It was my first concert in I don’t know how long. The bulk of the audience was probably 45 to about 70 or maybe older. Algernonia was pleased she wasn’t the youngest there, saw a few her age. Saw some pre teens as well

In a preview during the week The Stranglers described The Sex Pistols as a boy band with one hit in 35 years. Made me laugh. Enjoy.

Gee The Sex Pistols made a lot dosh out of that one hit, but it didn’t do them a lot of good in the long run. But Malcolm McLaren did fine. Good quip, the Stranglers, eh !
