Panellists:
Tom Switzer. Conservative (right) editor.
Mark Dreyfus. Labor politician.
Noni Hazlehurst. Labor supporter and ex Playschool presenter.
Kelly O’Dwyer. Liberal politican.
Graeme Richardson. Anti-Liberal (Labor?) political commentator and ex political operator in the Labor Party.
Wow! Are good looking younger female politicians being given preferential treatment on the ABC’s Q&A TV program?
Last week they had Tanya Plibersek seated next to a fairly unsympathetic control freak member of and apologist for the right wing press. She is well spoken and only had to make Nice to look good. This week they had Kelly O’Dwyer next to Graeme Richardson. She only had to make a few remarks about behind scenes manoeuvrings in the Labor Party to look good.
But Kelly did more than that. She dominated the discussion. Usually Tony Jones prevents any individual taking control, but her interjections were done so smoothly and always courteously, particularly towards the host. Lesson there for future panellists wanting extra time. (Was there also a bit of that good looking younger woman factor?) Kelly exploited every little slip of her opponents, on one occasion ably assisted by Mark Dreyfus who actually handed her an opening on a platter by addressing a (probably intended as rhetorical) question to her. You have to watch it to see how she used this to absolutely demolish him from a debating point of view. Later she’d gathered so much rope she was in danger of hanging herself with it. But she redeemed her performance by neatly avoiding the trap of dissing Noni Hazlehurst’s views/actions outside the political sphere (unlike that Tom Switzer fellow) even supporting her with a personal story, which always goes down well. Look out Malcolm Turnbull.
By contrast Mark Dreyfus seemed to be wearily going through the motions. Moreover he came out saying Malaysia is a better solution than Nauru because almost everybody sent to Nauru was accepted into Australia! Oh dear. So much for Tanya’s Niceness the week before.
Tom Switzer supported Kelly’s financial pronouncements, sandwiching Mark Dreyfus between them. His borrowed quip about Wayne Swan’s budget demonstrating his adhesion to the Dolly Parton School of economics was rather good although as Tony Jones, who had tried to cut it off, said, no doubt well rehearsed. (An unbelievable figure, blown out of all proportion, with no visible means of support.) Proved he’s no politician however by attacking Noni Hazelhurst’s morals and hence alienating every Australian woman who became a mother in the final quarter of the twentieth century.
Does anyone know whether Richo still holds Labor Party membership BTW? From the little I watch of politics he has positioned himself in the media market as a well-informed honest commentator on Australian politics with insider understanding of the Labor Party. The resultant picture of Labor is not pretty. For example, Richardson said that the reason why Gillard will retain the Labor Party leadership is that the agreement with the 3 independents is a personal agreement between them and herself, not an agreement between them and the Labor Party. He also said “I think Labor has already lost the next election”. Notably he came out in support of onshore processing of boat people (pardon the shorthand). Perhaps he’s trying to destroy Labor in order to build them back up in a reformed version? Or is he just trying to redeem his image?
Now, from the point of view of understanding Australian politics from the inside, we need a Liberal equivalent of Richo. Maybe there is one but I can’t call them to mind.
Noni Hazlehurst tediously established her credentials as a Labor supporter by making a remark about budgie smugglers and big ears. But her remark linking Abbott with two year olds who always say no was at least original, appropriate in the context of her professional background, and got a laugh. Loved her featured reading of the Go The F**k To Sleep book and her background on why she got involved with it. And gotta love her Playschool insider bean spilling on Big Ted.
In the context of a broader question about denigrating the office of Prime Minister, the panellists were asked whether they believe Gillard is being particularly denigrated because she is a woman. Switzer ignored that part of the question. Richo and Dreyfus agreed. Noni agreed but couldn’t make a cogent case as to why, rather disastrously implying that Arabs aren’t good people along the way. I was disappointed that Kelly first ducked the issue then characterised it as a non-problem. But apart from dutifully seizing the opportunity to highlight legitimate political criticism of Gillard, it is risky politics for a female politician to support the ‘female politician as victim’ story. Particularly when the younger female politicians are performing so well on Q&A.

I agree 100%

If you look carefully at the picture of Q&A, (reminds a bit of the last supper, don’t you reckon?) you can see Tony seizing up this O’Dwyer’s large chin and somewhat recoiling from it. He seems taken aback. Of course large chins show determination and willingness to go for blood sweat and cheers.

Nice article Voice:
Give me the quiet persuasiveness and confidence of Penny Wong (or her beauty) above that of Kelly O’Dwyer. Why are all those libs so full of shouting and shoving?
The charm of Kelly O’Dwyer eludes me as does a Besser block. Glad I don’t have to face that huge chin early in the morning. ( jutting above the bed sheets)

I’ve got loads of Penny Wongs in the garden. I bought them at the garden shop. I’ve also got some garden gnomes.
I usually put the wongs next to bamboo, or palms–just to give it an authentic look.

Loved your commentating Voice.
Unfortunately I can’t join in as the only person that I have heard of is Graeme Richardson.
Of course you may not believe, but it’s absolutely true.
Iv’e also just surveyed the comments too.
I don’t know Richard Glover; Jackie Kelly; Tanya Plibespek, or Tony Jones (I know that he runs the programme obviously. I know of Barby Joyce and Christopher Pyne, not mentioned in your story, but by atomou.
Why are you watching all this rubbish? Do you think that it’s going to stop the planet warming, or make you laugh
Did they discuss whether or not the fireman got the cat out of the tree in Bendigo, or was ir all about….well i dunno…nothing I suppose. Still you’ve saved me from EVER tuning into it!!
As for letting your children watch it Algernon….What on earth for? Sounds like torture to me.

Actually, I only skimmed. And yes I saw Malcolm’s name…and should have said so.
The only politics that I am interested in. AND the only politics discussed in an English Pub, is…”what is the government doing?” or, “What do you think of this decision?….ect ect? Nobody ever discusses the opposition, and yes, I’m sorry, but I can’t get used to it. Even after 23 FLAMING years.
It is of no interest what the opposition is saying–or doing. They are NOT governing me.

I see that the riots extended down to Lewisham. A most unsavoury place, and frightfully near to Greenwich.
Should be an interesting couple of days. it’s amazing the mind set that a mob can take on. They get hysterical and throw good sense out of the window.
The world is too full.

Why are we watching this “rubbish,” laddie?
It was one your conservative number -arguably the father of them all- who managed to just redeem his conservatism by uttering one of the most profound political thought that’s become a common aphorism, to wit, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edie Burke -1729-1797. Irish bastard)
So, it behooves us, good men (and women) to do something and in order to do something we must know what these evil bastards are up to. So we watch them in action, or in performance.
Better than “Letters and Numbers” and Lilly’s skirts!
Bonne nuit, mon ami fou, Ladie!

It’s just that I have found everybody…completely and utterly consumed by the actual lives of the politicans. it’s alien to me, because although I have lived here for 23 years, no one that I know talks about it very much. Yes in a run up to the election, but not about the bickering. I am more concerned with the International arena.
But of course you are right to react to my comment about your whole family watching this rubbish. I’m not used to it. it never happened in my home…SORRY….This is a discussion!
It was more David Attenborough or invention, space travel, modern art versus …well anything really, musicals drama. But not politics, in the sense of their personalities. Just ‘IF’ they are a minister, are they carrying out there job?
If they are not a minister then it’s just petty gossip, which I find boring. Now you lot can go for your lives. I am just giving you my point of view…The only one that I have.
As for people making up their own mind…well we all know that childrten mimic their parents to a degree. NOW, don’t take that personally, but it’s undeniable that a Moslem family will bring up their children as Moslems. Or do you disagree with that too?

My children will look to international goings on as well. They also enjoy Richard Attenbourough, they have a wide range of interests. Politics generally isn’t one of them. Youngest spoke with Mrs A about refugees and Malaysia yesterday on her way to school and not from a political perspective. I also have learnt a few things from my son as he grew up. They all have their own interests which some aren’t mine.
The whole family doesn’t watch Q&A, just Algy Junior and I and he only sometimes.
Tonights discussions were about the riots in London, The ups and downs of the stockmarket and certain questions in the census.
And Vectis, I don’t disagree with your last paragraph.

Jackie Kelly is the female version of Wabbit! (spelling variation meant).
She says only what he says when he’s not around to say it… just like all the other Libs from the Wabbit faction. Those not in that faction just shut up. Except Turnbull who says the opposite for a day or two and then wimps back to “I’m in total agreement with Wabbit!”
Jackie Kelly, like her co-factioners, should get a slap across her chops and told what the frustrated mother in the book told her baby: “Shut the penetration up -bitch!”
They’re frustrating that lot. They know they’ve got no argument, so they clog the air with loud, interminable bullshit. Interviewers and panelists should simply interrupt them in a most telling way: Jackie you’re waffling interminably. Stop it or I’ll throw you out -bitch! (Bastard, for the likes of Pyne, Hockey, Barnaby, et al)
I was expecting much more from Dreyfus, alas. I’ve heard him speak a couple of years ago at the National Press, I think and was very impressed. Perhaps he was overwhelmed by the bloated gumption of the libs and the unforgivable quip by Switzer. Penetratingly unforgivable! But that’s where these pricks’ brains are filled with. Memories of mammaries!
A good description of what went on on QANDA last night, vocals! Ta, muchly!

There’s a bit of confusion about the panellists; it was Kelly O’Dwyer, not Jackie Kelly. I blame you, Vivienne!
To be honest, I’d never heard of Ms O’Dwyer before Q&A and Jackie Kelly was a fairly high profile Howard protegé at one time so I think it’s a natural mistake.

I can’t say that I agree with your critique, Voice. Kelly didn’t directly answer any questions, anything she did was the usual Liberal blah blah blah that we’ve come to expect nowadays. I though she was a smart aleck like her former boss. She was unable to artliclate anything, if anything she talked over the top of everyone. Dreyfus on the other hand managed to get his point across clearly with a lot less.
Algernon junior was switching off after about 1/2 and hour when she spoke because she said nothing. That was the consensis on the twitter debate as well. I don’t think she performed that well at all. I tend to think that Tony Jones doesn’t contol these debates as well as he could.

Interesting take on last night’s Q & A. Jackie Kelly actually never answered any question but used the time to repeat the Lib mantras, word perfect. She did it again and again. Why the heck Tony Jones didn’t stop her interrupting others bothers me but seems to be more of being balanced by not being balanced.
