Listened to Billy Paul, ‘me and Mrs Jones’ brought back the Dustin Hoffman movie The Graduate, and of course, the lovely Mrs Robinson…Anne Bening, if I’m right…

Ms Benning is somewhat younger. Here’s a link with a few pics of her from “American Beauty” with Kevin Spacey. She’s married to “You’re So Vain” inspiration Warren Beatty, and just to tickle your fancy, her daughter with him has just chosen to have gender reassignment surgery. Its really different in Hollywood.

Of course , Anne Bancroft…I ‘knew’ I was wrong but too lazy to check…
For me, Anne Bancroft and Anouk Aimee ( of Man and Woman) have a similar , kind of lasting attractiveness…
Saw American Beauty and enjoyed it, always liked Kevin Spacey and the director Sam Mendez who’s English is to thank for that it is not a typical American movie. 🙂

Now everyone knows that Warrigal is a genius so I thank him for allowing a hidden message in this list to link to Steely Dan, who else.

Max Merritt – Dirty Work

Uber-Cool Hung! I hadn’t heard that one before.
But then when I went to play it again it had disappeared, to be replaced by some very badly shot vox pops that did include a brief interview with max.
Wazap’nin?

Twilight Zone moment. Now its back.
There might be dirty work afoot.

You IT mavens with your instant insight into the minor mistakes of the uninitiated. I didn’t even know there was a “back one page” button.
But look, don’t tell me any more at the moment. I’ll need to forget other important stuff to make room.

Wilson Pickett – Don’t the green grass fool you
The O’Jays – Back stabbers
Heres a couple that are also worth a look

Well spotted that man! The Wilson Picket is almost a primer for the sound and the O’jays were of course their principal vehicle. I suppose I should have included “Backstabbers” it’s a definitive track for Philly and G&H.

Hey, but what about Dusty and “Brand New Me”? Perhaps my favourite track after “Going Back”

Yes I did like that. The produced the album A brand new me as wll as the single Silly silly fool as well. I don’t know that I have a favourite Dusty tune, too many to choose from. Like dusty there are also many O’Jays sings to choose from “Back Stabbers” perhaps the most memorable.
I found this which might interest you, their own Internet radio station called “The sounds of Philadephia”

When I watched the Dusty clip, I was distracted from her singing by thoughts about having to find her a good hairdresser.
I also can’t get away from the fact that she reminds me of my English friend Barbara, who we affectionately call Champagne Barbara so as not to confuse her with Summer Perfume Barbara…lovely girls both of them…
I better just listen…and not look 🙂

I think ‘Backstabbers, was in the opening clip.

I just got around to watching the introduction video. I don’t know what gave you the idea, but it was a great one. Very interesting. Funny to see The Jacksons there, nodding their heads. Also Me & Mrs Jones: a great classic.
I liked the format; a lead in and then a selection.
Yup, they were prolific. Tuneful too.

Both their senior sons are in the biz too, though the provenance is a little hard to discern; they’re rappers.

Nice selection Waz. I wonder if the lead singer in The Communards is a castrato.

No, he’s just a little chap with a big heart.

Dunno how he sings that high, he’s not sing falsetto.

That’s a genuine falsetto voice, though Jimmy is somewhat limited in his range. Apparently he has always sung that way, since well before his stones dropped.

Well there you go, I didn’t know. I’ve learnt something today.

Pretty rare to be able to transit seamlessly from the natural to the falsetto!

After listening to the clip I rate his voice as somewhere between piss weak and shithouse, just sayin

…and saying it so pleasantly buddy. His vocals are not my taste either and in my none too humble opinion, not a patch on Russell Thompkins Jr. from The Stylistics, on whose vocal performances Jimmy may have styled himself.
Did a couple of gigs with The Stylistics back in the day, at the opening of a place called the Centrefold Disco. Where the Tivoli was on George Street. They were fabulous guys and great singers.
The nude adagio act performing in the fountain wasn’t too shabby either.
I wonder where Rob Hook and Jim are these days.

They’re a pretty cool couple of songwriters. I tried to make this list “accessible” but there’s plenty more R&B, disco, soul ballads, the works. The selection on YouTube isn’t as good as I’d have liked, but that’s so often the case.
