Continuing on with last weeks theme I’ve found some more tunes which spent time in the top 100 in their respective years. The television programs were seen as confronting at the time. “Are you being serve” was a master of the double entendre though no pussy jokes in this one. The advertisement here is not meant to be political statement. I can’t recall any election advert in the past 40 odd years but I remember this one.

Just watched this–the 2010 concert. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Voltage_Festival
Found it when I was channel surfing on Austar. I know T2 would love it, since there are a lot of English bands on it.
Judging from Algy’s comments, about buying The NME, (which surprised me actually), I would imagine it would;d be of interest too.
Sorry that I couldn’t watch it woith you.
Parts of it were funny; the older, balder versions of the rockers, jigging about on stage,— hoever all in all it was terrific.
maybe they’ll screen this years, next year?

I have quite a few of these. T Rex was one of our ‘wedding’ presents. I’ve had it put to a CD and the first time I played it in my car Daughter No.2 looked at me oddly and I said, yes, it is different and it is good. It also gets a bit weird, but I like it.

Most of what I’ve found would have been mainstream at the time. I’m looking at what was popular, with a few favourites of course. Dark side of the moon was a Christmas present. Listening after lunch Father was listening and following the words in the album cover. Of course it came to Money and the word “bullshit”. Surprised. Father calls out Mum, Mother did you have a look the works here before you bought this! Never worried him after that apparently.

Saw T Rex live at Newcastle City Hall (in the UK) I think in 1970 or ’71… “Metal Guru” was at no 1 in the British charts at the time…
Spend many afternoons and evenings listening to Dark Side of the Moon, Algae… Wonder what your Dad’s objection was to ‘Money’!

Oh he didn’t object to any of it other than it contained the word “bullshit”. he never mentioned it again. Dark side of the moon was one of my fav’s as well and I did much the same.

Yes Don MClean has a great voice. Probably the best one of this selection. marvin gaye of course, but a different timbre.
Marc Bolan used to drop into my shop, with his child in a push-chair. David Bowie lived opposite, in Holmead Rd (it led through to Fulham RD opposite Chelsea footbal ground. Bowie and Marc were friends.
Marc Bolan got killed driving from King’s Rd (not my shop), out through Wandsworth Common, just by the bridge. I think his girlfriend was driving. People still leave flowers there to this day.

And while Hawkwind’s album was burning up the album charts, this was in the singles charts… It’s interesting in terms of musical history, as it’s Hawkwind’s one and only ‘big hit single’… “Silver Machine”:
For me, if there was one band that epitomises the spirit of the seventies, it would have to be Hawkwind! Michael Moorcock, who used to live not far from Matilda’s, wrote a book in which the band saves the world with their music, entitled, “Time of the Hawklords”… Fabulous stuff.

I was having a conversation with some of the guys over on the ‘Blues Guitar Unleashed’ blog about Lemmy… Hawkwind’s bassist before he formed his own band, Motorhead… Unless I’m much mistaken, by coincidence, Hawkwind’s album, “In Search of Space” also belongs to 1972… So here’s a track from it, entitled, “Master of the Universe”… Dig the bass and drums!
Brings back all kinds of memories for me…

A quick google show it was released in 1971, however that could have been 1972 here. Wiki suggests that Hawkwind were a link between hippie or psychedelic and punk? I used to subscribe to NME in the ’70’s and it was always about three weeks od when it arrived. So all this fits.

Well… I was close… anyway, at least the single ‘Silver Machine’ WAS released in ’72…
Dunno about whether or not punks got into Hawkwind, but I know plenty of ‘hippies’ did.

May I humbly add this one. For the Friday-night meat raffle.
On the subject of the extremely long construction period, Gaudí is said to have remarked, “My client is not in a hurry.”[15] When Gaudí died in 1926, the basilica was between 15 and 25 per cent complete.[9][16] After Gaudí’s death, work continued under the direction of Domènec Sugrañes i Gras until interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Parts of the unfinished basilica and Gaudí’s models and workshop were destroyed during the war by Catalan anarchists. The present design is based on reconstructed versions of the lost plans as well as on modern adaptations. Since 1940 the architects Francesc Quintana, Isidre Puig Boada, Lluís Bonet i Gari and Francesc Cardoner have carried on the work. The illumination was designed by Carles Buigas. The current director and son of Lluís Bonet, Jordi Bonet i Armengol, has been introducing computers into the design and construction process since the 1980s. Mark Burry of New Zealand serves as Executive Architect and Researcher. Sculptures by J. Busquets, Etsuro Sotoo and the controversial Josep Subirachs decorate the fantastical façades.
The central nave vaulting was completed in 2000 and the main tasks since then have been the construction of the transept vaults and apse. As of 2006, work concentrated on the crossing and supporting structure for the main tower of Jesus Christ as well as the southern enclosure of the central nave, which will become the Glory façade.

I have visited twice, in the last 8 years. It isn’t finished, however, is still worth a visit.
I spent New Year’s Eve in Barcelona 8 years ago. In a Chinese Restaurant actually. The Spanish ring in the New Year by eating 12 grapes. they are served in a glass and put in front of one; so there’s no escape. Each time the bell rings, one has to swallow one. I got a bit behind; it’s harder than one thinks. Even cramming, I still had 3 left. I put them in my pocket.
God must have known though, cos I’ve never won lotto 🙂

Oh, I shjould explain. One can make a wish on successful consumption of ‘all’ the grapes.

Thanks Algy, brilliant selection, oh “Tapestry” sitting on the stone doorstep, a neighbourhood party, pretending taking long draws on a joint before hastily passing it around. The police turning up as a result of a sour puss neighbour. One very confident woman friend trying to unzip the young copper. It all comes back including the headache in the morning.
American Pie is one of my favourites. Another one is ‘Winter in America is Cold’. We had a party at our house and afterwards found out that the LP of Don McClean had disappeared. I remember it well because ‘Winter in America’ ( Doug Ashdown)was riding high and Jimmy Stewart who wrote the music was part of the Inner West scene at the time and in our vegie co-op group and part of that night’s party.
Anyway,
It was gone and we never replaced it. All our LP’s were chucked replaced with CD’s but now we mainly listen to classical music, especially when driving. Sometimes I switch over to other music but when the ads come on, I flick it. Triple JJJ is better but all that incessant mirth and laughter with ‘stuff like that’ talk and phony whoopee, drives me around the bend as well. Gee, what happened to the soothing sounds of the radio or TV of yesteryear? Where is the youthfulness of modern youth, their idealism, their goals, there insight? It’s all celebrity and twirling around aimlessly like demented dervishes or like Kyle Sandilands sucking dogballs..
I am so glad I still feel the exhuberance of my years and still rock.

Algy junior listens to classical music. Whenever I hop in Mrs A’s car after his been driving it its on ABCFM. That and Jazz a love he shares with the youngest Algernonina who has recently discovered JJJ. I suppose they all have interesting tastes in music and not that much of it mainstream.
When researching for this week and last I noticed those singles that charted differed a little from those overseas at the time. 2JJ changed that in the following years. I glad you liked this offering.

Algernon, another good selection,I love Don McLean, Paul Simon and of course I liked the Garfunkel as well, a good ‘couple’…The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Carly Simon……
We used to watch ‘Are you being served’, but perhaps The Number 96 was showing on commercial channel…I know about it but never watched it….
At the time of 1972 election we were living in Holland , so I have to check that one out…
Well done, alge…I’ll listen to them all during the weekend .
PS I’m missing Carole King…did she come a bit later on…?

I chose Number 96 as it was considered “risque” in 1972. Almost forbidden fruit at our place. On the rare occasion I watched it, mum and dad out somewhere, I wondered what all the fuss was about. Carole King was of the period. I could have included her last week given Tapestry was a 1971 album. This one doesn’t seem that out of place here.
