Recently the Rolling Stones celebrated 50 years together as a group. The Beach Boys first formed in 1961 and released their first album in 1962. Their most prolific period was the 1960’s. Pet sounds was arguably one of their best and significant albums.
Here is a selection of their music, and in particular Pet Sounds. For Chicago and Elton John – look out for the backing vocals

Another good one down memory lane. We went to a gallery today called the Milk Factory where Greg Hyde has an exhibition of his work. I used to exhibit at Trinity Grammar College many years ago where he also used to show his work. Many decades later and we met again. He now lives on a farm near Bathurst and continues to paint his Icon type paintings. (He is from Russian background).
Anyway, if you get to Bowral go and have a look at his work and also at amazing photography by Richard Morecroft of the ABC and SBS fame.
What is it about music that just a few notes and it gives you a trip to a period of many years ago and even brings up the geography and place of where you were when that music embedded itself into your brain?
Thanks Algy

Thought you might enjoy it after last weeks comments. I took Algernonina the Elder to Macquarie University for their open day where she hopes to study next year. She could walk there from home but probably won’t. Hasn’t had much of an idea all year though she’s come back to what she was thinking at the beginning of the year. Had a tour through what was the sound & television school she was rapt. We’re hoping that the younger will be offered a summer scholarship at the National Art School during the summer break. Her school offers two places. Next year we’ll be starting to look at the Art all the art schools for her though we think we know which school she’s thinking of. It’s a choice of two.
I haven’t been to Bowral for a while, but I just had a look at his website, I’m sure it would interest the younger. The Beach Boys were a favourite of mine when I was a kid and yes I can recall times and places I was when I heard them.

I like the music, I like the pictures; the girls so slim and well groomed, the boys with neat hair cuts and ties…

Hi Algy. Definitely the soundtrack of my youth. Thanks for this playlist. My first 45 record was by the Sunrays (managed by Brian Wilson’s Dad after the Beach Boys dumped this apparently abusive father) as their manager. It was called “I live for the Sun” and has been featured here before.
FM and I went to the New Brian Wilson Beach Boys concert in the Festival of Sydney a few years ago at the State Theatre. Brian was only just hanging in there, but the young band played true to the original and they ripped !
The recent tour by the splitter minor Beach Boys reform band was panned – as was Brian’s recent tour. I think it Was the Herald critic – normally even-handed in my view who basically said “They were great once- revolutionary in Pet Sounds”, but the years have told on Brian and the gig’s up now.

They are one of the band I can recall liking from my childhood. For many years I though that I live for the sun was a Beach boys tune.
I saw the recently interviewed, Brian Wilson was there but not really, clear the drugs had taken their toll on him.
I think the ’60’s was their best period and Pet Sounds is probably one of the 10 best albums ever released by anyone.
