Western Victoria council pushes idea of purpose-built prison for elderly at Ararat

A council in western Victoria is pushing to become the site of Australia’s first purpose-built jail for the elderly.
The Ararat Council says the prison would cater for inmates over 65 and could bring 200 jobs to the town.
The idea has been canvassed with the State Government, but a spokesman says a decision is a long way off.
Ararat Council chief executive Andrew Evans says prisons are not equipped to deal with elderly inmates.
“What better than a facility that is right next door to a large regional hospital?” he said.
“You don’t have to put the same level of security on it. You’re talking about people who are chronically ill and chronically aged.
“It can be designed for wheelchairs. You can have roll-in showers. You can have all the things that need to be there.”
Will they have black pudding on the menu?

OMG! You mean that after the oldies have worn out their welcome in their concentration camps-sorry folks, their old-soak’s homes-they are going to be sent to a prison in Ararat? You don’t think that’s carrying the disposal of the elderly a little too far. Hehehehehe

Remember that wonderful English programme that highlighted the ills of the welfare systrem in the UK and the single father who was forever doing things to get himself attention specifically because he had a tribe of children. I remember him marching across a green sward followed by children like a line of ducks and walking straight into the water through a crowd. Another time he stood in from of his favourite shop front window and threw a brick into it, smashing it and setting off the alarm.
It might require us to get our formidable skills into a planning office (we might hire rooms) but we could set up a kind of reverse scheme to the usual one getting wronged and badly done by prisoner’s out. It might be lucrative. Baby Boomers catered for. We could coin a catch phrase – code – like ‘Justice is Booming’ and maybe call it ‘Get in the Nick’ or ‘Eureka’.

Even better news is that we have an excellent person standing as an Independent against Sophie Mirabella in Indi. I’m helping Cathy McGowan – have known here (on and off) for about 30 years. She has an excellent community support group/network behind her. See Voice for Indi.

vivienne29 – very best of luck. I try not to let election personalities influence me – always insisting that it is policies that are the most important – but that Mirabella woman ………….. (shakes her head).

I agree with Y. And big print books !
Except that it’ll be a bit risky getting the zimmer frames onto the roof during protests – and we already know that fires and geriatrics don’t go together all that well.
Probably cheap to operate – instead of security, just a sign at the gate saying “No scooters past this point” and a sign saying “escape route” that just runs around the prison yard and comes back in – that’ll take care of daily exercise.
