That’s over $84,000 in work-related travel entitlements Abbott claimed while “volunteering”, running, swimming, cycling and attending major sporting events.
All in a day’s work?
Travel allowance is payed to Opposition Office Holders for the cost of accommodation, meals, and incidentals during overnight stays away from home when the stay is primarily due to official business such as sittings of Parliament, parliamentary committee meetings, official business as Opposition Office Holder, or parliamentary political party meetings.
The pattern and consistency of these travel claims provides the most compelling case against Abbott. Abbott’s work related travel is regularly associated with attending major spectator events or participating in sports events. More than just a coincidence? It seems likely the primary purpose for his travel is to attend these volunteer, charity, sporting or major spectator events. And if his travel is not primarily for official business it is not a legitimate work related expense.
International comparison
This list of Abbott’s dubious travel expense claims is astounding. Truly of international standard. So for an international comparison consider the Parliamentary Expenses scandal in the UK which arose when MPs and members of House of Lords were found to have systematically rorted their claims for travel and accommodation expenses. Many MPs were found to have made claims for expenses which were not “wholly, exclusively and necessarily incurred for the performance of a Member’s parliamentary duties”. Several MPs were charged and convicted, and many more stood down or resigned. For example:
• Elliot Morley was sentenced to 10 months jail for dishonestly claiming over ₤30,000 (around $50000) in parliamentary expenses
• John Taylor, Baron of Warwick was sentenced to 12 months jail for falsely claiming ₤11277 (around $20000) parliamentary expenses for travel costs
• Jim Devine was sentenced to 16 months jail for dishonestly claiming ₤8385 (around $15200) in expenses
• Baron Hanningfield was sentenced to 9 months jail for incorrectly claiming ₤14000 (around $25000) in travel allowances.
Consider Abbott’s $84000+ of claims in this context.

And in Australia Peter Slipper faces court over alleged inappropriate claims of taxi expenses of less than $1000.
This list shows Tony Abbott has claimed over $84,000 in dubious travel expenses for his travel while volunteering, running, riding swimming and attending major sports events. But not a word is spoken.

You would have had to grow up with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (derek & Clive) TWTWTW, two Ronnies, Tommy Cooper, Chic Murray, to understand my posts… I don’t mean watch them on TV – as I am sure that some Australians did. But to be part of that culture which moulds ones thought processes. ect to appreciate. I’ve seen old Aussie comedy shows, from that era. the thinking is the antitheses, of mine.

The flight information was not flippant – a total waste of page space. The witch hunt was/is what happened to Slipper. Never have you stuck to my point which was all about volunteering and claiming of expenses. The fact that all this rorting of expenses is now well and truly out in the open is good. It is not so much that both Lib/Nats and Labor have claimed things which they never should (apparently it is all ‘inadvertant’ or a mistake) – it is the hypocrisy of the Liberals who constantly yabber on about waste.

Politics is much easier to stomach if you don’t take it too seriously. If however, political seriousness is your schtick, then Stemetil and Lomotil might also help.
During the election I promised myself I wouldn’t engage and I was reasonably successful in keeping that promise. Saved a lot of that tisking and head shaking with eye rolling that my family have exhibited during previous campaigns.
I expect nothing good from the current government. Their manifest incompetence is on show for all that would see it. We are left with nothing but hope that they might eventually work it out and govern for all Australians, not just their sociopathic financial supporters. That the other lot have shown themselves to be just as unable to successfully deliver good policy is the great sadness for Australia. These and our purblind myopia when trying to find the good in the other sides position mean that we’re stymied by our blind allegiance to political postures that are as outdated as they are lacking in utility.
And the petty tribal bickering and name calling that goes on here is nothing more than a manifestation of the broader community’s difficulty at this time to trust in one another and believe in a future where we might all share in the common good.
Seriously folks; aren’t we better than this. Aren’t there real issues to discuss, to share our thoughts on, aspirations we might all share? Isn’t it obvious to all of us that politics is part of the problem not the solution, and that investing our faith and hope in people who have shown again and again that they are incapable of lying straight in bed is a loser’s game.
If we can’t find common ground we’re in deeper trouble than we realise.

Do you mean post WWII? 21st century? Because petty tribal political bickering has been there for anyone who wants to join in for as long as I can remember, anyway. As far as I can see it’s nothing more or less than a manifestation of people’s desire for tribal bickering. To my mind supporting a football team is a better venue for blindly supporting a side, and religion is a better venue for religious fervour.

“at this time” means “at this time”. While I accept that poor interpersonal behaviour has always been a characteristic of the politics of Oz, I put it to you that we are suffering more than usual “at this time”.
We have just elected a government that has at its head a man supremely unfit to govern. He has shown himself to be a breaker rather than a consensus builder. His singular lack of understanding and his obdurate denial of climate change alone should have disqualified him; but no, we seem to enjoy his surf club stupidity, indeed many of us “at this time” agree with him that it’s OK to be casually cruel to those seeking haven and a new life here, that it’s OK for kleptocratic mining barons to so corrupt and distort the public discourse of our nation to ensure their continued undeserved wealth, while schools, hospitals and other infrastructure go begging, that it’s OK for political parties to be so focused on their own internal politics, their delusional ideologies, that good government comes a very distant second.
This is the kind of confusion that was common after the financial crisis of 1907 in America, which while not directly leading to WW1 was a contributing factor , as was the crash of 1929 in WW2.
This time we have a strained international credit system and a looming climate crisis and if you look at the international community who will lead us out of this? Merkel, Cameron, Hollande, maybe Obama? He can’t even get the Tea Party to see reason let alone see the problem “at this time”.
Perhaps it’s just as well that The Vasco Da Gama Age is coming to an end. The Chinese and the Indians couldn’t do a worse job could they?

he said that it was standard practice for politicians to attend spots events. The last there MPs did. In fact they are all there given the opportunity. They like to be seen by the public. And apparently they get reimbursed for that form public funds. I admit to not checking that, however it does seem likely.
“Well”, he said, “why not compensate them when they actually participate?”
Of course the clear and indisputable logic is as sharp as an Arctic breeze; an unambiguous and devastating, check mate!

Carisbrooke, please enlighten me. What the fuck has the Dreamliner got to do with anything? Further; who cares where you might put Abbott in relation to Hitler in some poxy media list of leaders? They’re apples and oranges. Hitler was an obvious psychopath, while Abbott is merely a sociopath. No contest. And the entitlements rorting that goes on with both sides shows that this is a characteristic of politicians as a class rather than any particular party. They both fail the “Clapham Omnibus” test comprehensively, but so long as they have uncritical, unthinking adherents like your self and others here, they’ll get away with it. You could say that it’s your own lack of commitment to robust rational political debate that condemns you and your opposition to the half light of slur and innuendo, half truths and the media narrative.
You know I can’t help but feel that you might get a more rational response to your various contributions here if you actually framed you points rationally. So far as I can make out the political bickering that goes on here is mostly pots and kettles, with both sides scrambling to defend the indefensible actions of their particular political tribe. We need to grow up, get beyond this schoolyard nonsense. You might as well put your little fists on your little hips and spit “My Daddy’s a policeman and my Mummy’s got a Hundred Pounds in the bank!” It’s about as logical and about as convincing and fits the developmental level displayed here by both sides.

Presenting information out of context and in isolation of a special kind tends to make it a lie. The meeting in Canberra is no different to the Lib/Nats meeting in Canberra along with the one to get sworn in at Government House. Except that cost more because there are more of them ! Taxpayers didn’t just ‘fork’ out for a Labor meeting, they forked out for the Liberal and the Nationals for the same thing.

Hardly – confirms what I say – it is self-assessment and it is an honour system. The ‘rules are unclear’ comes about because there are many wrongful claims. The phrase should be ‘the rules are unclear to some thickhead MPs’ – and that includes from all parties Jules.

I think that we could recognise that as a general principle : Presenting information out of context in order to deceive someone is the moral equivalent of a lie. Unless of course it’s done for some other reasonably obvious objective, such as a refutation of the same tactics or a teaching moment in recognising them.

Taxpayers slugged $200,000 to fly MPs to Canberra for ALP leadership meetings
TAXPAYERS will fork out up to $200,000 to fly Labor MPs to Canberra so they can vote for a new parliamentary leader.
As the Opposition ramps up its attack on Tony Abbott over entitlements, News Corp can reveal the public will pay a high price for the ALP’s bold leadership experiment.
And several Labor MPs have expressed disgust at the expense of flying around 80 Caucus members to the national capital – for two separate meetings within the space of a few days.
With some business class airfares costing around $5,000, Labor MPs will firstly fly to Canberra on Thursday where they will vote in a leadership ballot for Anthony Albanese or Bill Shorten.
They will then return to parliament on Sunday where the winner will be announced. Labor’s new frontbench will then be elected by the Caucus on Monday.
ALP national secretary George Wright confirmed the Labor Party will not be footing the bill to fly MPs back to Canberra for the first time since the September 7 election.
Instead the public will pay for flights, Comcar and other expenses. Opposition MPs will also be entitled to claim $268 in travel allowance if they stay overnight, adding to the cost of Labor’s leadership experiment.
Labor MP Graham Perrett confirmed he will complete the return trip from Brisbane on Thursday – and then return to the ACT on Sunday. He is suggesting a review of the voting process including the possible use of electronic voting for MPs to minimise the burden.
“I would hope every member of the Labor Party would be minimising the costs of democracy,” he told News Corp.
“But democracy is not cheap. It’s an official parliamentary meeting. This is the first time such things have happened and we’ll be looking at the process.”
A spokesman for acting Labor leader Chris Bowen said it was “not without precedent that following an election and ahead of the first parliamentary sitting, Opposition parties meet to elect a new leadership team”.
Labor MPs flying from West Australia will cost around $5,000, including just over $4,000 for the price of a business class airfare. The cost is much cheaper – around $1,810 per person – for 23 NSW MPs while the expense of transporting 24 Victorians – including Mr Shorten – is just over $2,000 each.
It is expected that some Labor MPs will stay overnight in Canberra between Thursday and Sunday – minimising the public expense.
One Labor MP said the public had a right to feel “disgusted” at the costs of the leadership ballot.
Mr Perrett said he expected the party would examine the introduction of electronic voting.
“In this age of the internet, we may be able to work out some processes in cutting out travel to Canberra for these things,” he said.

That was another waste of space full of lies. The Labor party leadership matter is being paid for by the Labor party, not the taxpayer. The one meeting of caucus of the MPs will be charged to the govt just the same as all meetings at parliament are paid for by the govt as when the Lib/Nats all gathered there very recently for their meeting.

Calling Peter Slipper Slippery is immature. I think he’s copped enough bullying from the bad boy network. Don’t Old Boys eventually grow up to be good moral citizens- and to acknowledge vengeance driven sadistic games or revenge consciousness, power shows and brutal hyper macho unethical conduct? After all they are public servants not out of control dictators -They need to choose common decency, morality.
Peter Slipper and family deserve full compensation and apology from Abbott PM. No ambiguity here.

He should be in jail. Why should I work my arse off, so that he can go for a jaunt; getting pissed at my expense. No doubt the poor taxpayer paid for his booze too.

Seems that Brandis and Joyce did much the same at that Indian wedding. Would have been cheaper if they did do a winery cruise around Canberra. I think if Pete bought any wine he actually paid for it out of his own money – nothing booked up to the taxpayer listed as ‘bottles of wine’ that I could find.

Carisbrooke’s pathetic attempt to deflect attention from Abbott’s rorting serves no purpose. His inability to see a problem is staggering. Abbott & Co have one standard while in Opposition and a completely different one when in Government. They persecuted Pete Slipper for doing what now amounts to a miniscule taxi fare rort when at the same time some of them were ripping the taxpayer off on a very grand scale. All charges must be withdrawn in the Slipper case and he must be allowed to repay the money in the same way Abbott & Co have. There should be a very big public apology. No doubt the rule book will be rewritten in words which no one can possibly ‘misinterpret’. And maybe, just maybe, the Liberals and their soul-mates will start behaving like adults.

I couldn’t care what expenses he gets. He’s now one of thr most powerful figures in the southern hemisphere – something I never felt about Keating, Howard, Rudd, or Gillard Did you read the article I tabled about the civil servants?
Abooot, a man so intellectually superior to Rudd and Gillard, may turn out to be lazy Australia’s saviour.

I always wanted The ALP to be successful at their job, however they dashed my hopes.

Yes, of course. Not as much as China’s of course.
Tell me about Pakistan – only recently a democracy?
Indai helped after the 2nd world war, and certainly has financial muscle, and 1.4 billion consumers, but is not influential, on the world stage. They want to buy our uranium, which The ALP(Fergasun & Howes)wanted to sell to them of course – as I mentioned to Vivienne. It went over her head of course.
Julie bishop has already made her mark, looking assured and competent.
I have high hopes, however am open to listening to any criticisms; not nit pickng about $400 expenses though. That’s the stuff of nitpicking. Scrapping the barrel.
However when you don’t really have anything, I can understand your frustration.
What did you think of Kevin’s naval bases move and his bullet train? I think that he reads The Drum, since I have mentioned it about 10 times.
