These are covers of the songs in Burt Bacharach – The Originals. They are necessarily the best or the most famous of the covers. This list was prepared to show the different musical genres that picked up on Burt Bacharach’s music.
Please Stay – Mekon
Another Tear Falls – The Walker Brothers
24 hours from Tulsa – Dusty Springfield
Walk on By – The Stranglers
There’s always something there to remind me – Sandie Shaw
I just don’t know what to do with myself – The White Stripes
Trains and boats and planes – Billy J Kramer and The Dakota’s
My little red book – Love
What’s new pussycat – The Wailers
Alfie – Alison Moyet
The look of love – Diana Krall
This Guys in love with you – The Reels
What the world needs now – Dionne Warwick & the Hip Hop Nation Unlimited
Say a little prayer – Aretha Franklin
I’ll never fall in love again – Bobbie Gentry
Do you know the way to San Jose – Frankie goes to Hollywood
Toledo – Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach

Some great hits in that list. It’s interesting. The ones that covered his songs, quite a variety.

Isn’t it. Don’t think there was too much that he wrote that wasn’t good. Often the covers are better than the original.

A correction to my text.
They “aren’t” necessarily the best or the most famous of the covers.

What a great set of covers, Algy. BB’s songs are so well embellished by so many artists. My surprising favourites include the Reels (First Mate and I say them live a few years ago at the Factory in Marrickville. They were great !). Did anyone recognise the clip was filmed in the Sandringham Gardens in Hyde Park, Sydney ?
I love Elvis Costello’s Toledo … the Ohio town’s borrowing of the Spanish citadel’s name certainly hasn’t travelled very well 🙂
An all-time fave – the Stranglers – and what an album cover – right up there with your best bizzarros.

I’d argue one of the most important singer songwriters of the past 50-60 years.
Elvis Costello collaborated on an album in the 90’s, simply brilliant. Toledo wasn’t really a cover but a wonderful end to the list. Mrs A and I will see him at the Opera House (Elvis Costello that is) on 10/4.
Yes my favourite version of Walk On By, along with the Bass solo, pretty hard to beat the Dionne Warwick version. The Stranglers album covers were always a bit odd, that one as you sat.
I’d forgotten The Reels video setting.
