The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Jet Black was the drummer. He hasn’t toured with the band since 2015 due to ill health. He was 84. Their keyboardist Dave Greenfield died of COVID in 2020.

Unreal Ace. Took me 5 months to save the money and the new one just blows me away. Saved up $1k and got it for $700. My old one died about 3 to 4 weeks ago. Luckily I had everything backed up to a stand-alone hard drive. When it started having problems I thought get a backup done. I really glad as the old laptop no longer works. BTW, surfing the net on the phone is frigging terrible.. Haven’t done so much reading in ages. 🙂

Isn’t just. When I had mine fixed earlier this year, all I had was my phone for five weeks. You can do most things but surfing the net is a pain. Mrs A will replace hers in the new year. Had hers fixed but other issues have now taken over. She can still use it but she has to plug it into a screen.

BTW, next pay, i.e. next Tuesday, I will have saved $1k for a new laptop. My current one has become so bogged down and can take 30 minutes to even start on some days. I have carried out most of the recommendations found on the net to help it along but to little gain. Got my current one on sale in 2015 so I reckon that’s not too bad. When I get my new one a mate of mine is going to convert it from Windows 11 to Linux. No more anti-virus and free software. This will suit my budget better.

That’s not bad really out of a laptop. I had a desktop that went nine years before it gave me the blue screen. Bought a shmick laptop workstation thinking I’d need it for part time work, that never eventuated. Nowadays its an overpriced word processor and searcher of ancestors. It’s got a few years left, oh and it has a new motherboard after it wouldn’t turn on with six weeks of warranty left on it.
Mrs A will be replacing hers at Christmas, it works but has to be plugged into a screen. Only four years old.

Thanks Ace. Daisy is usually spot on with her comments and I agree with her that the repetition of the funeral is boring. But commentators often repeat themselves on TGA about numerous subjects. Stage 3 tax cuts are a good example.

Well TGA is an English rag with an Australian edition. The problem I have with the Australian sport articles is the AFL onanists who feel the need to broadcast their fake facts about their small in world terms, provincial sport. They can’t get though their thick brains that the sport is one competition with 18 teams and played nowhere else apart from Nauru. Whereas other sports in Australia are played in multiple countries with multiple completions.

Well yes TGA is English but they could keep the soccer stories on the UK page. Anyone in Oz that follows the EPL can click on the UK tab and read away. AFL is a provincial game as you say and will never be likely to be played around the world simply due to the size of the ground needed. There are AFL competitions in every state and amateur leagues in many countries, the US and Japan just to name a few. Just because you don’t like AFL doesn’t mean that someone who does is an onanist. I think that’s a bit harsh. The NRL has the same type of followers as the AFL. AFL is the most popular sport in Oz and has the most spectators and participants. Yes NRL is played throughout the world but only a small handful of countries take it seriously. The world game is soccer, and for me, I have very little to no interest in it.

What I object to is their supporters trying to swamp non AFL threads with what is wrong with the sport being discussed in the thread and talk exclusively about the AFL, its deliberate trolling. The most popular sports in this country by participation are Soccer and Netball not the AFL as they would have you believe. As for competitions overseas well they are mostly a few hundred played by expats.

That’s fine if you’re talking about spectators. I’m talking about participants. As I say the most popular team sports by participation in the whole of Australia are Soccer and Netball, which the link back up. I’d even question the AFL participation numbers in NSW and Queensland. All my kids were considered participants of the AFL for attending a sports expo with their school where many sports were involved. They were probably with the AFL part for an hour and never had anything to do with the sport since, yet they were included in their numbers of participants who played across the country. Thousands of kids attended that day. I also recall the AFL wanting to use Birchgrove Oval exclusively for AFL claiming they had about 4500 players in the area. When they asked to provide evidence of that to the council it was more like 160. Even GWS who barely play in Western Sydney overstate their home ground crowds by about 10000. Its fairly obvious when they quote a crowd of 12000 which is half full only for nobody to be in the top of the stand and the out being 10% full that a crowd would more likely be 1500 to 4000.

Yeah. Re-reading it, it doesn’t make sense. Sorry mate. Here on the coast, we get TV sport but nothing else. I am thinking of taking weekend trips to Canberra to see the Raiders or GWS play. Maybe get the bus, stay overnight and come home the next day. Costly but that’s about the best I can do.
