The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

  1. It’s annoying when one gets a quality post; such as Azrael’s NBN promotion, that one cannot reply to.

That’s when the new regime is thoroughly and abysmally frustrating…FULL STOP !!

Next time I go to ‘Good Guys’ for a computer I’ll make sure it has access to soapbox technology.and able to open links in my inbox.
Inbox and soapbox are probably both boxes embedded in the software that was supposed to have been included in my computer. Anyway, I am lucky that I can see soapbox and inbox on Helvi’s compute.r

The young ones canoed and swam and it was delightful. We moved on and went back to the river where it was quiet and nothing noiser than wild ducks. Caught nothing but still enjoyed ourselves immensley. Think the fish took off east.

Well done Algernon! Anyone giving that Cheerful redneck a kick up the bum is alright by me.
I see most of the Pigs Arms up today – Stuffed, Gerard, Helvi, atomou, Funston.
Good to see. Good to see.
To Stuffed – I agree with your assessment. They ARE killing it.
To atomou – Ellis, for all his failings, is still our Master of the Pen . I have yet to read a line from anyone else that comes close to his sentence/idea construction.

I’m off to try, for the 4th time, a response to that buffoon who crossed me on Ben Pojbie’s article. Is it just me? I found it…very UNfunny.
      Anyone?

I best be off…I can hear the children laughing and arguing…..that or the early sounds of a melee….
Oh, just one last thing Stuffed – I sought to resume my long standing argument with Mitor over religion in donnelly’s article a few days ago. I sought to address some of his/her nonsense…..I posted 5 or 6 specific to Mitor’s posts and about 3 or 4 general ones.
      Not one made it up.

The post and sentiment is what is important, not the alias. That’s why I change it. I suppose some writers attach a sort of sanctimonious piousness to their messages (like Mulga): pomposity, actually.

Iv’e made this point before. I maintain my message, day-in-day-out. Be clear and think of the future. Don’t concern oneself with silly parochial baggage: that’s for the committees and the no-effecters; just tinkering with silly rules and regulations.

      • Good morning all.
Helvi – I certainly was not “Bloke in Beijing”! That cheeky sod was trying to take the piss….and only the most inoffensive of my responses made it through.

Atomou – I agree with you about the posts….I do however have a particular interest in the history and biography of the posters. It helps me both situate and discriminate. I would also like to know a little more about some of them, an impossible wish I know, but I am curious as to the life of say, Mulga, Reader1, R. Ambrose Raven, Tomokatu, Doug Quixote, and several others.
I wonder as to their stories……as I wonder about the stories of those right here. Clues
drop every now and again….a snapshot here, an admission there…..and a rudimentary outline forms. Perhaps we should write a paragraph on our lives and introduce
        ourselves to eachother 🙂

Funston – thank you for the fonts. None however had either the 50’s Modernist verve of
your “F” or the bold elemental feel of Helvi’s “H”. Could you please put a little more effort into your selection?
And you are quite correct – the differences are “fundamental”. I am your junior by some 20 years……a lifetime some would say…..but not I. The difference is only one of
memory. You have more to remember….and spend most of your time remembering,
whilst i am smack in the middle of my prime; muscular years, robust, curious, pugnacious and sharp……complimented in equal measure by both sensitivity and grace…..;)
        It is a wonderful pastiche.
        I’m sure you remember it……lovingly. 😉

Put the article up and let in some comment but basically shut it down in less than a day in order to prevent posters from arguing the point. But why leave the closed article there for so long? If you come to it late in the day you can’t comment. The value of some of the articles does not warrant leaving them up there, closed and lifeless. If this is what they are really doing then they are killing the whole thing off at the same time. What is the point

Often gives me the shits and there’s no question about it, he has become quite the misogynist. I took this up with him a few months ago and the more he protested, the more it had become obvious. I let him flagellate himself to his heart’s content.
Mungo is still quite readable and I doubt he’ll ever become a misogynist, like Ellis.

Well done Helvi. I try to mix it up a bit as Hung gets into trouble from the moderators for being a homophobic foul mouthed bigot, I mean could imagine Hung ever upsetting someone 🙂 Some other names I use are Jenny Taylor and Oopy Brown but what I find most amazing is how Gordon O’Donnell gets the most airplay out of all of them. On Alan Kohlers recent hysterical rant about the Fair Work Act all of my psuedos were rejected except for Gordon.

Jenny gets a good run on women’s issues but one of the most interesting attacks Jenny had to suffer was on one of the same sex marriage articles. Jenny said that in her workplace same sex marriage was pretty unimportant, well TechinBris took great umbrage at Jenny and aggressively pursued her even attacking another poster called Jenny in the same manner. It was a very interesting experiment. I only use Hung sparingly but I love to have a debate with Rob1966, he is gay, intelligent, right wing and passionate everything I’m not. I actually respect him even though I don’t agree with much that he says. Rob doesn’t get personal and uses strong arguments to have a debate. When the mods allow we have a good fight.

Even though I change my psuedo my style doesn’t vary. I like to use simple words, keep it as brief as possible, keep left at all times and support the underdog. Just my nature I guess. I don’t mind fessin up here about my different screen names as I don’t bait any of the piglets and in fact I wonder sometimes whether the Drum knows us all. I have tried many times to answer both you, Gez, Algernon, SO and others but rarely get posted even though one of the mods was allowing my comment “May I say I agree with you Helvi”. I have rarely been posted on one of Gez’s Drum articles no matter how many times I try.

JG is brilliant and atomou always gives another angle and Jules is a great balance for the piglets. Algernon, Stuffed Olive and Hung all come from the same parents as they all are lefties. The thing I love most about your posts is the lack of ceilings. You constantly amaze me how you set virtually no barriers to a person or their thought processes, absolutely amazing and I love you for it. I envy your children and I believe that you demonstrate a fantastic parenting technique in what you say and the way that you say it, well done girl. Crikey, look at all these words, very un Hung like. I didn’t know that he knew so many. I think it must be that Hung’s mental health is on the mend. Sorry for the hurt. I was lashing out. What they both had was a social concience, I suspect they voted both ways. Dad is certainly left leaning these days and moreso as he gets older.

My politics was shaped by things like the Vietnam war, Whitlam and his sacking. Barrie Unsworth managed my rugby team as a kid. I also knew Nick Greiner. I knew most the heirachy of the NSW Liberal party through friends, there is some pure evil there.

However I’ve always been a leftie.

Mother was a hater. She hated my father, she hated Labor, she hated anyone who did not think like her, she hated some pacifist neighbours we had who were against the Vietnam war. By the time I was 22 she hated me because I didn’t marry a wealthy businessman and live on the Sydney Harbour, because I supported Gough. She didn’t meet my husband until we had been married for 8 years. We buried the hatchet (it was always in her hands, not mine) in an attempt to all be nice and I did of course love my grandma. But she could never help herself and the hatchet came out at regular intervals and when my daughters were 17 and 14 she went totally bonkers, refused to see or speak to us, disinherited me. I found out she died in August 2004 when friends in Adelaide rang to say they had just been to her funeral and thought I should know.

Susan Ley is plain lazy but seat does stretch to the South Aust border (insane) so maybe she does some good way out west but I wouldn’t know. Mirrabella is as nasty as my mother – they would have been great friends. Mirrabella complains loudly and bitterly when Labor stuffs up with some defence uniform contract but says nothing when the Vic Libs send contracts to China for police clothing and has now ditched a policy favouring local sourcing. Not a peep.

Still looks like Algy and I have a fair bit in common (I think our histories make us stronger).

      • Helvi, I apologise for the language. In my defense I would like to say that it was an honest expression of my feelings.
        Let me continue that now:
1.What “popped up” (except for one) were the tiny tweetish rebuttals. All of the longer, more deliberate, considered and specific, arguments failed publication. All of them. This is not the first time that that has happened on her articles. I am not holding her responsible, I am simply stating the fact that no more than 2 or 3 detailed rebuttals/questions make it to publication…..and I suspect they are included to provide the fuel for the likes of herself, her blog stablemates and her supporters.
        2. J. Wilson continued her disrespectful treatment of adversarial voices. Rather than argue specific points she turns to the quip; juvenile and irrelevant. I was a recipient, as was Budovski, as were many others. I find that approach contemptuous. She also steadfastly refuses to respond to legitimate and specific questions. Her tactic is misdirection or condescension. Neither of which I can countenance.

There are more…..but i am upset and disappointed at it all.

I believe Mitor to be a chap in his late 30’s with a young family. He has not been to University and wears that regret heavily……bitterly.
But I could be wrong on all counts. Funston could in fact be right….after all, what do we know…about anybody?
I argue with him primary on the religious.
I have spent the better part of 6 months, perhaps longer, on trying to get him to locate his contradictions…..trying to get him to see beyond his hatred and fear.
I noticed atomou trying to do the same yesterday.

Anyway, I understand you and J. Wilson are friends, so I shall refrain from spilling my angst over into your space.

Perhaps some of your longer contributions are too academic for a such fast-moving format as the Drum…on Friday afternoons they pile them up for only to close them after few hours.

And, if memory serves, I was under my previous pseudonym.
      YOU were Hadron Collider?!?!?!
      God God man!
Anyone else I should know about?
      Go back about 2 years.
That reminds me – if I known you were Funston when I first walked in here I would have punched you in the nose and said “Good day to you too”!
      😉

I had nothing published at all on Young, Farnsworth or Campbell’s articles!!!
I may need to change both email and name.
It appears that ABC Mods read this site and have noticed me calling them “fucking capricious muttonheaded soft fools with no genitalia”……or something like that.
I am chatting with atomou, gerard, asty and Voice on the other page.
      Join us Brother Vectis!
      Come…..join the fray……

    • VL, I remember that party at Horton’s place, that nice bloke Hudson was there too, I miss him he was honourble and never nasty.

I hope it wasn’t our JG who finally chased him away from the Drum. I remember a six-week discussion on Wilson/MTR(? ) blog, whatever he said he was always ‘wrong’….it’s a pity..

A poster below exuded, “love your stuff David”. You’re ever whimsy, ever pleasant and ever partially fey–and I love it too.

My choice would be to have dinner with some of the worthies mentioned, with the addition of David Attenborough & A.A.Milne. The prolificness of event witnessing is not always apparent at the time── and only seems to be a life changing event in retrospect. Apart from the signing of The Magna Carta I suppose.

I would love to see a piece from you extolling your favourite moments; in turn giving us (your fans} a chance to boast. Fully pseudoed of course 🙂

Thank you very much Hadron, much appreciated.

Are you suggesting additional “moments” or more discussion about the “why” of each? I was hoping with this list that people would ask “why” about the ones they didn’t know, or about the particular aspect, or combination of people, I had chosen. Perhaps I need to do a more selective but expansive list in the future?

No, perhaps you just need to give up David. Your never-ending, self-important replies (unlike almost all other Drum Contributors) quickly wears thin.

The supreme air of confidence you insinuate in your writing, that I am of the rational age and you other poor fools who have “beliefs” are sad, mislead individuals of the un-enlightened era really makes me vomit. Leave room for thought, and respect those whose opinions differ from yours. This is the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

I know which one I humbly seek.

Hadron, can I come if I bring Astrid Lindgren and a plate of Fairybread; oh no, now Pippi Longstocking wants to come too.. 🙂

Now Beatrix Potter has heard the commotion and wants to come. So I guess that means Edith Nesbit too. But for heavens sake not too much noise or Enid Blyton will be there before we can lock the door.

“I’m not lost for I know where I am. But however, where I am may be lost.”

    A.A.Milne

I feel like that in some of these articles 🙂

Good old Joe Strummer, he got the last say about that odious jerk Slipper.

Sneaked a Greek reference in, especially for atomou 😉

    Wow,! that (below) got up.

And Ruby got my point and answered on her blog.

Gerrad, forget my question about The Neutral Carbon tax. What do you think of the situation in Syria.

I just need a giggle before I go to bed 😉

I suppose the ALP, can at least claim that Slipper is ‘our’ bas**rd now?

He can’t be there for long, he won’t have a seat much longer. However Gillard, ‘the lady who ‘is’ for turning, must see him as useful for a few months. Good riddance.

I put a couple of asterisks in, to see if it gets up.

  23. VL, this morning nothing came up before eleven or so, three of mine and two of gerard’s did not appear. I think there was some mishap again…later on the same or similar posts of ours were put up. It’s all very mysterious over there. Rather a boring day at the drum.

    This won’t get up either.

It’s great in here. I’ve got me own place.

The biggest ‘windmill tilter’ in history, presiding over farragoism and getting lauded by the left. Laughable really, excepting that they take it all seriously. Day after day, Gillard and T.W.G.T running around stamping out tinder & kindling, with buckets of froth.

Trantor, must be having an affair with one of the moderators. She writes the same myopic drivel week after week, and I can’t get one sentence up—week after week.
