The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

Couple of observations. Dugong is getting really cranky with me – following his threads and mine on the same topic – tax. His arguments get more adament that he is right and I am wrong (along with everyone else) yet he still says the same thing each time and ignores my response’s content. Seems that contrary to years of indoctrination under Howard/Costello, low interest rates, low inflation are not good indicators. Now they are indicators of everything going down the gurgler. Also note that he (and others) are usually phrases or words which I introduced to the Drum – defending the indefensible being one example. I think I have a fan or some fans though. Imitation and all that. Apparently he must be the only person who has bugger all GST on his grocery bill. Maybe he does not buy toilet paper, shampoo, biscuits or anything of that nature. He conveniently forgets that bloody GST is a Liberal tax. All the woes of the tax system only come to light under a Labor government (funny that). Don’t get me started on actual rates of income tax – those discussions are off the planet but they won’t let facts gets in the way of a good rant. Bloody heck though – was going well and then comments stopped and I never did get the last word in, Dugong did !

  4. The moderators at the Drum are intentionally delaying the messages so that they will not appear at the correct-response-time. After a gap of three hours or so they start posting up most recently made comments and work their way down to the older comments & replies. This way the posters’ and the readers’ flow of attention will be redirected to other trivial recently made comments and replies, and by that time we will all be herded away from older messages which have relevance & substance that needs to be highlighted. It’s real cluster stuff-up, done intentionally to create confusion! It takes hours to read most of the comments and we don’t have that much time.

It’s quite bizarre really… I mean, they keep on recycling the same useless types of article which stir up controversy about matters for which there is NO resolution (ie. right vs left, religion vs atheism, and everyone vs boat people… etc…) in order to claim their status as a ‘public opinion’ blog… but whenever it comes to anything REALLY controversial, they censor it and, if necessary just turn of the commentary ‘tap’…

The only reason such a blog exists in the first place is to encourage the illusion that we have ‘freedom of speech’ in this so-called de-MOCK-racy!

Others never make it as I said but the logic as to what gets up and doesn’t is just, well, absent. As I have said before, the writers of articles which go up late on a Friday only to be closed an hour or two later must be furious. They are the ones who should be complaining loud and clear to the ABC to sort this out. Reith goes up early in the week but it is he who should be banished to the late Friday gig. His weekly free anti-Labor rant is long past its use by date.

I did suggest to some poor bugger, who works nine hours a day, plus, cooks, cleans, and does all of the gardening, whilst his wife only works six hours a day, and does nothing else, because it is her feminist ‘right’ should get a divorce…didn’t get published. Oh well.

Half Past Human is the title of a science-fiction book. Being an idealistic-romantic-dreamer in my teens I used the read a lot of science-fiction books, as well as French, English and Russian (European) classics. My passion for science, history and politics has started with writers such as Jacob Bronowski, Carl Sagan, Dostoyevsky and many others. By the way you and I share the same birth year. Now you know what I am talking about.:)

Is it just a rumor that the cows went off their milk when Tony Abbott visited a dairy at Bundaberg and tried to put the suction cap on a jersey’s other udder?

Same here. Posts not getting up and stories closing so quickly. Situation is ridiculous on the Drum. I think some of the writers of the articles must be pretty pissed off. Hope they complain.

I sometimes reply to you Mark, Viv and Alge, but they don’t get up either, they must know that we are all Piglets. Yet Voice’s attacks on Gez and me are published..go figure.
I get shitty and promise never to write there, lately it has not been very tempting…

Just to sound like a cracked record I reply all you but the mods often don post them. What shits me is that toads like alf can write completely off topic comments, usually inane, and they’re are posted!

That’s a lot of shit there, Hung. Caro cited some poetry in her earlier article, in which the F word was used.
I used it in my reply, but it did not get up…I was just testing… 🙂

Thanks H and Big M, working too much at the moment, have gone backwards a bit, end of the tunnel is end of November when I can go back to my old roster can’t wait, money has been good, mental health is suffering, starting to have bad behaviours again like telling the neighbours to fuck off because their dog barks for 4 hours in a row, didn’t win lotto, the home had a gastro outbreak, got it second last shift, Tutu is great, haven’t seen her in a while due to work but we are still getting on well, didn’t win lotto a second time, picked Alcopop in the Cup, Dunaden should win on Tuesday, Port Adelaide had another miserable year, I have to barrack for St George, how bad is that, have been eating a lot of Thai salad, raw veggies with Mango, dried prawns and fish sauce, unreal, got so new glasses so now I can read, Peter Slipper is a legend, Tony Abbott is still a wanker, working hard not to hate myself, getting a bit lonely when I have time, noted that the SA opposition leader is backed by Chris Pyne meaning I will never be able to vote for her, found a new doctor, she is an Indian girl and is great, had a blood test but failed to turn up, have reduced debt and saved money, typical life of Hung One On. How about you?

Re the Drum – I guess it has always been so, but lately the people posting comments seem to be way off in gaga lala land. Writing stuff so irrelevant to the topic; replying to another comment and making no sense. And … to Meredith’s recount of the Ernie Awards showing no sense of humour or understanding or mysogny and thinking all it is about is discrimination. And, the one on raising kids etc – stupid replies to my mention of snakes ! My experience and knowledge of snake behaviour is of a very high level, including, unfortunatley, the matter of having to occasionally kill one of two of them. Well they were on the back verandah !

    • Hi Viv. Well, comment wide we’re quiet but we’ve had between 100 and 200 views ever day in the last week.

We do need some more articles, but I’ve been flat out trying to stay solvent and everyone else apparently also either reclining in a banana chair in blissful retirement – or fooling around over at the dump. I’ll whip around as usual – perhaps something might inspire you to write a piece – perhaps a new Spring recipe ?

      • I pretty well used up all my good recipes and especially those of interest. I don’t really do cakes or desserts either. I gave it a lot of thought and could not come up with anything I was happy about. However, if I have one of those light bulb moments I’ll be in touch.
