The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Washington’s lies on alleged Syrian chemical attack unravel
By Thomas Gaist
Even as the US and its allies intensify preparations for war with Syria, the lies they told to justify the looming assault are being discredited. On the same day as the British parliament’s rejection of military action against Syria, US officials admitted that there was no factual basis for their accusations that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime used chemical weapons last week in Ghouta.
Such an attack would be an unprecedented act of international gangsterism, under conditions where both the British parliament and US officials themselves are making clear that the war is being launched on the basis of lies.
Anonymous US intelligence officials reported yesterday that intelligence confirming Assad’s responsibility for the attack is “no slam dunk.” According to two intelligence officials and two other US officials who spoke to the Associated Press, US intelligence is not certain that the government ordered the chemical attack. Moreover, the same sources say that US intelligence agencies cannot confirm which side controls many chemical weapons inside the country.
In fact, it is well known that the US-backed Islamist opposition militias have acquired and repeatedly used chemical weapons.
Already on Wednesday, State Department spokesperson Maria Harf said she could not identify who inside Assad’s regime had launched the chemical attack: “I don’t know what the facts are here. I’m just, broadly speaking, saying that he is responsible for the actions of his regime. I’m not intimately familiar with the command and control structure of the Syrian military.”

Some seem to not understand that non consensual sex is rape, whether committed at 15 or 100 years. Mr Harris was NOT charged with rape. This is why I pointed out that in most European countries he would most likely not have been charged with illegal acts with a girl between 15 years or 16. It is also not illegal in Greece.
Apart from all that, I wrote firstly about not pre-judging the case before it has been dealt with.

Not interesting and certainly not relevant. Harris is charged with illegal acts. Not with questions concerning consent.
Age of consent means nothing, at least in Greece. In closely knitted and highly moralistic societies, there are always a whole lot of safeguards to prevent exploitation by powerful sleazebags. The illegal act IS sex with a 16 year old or younger even if it is consensual. That is the law in the UK and yet in Greece and most other countries, no worries… Most 15 or 16 years would have seen more pricks than pin cushions. I doubt they would look at you though (or me)

Isn’t Rudd gorgeous. He’s The Libs best weapon.
LABOR has suffered a mortal blow to its claim of a $10 billion “black hole” in Tony Abbott’s election platform as the nation’s top public officials disowned the figures used to escalate the government’s scare campaign over Coalition spending cuts.
In an unprecedented rebuke in the heat of an election campaign, the heads of Treasury and Finance publicly repudiated Kevin Rudd’s accusation of “massive” errors in the Coalition’s policy cost estimates.
Unprecedented, you note!

Actually they haven’t – just disowned what Labor said. The additional hole of $11 billions remains. The Abbott calibrating PPL is in fact all taxpayer funded. They are indeed trying to paint savings as much more than they are. The actual cost of running existing schemes cannot be suddenly said to be twice the cost.

CIA files prove America helped Saddam as he gassed Iran
Secret documents reveal that the US Government not only knew that Saddam Hussein was using chemical weapons in Iran – they helped.
By Shane Harris and Matthew M. Aid
Source Foreign Policy
The US government may be considering military action in response to chemical strikes near Damascus. But a generation ago, America’s military and intelligence communities knew about and did nothing to stop a series of nerve gas attacks far more devastating than anything Syria has seen, Foreign Policy has learned.
In 1988, during the waning days of Iraq’s war with Iran, the United States learned through satellite imagery that Iran was about to gain a major strategic advantage by exploiting a hole in Iraqi defenses. US intelligence officials conveyed the location of the Iranian troops to Iraq, fully aware that Hussein’s military would attack with chemical weapons, including sarin, a lethal nerve agent.
The intelligence included imagery and maps about Iranian troop movements, as well as the locations of Iranian logistics facilities and details about Iranian air defenses. The Iraqis used mustard gas and sarin prior to four major offensives in early 1988 that relied on US satellite imagery, maps, and other intelligence. These attacks helped to tilt the war in Iraq’s favor and bring Iran to the negotiating table, and they ensured that the Reagan administration’s long-standing policy of securing an Iraqi victory would succeed. But they were also the last in a series of chemical strikes stretching back several years that the Reagan administration knew about and didn’t disclose.
US officials have long denied acquiescing to Iraqi chemical attacks, insisting that Hussein’s government never announced he was going to use the weapons. But retired Air Force Col. Rick Francona, who was a military attaché in Baghdad during the 1988 strikes, paints a different picture.
“The Iraqis never told us that they intended to use nerve gas. They didn’t have to. We already knew,” he told Foreign Policy.

Abbott’s Indonesian fishing boat plan is “insulting” :Expert
Bagus BT Saragih, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | World | Sun, August 25 2013, 7:45 PM
The Australian opposition’s plan to disburse millions of dollars to Indonesian fishermen, which is partly to stem the flow of asylum seekers, is an insult to Indonesia as a nation, an international affairs expert has said.
Hikmahanto Juwana of the University of Indonesia criticized the plan and called it “humiliating” because it made Indonesian fishermen just “look like mercenaries who did dirty jobs.”
“I think the government should voice protests to the coalition’s very insensitive plan which clearly shows their poor knowledge about the situation in Indonesia,” he said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post over the weekend.
The Australia’s opposition coalition has unveiled its plan for more regional action to stop people smuggling, pledging A$420 million for policy measures that include paying Indonesian villagers for information about smugglers and buying unseaworthy boats, according to Australian media.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said roughly $20 million would be allocated to the “village watch” activities, according to ABC.
The coalition’s immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said the program was aimed at reaching up to 100 villages across Indonesia.
“We need to have village wardens that can be on stipends, the ability to offer bounties to lead to information that leads to arrests and successful prosecutions, also the opportunity to get to the boats before the smugglers do and stop the boats from leaving Indonesia,” he said.
“The important thing is that we stop the boats. It’s much better and much more sensible to spend a few thousand dollars in Indonesia than to spend millions processing the people who ultimately arrive [in Australia],” Morrison added.
“The coalition wants to make Indonesia looks inferior because they just want to provide money and ask Indonesians to get the job done for the sake of their interests,” Hikmahanto said.
