The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

See what happens if a country keeps control of its resources and make the wealthy pay a reasonable tax.

Of course the comment is nothing but BS. I actually read it when I was 10 and was bored with the bulk of it. I then read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass which I didn’t enjoy much either.

This from the Lib press release of 19 December 2013:
“We have consistently said since the election that we will not fund urban rail projects as this is a State Government responsibility.
Mr O’Byrne and the Tasmanian Government are responsible for Tasmania’s basket case economy and are now creating more uncertainty for political gain.”

I make two points – Tasmania only has freight on rail – there are no passengers therefore no urban rail so why make this backhanded disgusting head kick to Tasmania. Second point, I didn’t realise that this was normal wording for responsible governments to make – calling Tasmania a basket case. The rest of the media release is about $800M committed in their infrastructure program for Tasmania but then goes on to say they will continue with existing projects. It all makes no sense as they have not brought down a budget. Seems to be Labor’s program but they are making it sound like it is theirs. Confusing. Well not really I guess because we are dealing with idiots – so many ministerial statements kicking Labor. Grown ups? Where?

Surely, it’s not the name -pseud or otherwise- they use that matters but what it is they say. Either you want to respond to that or you don’t. There’s never any need to, particularly since you’re at the mercy of moderators who could chop off the conversation at any time, or simply don’t publish your every rage. I suppose one writes because one cares, one feels sorry for the traumatized asylum seekers in hot tents, without soap, poor kids in Nauru without toys. I just read about Sarah Hanson Young writing about taking toys for them. She cares, and she writes about it. And writing about bullying is important, because it’s bad, so bad that it sometimes drives young people to suicide.
Sometimes we just want to share something about our own lives, but only if you feel you are amongst friends, you feel safe to write about your Christmas dinners, your garden, your favourite books, movies….
This is why I blog. Why do you, Atomou, write here, or anywhere else?

      Like

      • You’re conflating two unrelated issues.
Bullying on general public blogs, particularly one such as the DRUM, is totally different to bullying directly, either by mail, or phone, or face-to-face. Responding to a bully on a blog is totally different to writing about bullies. Totally unrelated issues.

A statement appears on the DRUM. You either agree or disagree, fully or partially. You say so. A response might or might not appear. You again, agree or disagree, fully or partially and you say so. Your response might or might not appear. Them’s the rules. End of story. Personal emotions directed at the authors are neither solicited nor necessarily accepted. Again, end of story.

In a closed-circuit blog, say, like FB where there is some control (but not entirely so) of who sees your stuff and who doesn’t, obvious bullying directed at participants might be remarked upon but, I’d say, there, too, it shouldn’t engage one’s whole being to the point of destruction.

        What do I write for?
I would have thought that this was an unnecessary question for those who have read my stuff. Simply put, I ask questions, I answer questions, I remark upon things that (to my mind) are important and then go on with my life.
I go on with my life, as I would think, everyone else who does have a life, gets on with it!

I’ll have a conversation until that conversation becomes something else. Then I don’t have a conversation. I step out of whatever it has become.

All this angst about pseuds on blogs and all the whining about people behaving like bullies on these forums, really puzzles me.

        • The thing is, Atomou, it’s not so much the bullying or being subjected to personal insults that gets me angry, but, it is the psychopathic attacks on defenceless people, the refugees who are trying to come to Australia by boats. Yet the left is the enemy of the family. There is strong stream of argument from the left and feminism that the family is out-dated. I would suggest the object is power and control. Break down the family and substitute welfare and the most effective unit of resistance to government control is destroyed particularly if males and fathers are removed.

How wrong can you get by making a statement such as “..the left is the enemy of the family.” ?????….

It is the rampant INDIVIDUALISM which is the enemy of the family. A family is a social unit comprised of individual members to share the good and the bad equally. In bad times a member of Human family even goes as far as to sacrifice his own share for the betterment of the weak & defenceless member within his own unit.

A third the size of the Nile delta in Australia (600.000 Ha) is flood irrigated for just one crop, cotton. If we had Egypt’s density of agricultural population it would give home to 30.000.000 people. Not that anyone is suggestion to do that.

  17. Dear piglets and other pub animals! I wish you all the very best for the new year.
Go forth in this Year of our Zeus, 2014 and… multiply! Multiply your family, your love, your health, your wealth, but, most importantly, your understanding of life and of the wisdom of your deeds!
Love to you all, as well as to all those you hold near and dear!
Have a splendid year, one that lacks nothing and is bereft of nothing! One that is replete of everything you can make good use of! One that is hindered by nothing indecorous or unvirtuous.
May your larder be full but your body line slim and adequate!
May your hearts be full but your wallets slim and adequate!
    The year 2013 is dead!
    Long live the New Year!

Just a comment on Paula Matthewson’ piece and the running commentary from the rusted on Libs. They have nothing to say of any substance whatsoever. Bereft of real comment. Frankly they are all pushovers. See Trump has returned to the Drum, Cherna will probably be next.

    • A lot of jaw leading I thought. Then some downright lies from some that should know better or are up in arms if accused of the same. The spite from some of the staffers is quite astonishing. got most up today but a couple I’d have liked didn’t

and Hungie but he’s hiding behind a new pseudo,Miowarra, Gerard (not very often)…There’s more, but I can’t think of them now…Malcolm…and dear old Arthur1, also not very often anymore…

        • We all have been blogging on Unleashed/drum for a very long time, so I have a pretty good idea about who is who even when they change their names. People are what they are, their opinions don’t change…they don’t all of the sudden develop a sense of humour, become abusive, if they have been nice before…their style of writing stays the same….
Some people pretend to be Labor, when they are obviously Liberal, there are all sort of triksters among the good genuine people…

          Great minds think alike.
Just finishing off the chicken liver pate. Finished the prawns off (plenty more in the freezer), had some Christmas Cake. I really won’t need dinner but I am sure to fancy something later on.

Yes Helvi – I find the pretenders totally hysterical in as much as they think they are getting away with it. They can never hide their true colour. Why bother – the reverse idea is just too awfully ooky to even think of for a split second.

Lola is enjoying some Chrissy tidbits she missed out on yesterday.

  24. Losing control now! I just have to have a quick break. Daughter one has invited four Japanese friends, there are seven neighbours from here and there and probably around twenty family! How many is that? Don’t tell me!
She’s just got to get me a new oven! This one is pathetic Italian shit! Huge but useless!
The Japanese element is why the venue shifted to here. Apparently sis doesn’t know the way of the Japanese palette but I do! What an excuse! And I’ve got this awful feeling it’ll be here henceforthwith! There are three other possible venues but they’ve all got either ready-to-drop a baby any minute now or have already one, or only just met her.
So far, BBQd eggplants and zucchini, shoved in the oven the little spanakopitas in individual pots, with blue vein, feta and spinach, garlic bread… shit, I’ve still got a tonne to get together!
    Break ends in two.

    • Ah – when in Australia eat Australian (with a Greek twist). Some years ago I entertained 20 Asian students – did a BBQ lunch – they ate it all except for the Indian style rice which went with one of the meat on a stick offerings. The students were mainly Chinese though!
Hope the day goes swimmingly – I know it will.
I am thawing a lot of tiger prawns right now.

      Happy Christmas everyone.
