The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

When all else fails (having checked with ISP etc) turning the whole thing off and having a cuppa then going back and beginning again can help. Or, just unplugging the modem from its power for a few minutes can sort it out.

I remember reading the practise of nursing staff taking photos of the elderly underneath their night shifts and then, during lunch hours much hilarity between the staff guessing which genitalia belonged to which patient.
We are all edging towards getting old and the horror of what awaits us in the nursing homes. We now have to worry, not just about some murderous nurse but also my genitals becoming the property of the Mary Magdalena Anglo nursing home. Trouble is that it is unlikely the people of each State would vote to abolish their State. Drawing up regional boundaries would be a nightmare – more so once outside the metropolitan cities. It’s easier said than done. Having been through a local government boundary change which involved losing some parts to Albury City and Corowa and then combining three councils into one – the result has been a disaster. They reintroduced archaic Wards so that we have made no progress. We should have merged with Albury but 97% of the voters were against it. What we got instead was no control and a resulting dog’s breakfast.

Probably right vivienne, however. Many local governments are little more that sheltered workshops for unemployables in my opinion. Having had to deal with many LGA’s, and in Sydney there are far too many, I’d suggest that most are unprofessional in the way they operate. There is no consistency in the way they do things or develop between councils. State governments are just arbitrary lines on a map and often don’t represent geographical regions. The regions would need to have a significant numerical base to work.

        • Yes, I agree, Algy, one Hunter valley council was making a great deal about their ‘engineer’ gaining ‘another’ qualification. A masters? A graduate diploma? A degree? No, a TAFE certificate in engineering. His other qualification was his Higher School Certificate. In other words, he had been getting away with being completely unqualified for his position for over seventeen years.

I don’t think this is unusual in NSW from my observation of some council employees. One building inspector, who came to our place, didn’t know the difference between joists and battens. This was after he had been at the wrong address, which, suspiciously had no building work occurring!

At least in NSW there are some state building regs to which to refer, but, I guess they still don’t always over-ride some of the idiocy of local councils.

I understand were you’re coming from Big, There is is shortage of qualified people in many professions unfortunately. The “engineer’ having just a TAFE certificate is a little disturbing, that he could find a TAFE college nowadays to complete their course is even more surprising. Engineers should be members of the Institute of Engineers and a TAFE course isn’t going to cut it nowadays where it might have once (like 40-50 years ago).

A building inspector not knowing the difference between a batten and a joist, do houses routinely fall down in Newcastle?

          Like

        • Algy, this was a few years back, but, even then, a council engineer with no qualifications?

The building inspector, I think, got the sack. He had, unfortunately, failed to record dimensions of framework, joists, etc. Me being slack, didn’t get the final inspection until three years after completion, and had to get a statement of compliance from a civil engineer, who was happy to issue the letter.

The Newcastle earthquake of ’89 was the best thing that happened to building regs. Bigger pier pads, floor joists bolt to piers. Better ‘tie-down’, stainless steel brick ties, etc. Prior to that, piers were laid on a little square of paving cement!

Algy – I do agree, and Big M – I do understand and know of similar cases though they were 30 years ago. For federal electorates the State boundaries are stupid. Albury and Wodonga have far more in common than Albury and Broken Hill (a day’s drive away). Clearly local government in places like Sydney and Melbourne are a joke and in both cases the State government seems to be focused almost entirely on spending money there. It all gets pretty ridiculous. Kennett changed local government in Victoria – fewer councils through mass amalgamations but for its size Victoria always had far too many councils. But in the end for all the talk I doubt we will see anything other than fiddling at the edges and that the States will remain.

W.S : They didn’t even realise two of our last three PM’s were born in the UK? Hmmmm. Here’s an idea. Why don’t you stay there and make it your life’s mission to educate these ignorant BBQ goers? You would do this country a great favour.

    Appropriate responses!

From today’s Australian (one can access the headlines) – reinventing and promise:

‘Indigenous PM’ Tony Abbott to keep his promise in Arnhem Land

TONY Abbott will mark the first anniversary of his swearing-in as Prime Minister by spending a week in northeast Arnhem Land, hosted by Gumatj leader Galarrwuy Yunupingu.
Mr Abbott will stay in the community with other politicians and bureaucrats from September 15, making the deadline he imposed on himself to spend a week in a community every year.

    • TA promised to spend the first week of his PMship in Arnhem Land, therefore the promise is already broken.

Yep – as I said they’ve reinvented the promise. The Aust thinks we misheard everything on that video tape. Betya he doesn’t stay a week – something urgent will come up. I’d say it’ll be two days and one night. Enough time to zing around and get photos done and dusted. I hope the locals ask him why he is so bloody late.

He’ll have learnt that from Howard. He was very good at the photo op especially in Bennelong. In and out in 30 minutes and gave the appearance he’d been there for the day.

We called our previous local member Tim Fischer, 2 minute Tim for the same reason. In and out in two minutes. A quick wander round, doffing his stupid hat and saying ‘good day to you’. He was the same everywhere – often bought his paper at my newsagent and flashed off with the same inanity. I knew him at a number of levels and he was as good a bastard as the rest of the bastards.

We’ve got a B grade tennis player now and he looks like a buffoon when he turns up to things, he might stay for a bit longer though.

@ScottBE – Are you serious? Compared to male Prime Ministers such as John Howard, Kevin Rudd, and Tony Abbott, Gillard was given the kid glove treatment.
In fact, she received less abuse, simply because most people give women more leeway.
The fact that she still complained is just a demonstration of the exaggerated feminist feeling of victimhood.

Great point. I’ve got some others that follow on from it:

If not for its massive economy and military the US would be a non-entity.

And if not for its massive population and growing military China would be a non-entity.

And if an entity miraculously arose from non-entity, it would be an entity.

And beneath their clothes, clothed people are actually naked…
