The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

Played havoc with second daughter’s business arrangements – whether to open or not and whether staff could get there. But as of not long ago it is fairly well under control and rain is helping. Been dreadful with the winds all around here and now all is calm. Huge relief. Daughter No.1 partner been fighting the fires and due home soon when I hope to get some first hand info. It seems like if you post between this time and that then they dump nearly all then allow open slather before they get back into the banning again. On the other hand the nut jobs of the right seem to post with impunity.

        • I’m not sure why they allow Ben to post his ape-shit crazy anecdotes and home spun observations. I did try to post something about appropriate imaging for different body bits, but didn’t get through. Plus, when I’m working nights, I’m asleep all day, so can’t chase these posts.

That people like Ben can post anything they like and others are unable to refute him demonstrates the quality of the moderation. I’m like you Big, can’t post during the day only every other Friday and anything posted during the night seems to go straight to the bin.

One didn’t like me describing those who think the Australian flag, is an item of clothing and who think that 100 beating up on one person, who may or not be of middle eastern appearance, as nothing more than bogan filth as it was derogatory. Yet they had no problem calling them westies. Now I live minutes drive from what is Western Sydney. They didn’t see the insult, nearly all those that I know who lived there do. The bogans came from all over.

Now I don’t side with either side in that riot, however 100 taking on one is cowardice and gutless, yet those who argued with me saw nothing wrong with it. Or the fact that at Maroubra there were surfers (white I might add) doing the same as those of middle eastern appearance at Cronulla, nothing wrong with that either. Nor a boy loving parrot using its radio program to incite them. They just couldn’t see the hypocrisy.

I tried to comment on Gerard and Sea Monsters little farago. Sea Monster seems content on being a troll there. I don’t see what pleasure they get out of that. Gerard puts up a reasonable argument. SM on the other hand comments seems loopy. Then again one shouldn’t feed the trolls.

What do others think of this – so many on the Drum, whatever the article is about, just seem to be there now to argue for argument’s sake. Reading the sperm donor stuff for example. I look at the ‘quality’ of the ‘argument’ and then just think, for shit’s sake, why bother. Seems worse whenever the topic touches on women’s matters (domestic violence, aspects of feminism etc) and climate change matters. There is the rare outburst of interesting exchanges. I’m finding it too tiresome because it has become repetitive.

Fine. I advocate that the author spend less time wandering around deserts hallucinating. When I read an article stuffed full of definitive, absolutist descriptions of the world, with complex issues and actions reduced to an almost comic book level of understanding, then I find myself unable to escape the conclusion that new species of mind-altering plants are just waiting to be discovered in the more remote areas of Utah.

Conceivably it also explains the Mormons.

It’s taken a few “articles” by Deirdre Fidge to twig to her definition of “comedian”, but I think I’ve nailed it now.

The process is one of drawing on the ample supply of vacuousness in her immediate vicinity, pen some sort of poor (wo)man’s Jerry Seinfeld story about nothing in a strained and not-overly-funny way, and sit back weeing yourself reading all the people who take the bait and treat it seriously.

It’s a new definition of “comedy” I haven’t experienced before – a “comedian” performing in public with a routine designed to have her as the only one laughing. It’s novel, it’s intriguing, but I have to confess it’s also the closest thing to legalised self-pleasuring in a public place I’ve ever encountered. It comes across as an innovative form of time-wasting worthy of greater recognition than I fear it’s getting.

Ben Pobjie it’s not – although I honestly couldn’t say if that’s a compliment or an insult.

Let me be one of the first (if not the first) to sincerely congratulate Ms Fidge on finding a niche she can call home. Too many people would have taken the easy option of going off to play the pokies, or would have taken up knitting. Well done her.

I missed that thread – no comments when I read the article and then I forgot to revisit. The rightwing nutty Libs had a field day – all writing garbage and confirming themselves to be the idiots they are. Cruising having the nerve to suggest he was being censored yet had a dozen or so comments up. Bastards. They should have been mowing the lawn !

  25. Here’s what Barnaby Joyce stated after the UN released its finding that red meat can cause cancer,

“There’s a whole range of detail in the analysis of how you determine something has a correlation with cancer,” Mr Joyce told ABC RN Breakfast.

“I don’t think that we should get too excited that if you have a sausage you’re going to die of bowel cancer.

“You’re not. You just don’t want to live on sausages.”

Some of us have to live on Sausages Barnaby as we can’t afford anything else, dear oh dear.
