The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.
NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.
Cheers,
Emm.

SM, your reply says more about you and your misplaced pride than about Gerard. The way I look at it, we all are citizens of this world. We help suffering people because we are compassionate human beings. Not because we are Australian or Dutch or Buddhist or whatever…

Gods, the unceasing whinging coming from the ultra right on the ABC is starting to make my head hurt. Moderators you have to do a lot better. Start by reading the ABC charter which calls on you to support unbiased reporting and interactions then try to put a shunt valve down on some of the more detestable pests which lurk around here. FFS, you have a duty to those who really own the ABC – the Australian people, not to the government of the day. Start growing a pair.

True, he could be anyone and just found an interesting name to use. Either way, when commenting on a blog/Drum using one’s academic qualification is irrelevant unless the topic is rocket science or maths. If he is a fully engaged visiting prof he should have no spare time to be commenting on the Drum. If he has something important to contribute he should be writing articles for publishing on the Drum. Instead he is just trying to assist in justifying our appalling treatment of a small number of asylum seekers. (I can never reconcile this with the 200,000 economic migrants we take every year, now our now belated compassion for 12,000 Syrians who will underdo the slowest most selective choosing process invented.)

Algernon, Vivienne, I love Mathematics. I have always been interested in mathematics and science. I was good at maths when I was at uni. But now, in my old age, my mind has slowed down a lot, which is only natural. The best years for the study of mathematics and mathematical discoveries are between the ages of 15 and 25. After 25, you are either an academic lecturing students or working in the private sector applying already known theorems where they are needed.
Having said this, today I checked this Dr B S Goh’s stuff. What he does is, he is using mathematical functions to create models.
Creating mathematical models to describe the population growth of species, the interaction of species, the impact of species on the environment and the impact of the changing environment on the species, is fine…. this is science.
But what he did is purely for academics to look at and to ponder. It is pure mathematical jargon. You, I, a layman or a politician would not understand anything from his work.
We all know Newton’s third law of motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. When species act, nature reacts. Alternatively: when nature acts, species react. This is an ongoing process. (By “nature” I mean, and, refer to, its simplest form: air, water and soil. I excluded living organism form ‘nature’ for the sake of making this point.)
The other day, I asked a question at the Drum. If people fell trees on the slope of a hill and then the hill slides to bury people, is it a natural disaster? The scenario I described in this question is an example of how nature reacts to man’s action.
And now, I ask this question: What is man’s action? And for what purpose, this action takes place?
This is a philosophical question. Not a scientific question.
But here is the crunch: Dr B S Goh is right wing. Ask him about “greed”. He doesn’t want to hear this question. He is looking at species and the environment from a Business School perspective – purely from an Economic perspective – He is a person most interested in his own well-being, A selfish dingle-dork.
If he claims to be what he is, his Phd maths studies models and all that jazz means nothing to me.
A Rocket Scientist…Gimme a break !
He is, what Vivienne said above. 🙂

He comments at The Australian and Sydney Herald websites:
Dr B S Goh says:
Wed 16 Jul 14 (10:46pm)
Currently Australia’s annual CO2 emission is about 1.3% of Global Total. In absolute terms in the in the past 20 years Australia’s annual CO2 emission has been stable at less than 580m tons. But in recent years the annual INCREASES of China’s CO2 emission has been greater than 700m tons. Thus over 50 years’ time framework Australia’s CO2 emission is irrelevant. Australia is also a very expensive country for any actions taken against global warming.
The only relevant Performance Index to measure any policy is Annual GLOBAL TOTAL CO2 EMISSION. Australia’s annual CO2 emission is a small and fast diminishing component of this index.
Why have almost all the professors and other academics who claim to be experts in policy making to fight global warming not realize the failure of their assumptions in defining policies for the Greens and ALP? Sadly so. Ah yes all the Wall Street Executives also failed to understand that the assumptions behind the Li Copula Maths formula which was used to value trillions of dollars worth of shonky derivatives were invalid. Reality caught up and created GFC.
The logical cost effective strategy for Australia to fight global warming is to do joint R&D;with China and India in nuclear energy and renewable energies with the aim to moderate the CO2 emission of these two Asian giants with rapidly increasing CO2 emission. Australia should do NOTHING within Australia. We have been distracted by feel good moral hypes from the Greens and ALP.
A measurable amount of China’s CO2 emission is owned by Australia. We buy lots of goods from China and CO2 are emitted in making them. We export lots of coal and iron ore etc which produce CO2.
Logically we need to think GLOBAL to fight Global warming.
/////////////////////
“Paul Ehrlich is visiting Australia and giving lectures on the Population Bomb for the World. Australia is distracted by the politically correct obsession with global warming which at best is the no 4 global problem. The No 1 global problem is the continued global population growth.
Each four months the increase in global population is greater than the total population of Australia.
The continued global population is the greatest threat to the security of Australia. By 2050 there will be severe famines and wars in Asia. Australia is at risk of being swamped by a tsunami if millions of baotpeople when that happens.”

There was an article at The Conversation a couple of years back, on cycling safety and the sorts of things that govt/councils can do to improve uptake/safety/etc.
BS Goh, Australian in Asia commented that gaming theory dictates that it would be safer to cycle on the wrong side of the road?? A number of commenters asked whether he had ever ridden a bike on the wrong side of the road, and, if so, how would he handle left turns against the flow of traffic, and without the benefit of traffic lights, etc. He reiterated over and over that gaming theory dictates….

There is a lot to be said about moderation at The ABC. It’s not ‘moderation’ moderation anymore. And ‘moderators’ are not moderators. They are more like ‘puppet masters’. I noticed that they are playing one person(s) against another depending on the political colour (flavour) of the day/week, to paint their version of the ‘big picture’. Hence, their version will exclude from this picture, your facts and figures which are significant to establish the truth. At the same time they will include cuckoo entertainment to fill up the space and deliver the usual bunfight among the participants. And it’s going to get worse in the future once the new Head Director walks in.
I’ve given up providing facts and figures. They won’t publish it. Sometimes I post relevant information. Other times, I piss on them.

Well I made a VERY long response to one of your other comments, and, as yet, the ABC has not posted it. Until the ABC starts playing fair, I don’t see how we can progress this debate. Maybe, through some kind of FOI request, I can find out what they did with my other post.
See Ben, neither you nor I knows (unless you work for the ABC) who is sitting in there pressing all the little buttons (Hello Moderator!!!). By choosing which of one’s comments to let pass, and which to cut out, they can help to form a profile for a contributor. They can choose to put all the ones in that make a person look unreasonable etc, and omit the ones that are perfectly sensible, can’t they moderator???
Now, I have little vanity. I have nothing to lose and nothing to gain from anything I say, although I try to make my point as well as I can, given the constraints of time. I am happy for my comment to be argued with and I may well learn something else if someone answers me well. I would like my ‘long post’ to be put in please. It holds my views and I haven’t sworn or insulted anyone any more than they have insulted me. If there are members of the public who don’t like my views, well let them put their case and let’s see…
Now, maybe some born again Christian or good old time Christian has his/her fingers on the button in there. Maybe someone who is very highly connected to some kind of politician or other is in there…I don’t know.
Let’s roll the dice and don’t assume that we will all be nice.

Incidentally, by speaking about people sitting on the Drum all day, are you referring to yourself? You probably have as many posts in here as anyone. I say things in here because I think it is important to argue one’s point of view, especially when dealing with idiots.
I speak English English, not Latin English and I looked up my old-fashioned Webster’s Dictionary and it says foetus (‘es’ plural). It also says you can spell it fetus (singular), so there you are.
Sorry I didn’t take Latin at school, but I probably had better things to do with my time.
PS. The ABC shouldn’t feel safe that I won’t try to find out who the Hell sits in there with their fingers on the button. I think we have a right to know. However, the chances are that I will be too lazy to bother.

I beg to differ, Jean. The reason we don’t have Europe’s problems is because of the current border protection policy including turning back the people smuggling boats. Had Labor been still in power, by now we would have million boat people on our streets and the sexual harassment of our women on the streets of Sydney and Melbourne. Yes, I read that this morning. The conservatives gave him a title after he worked for the party, and was paid multi millions. I always thought that one was supposed to have made a considerable contribution to society as a whole to deserve such an award. Then again, the price of a knighthood in Queensland was a $50000 donation to the lib/nats.

Big M, he has some serious mental problems; there is no doubt about it. I could see it in his comments last year. When he appeared first time on the Drum, I thought he was a bit eccentric but later on I realised he is not playing with a full deck. He mentioned a few times that he is dependent on drugs. A cocktail of legal and illegal chemicals got his wires crossed for sure. The funny thing is, the ABC moderators are very generous to him. Perhaps they are on drugs too 🙂

Jar-jar Binks was actually a rather clever parody on a previous onion-muncher Oz Prime Minister .
The loose-limbed swaggering walk, the incomprehensible blather (“Meesa suppository of awl Wisden”) and the total dedication to his own interest at the expense of everybody about him, followed by a perfunctory admission of fault which did nothing whatsoever to either alleviate the harm caused nor make the affected parties feel any better about his errors.
I’m very glad that we will not see his like again – in film or elsewhere.’

Well being an elected member is a public service, but I take your point. The same rules should apply. I’m not a public servant but a government sector worker. If I did what Briggs did I’d be marched to the door, if I used a work computer or work mobile to do what Dutton did, I’d also be marched to the door. For mine Briggs must resign his seat and I’d also be bring in the AFP for the leaking to the press. Dutton should at least quit the ministry given his track record or should be sack. I doubt waffle a lot has the balls to do that.

You have to wonder what certifief practising arseholes we have running this country. Here we have a public servant making an alleged sexual harassment claim. After covering it up for five weeks the Minister resigns.
Today apparently in th Moron press images of the women are release pixellated. Not only that her degree, age a position are also released. The prawn brain education minister defends the governments handling and praises Briggs. I pity his wife and children.
What a complete lack of morals and ethics from this lot. Time someone grew a pair.

As usual there is a statement about ‘making a mistake’, ‘owning up to said mistake’, and moving on”. If it were a Labor minister (or a Speaker who is no longer a member of the Libs) they would rake over it for months. My only surprise is that the person lodging the complaint is female!

Then there are the usual suspects defending the indefensible and using gross distortions of so called logical thinking to twist and turn and defend. I question whether some have a moral bone in their bodies. Ask them how they would feel about their wives, daughters or mothers being called mad f….ing witches and you get stupid questions about Shorten crashing into cars potentially killing women and children. Another making claims of being pompous and lacking in perspective. They just don’t get the sexual harrassment or the complete respect of women.
Without taking political sides here can you imagine if a non conservative politician did the same thing. The Murdoch press would be running an eight page expose and wouldn’t let up for weeks.
I think they’re doing more than shitting in their own nests Big M, they’re swimming in it.

Exactly – their own guidelines ! He’s also just arguing back with drivel and nothing of substance. I came to it late in the arvo having been not at home. Got one in and three subsequent posts have hit the bin. I wanted to say I was amazed that Berg hadn’t given the Dries credit for Medibank, NDIS, Gonski, the Accord, the Henry review etc etc. He’s rewriting history big time crazy. The Libs called for a report and got it and did nothing about it. Keating had it completely reviewed (quickly) and acted on because it was in fact his mission since he was a teenager. He wanted to shake up and wake up Australia, especially the banks who were stifling business. I’m loving the book.
LikeLike
I described the Berg piece as a hagiography which it pretty much was. Carlton was a decent enough chap but pretty much ineffectual. Keating called him Old Rosie. Keating also found the gaping black hole in his figures leading up to the 1987 election handing the election to Hawke on a plate.
