The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

I take it this ongoing social campaigning asking that we respect diversity doesn’t really seem to resonate with you?

I only ask because a Bastards and Fossils Mardi Gras Parade isn’t, in my opinion, ever likely to pull either a substantial crowd or much in the way of TV coverage.

I love diversity, as do you. But, diversity in dickheads and political deviates is not for the nation’s advancement. My mediaeval superstitionists are the romanist ratbags that fill out the government benches. Your suggested parade would not get a crowd. Perhaps a doco of Rupert’s Honeymoon private struggles would fill the gap; Rupert is unlikely to do so.

hph I was on a scout camp about 1980, I was a venturer leader by then. My father also a leader saw another leader go into a room with a group of young boys. My father told the leaders of the camp what he saw. Someone said that he had to be absolutely sure before making allegations. The person running the show was having none of that, marched into the room where the boys were, literally picked the prick up and marched him off the site and told him not to come back throwing his belongs with him. Quite a statement. Fortunately nothing happened, he was removed from the scout movement within the week. He also worked for a particular well known cruise company known once for making raunchy ads.

Some years later he was charged with molesting boys on cruise ships.

I’ve also heard stories of what went on in the Newcastle region from people who grew up there. If true the breath of involvement from across all of society is quite frightening.

        • I didn’t go to scouts, because one of the local leaders was known to be a paedophile, yet was never charged, I guess because the kids weren’t believed by the police. One scout leader was a peeping tom, literally caught flogging his log outside ladies’ bathroom windows.

It was pretty bad here in Newcastle. A friend of mine actually went to see the local bishop about it, and was told that if no kid would come forward and complain to him, then he would do nothing!

    • This is an emotional issue for me because of what happened to the young daughter of a single mother I used to know back in the 1990s.

This is a problem in human nature and in our communities. This is not a problem of the religious institutions or other institutions and organisations. This is happening all over the world. In other countries, ‘the worst’ of these monsters don’t live too long after they are discovered and they don’t make much headlines either. The matter is solved quietly inside or outside ‘the system.’ But the news spread underground.

What pisses me of mostly is when someone sticks his neck out and finds excuses for the actions of these monsters, and if that someone is religious, asks for our forgiveness. Case by case there may be circumstances when the mental state of the person is severely defected, if so, I am prepared to consider not a ‘forgiveness’ but an ‘understanding’. Having said that, in most cases, these monsters are cunning, rational thinking predators…

hph I can only but agree with you. And your last sentence is just so true. Scratch the surface and you’ll be amazed how many people are affected by child sexual abuse. I could go into statistics but that’s not the point. I could show you how it has affected people that I know. I do know that those who summon the courage to go forward and those who have gone to the Royal Commission are empowered as a result.

Mrs A and I saw Spotlight last weekend. It deals with the Catholic Church in Boston. There were people sobbing at the end of it. Excellent film worthy of this year Best Film. For all the bastardry of Pell at least he did try and put something in place even if it was flawed. It little more than throwing a few coins on the ground then dancing with the smoke and mirrors to get anything.

The sad fact is though that this abuse overwhelmingly will happen in the family home by a family member or friend and these people have little or no recourse at all.

      • HPH, the same thing has happened in my family. Needless to say, I have threatened the perpetrator with a slow death. Unfortunately I have since discovered that my ex wife’s family are happy to tolerate a little bit of kiddy fiddling, as long as the majority of the kids are left alone. As you say, sexual predators are never satisfied, and see no wrong, so mollest any child within their sphere.

As for forgiveness, my youngest son reckons he could forgive if there was a genuine apology and recognition for what has happened. I’m not so generous. Unfortunately we are stuck with a severely depressed young person, who will never reach his poential.

If you cannot retrieve my last submission attempt by later this afternoon, I shall assume there is something seriously wrong with your moderation system (although as I check through the thread, I see others have got through MANY comments while I haven’t been able to get ONE comment through). Anyhow, I shall try again a little later. Thanks for caring about moderation FAIRNESS for all. 🙂

    Moderator: Hi RealityCheck,

Please note House Rule: Be polite- Treat other people using the website, including ABC staff moderators, with respect and courtesy. Comments using inappropriate language, which are abusive towards other users, or which appear to deliberately provoke arguments, will be deleted. Refer to politicians and other public figures by their real names instead of calling them nicknames.

I would ask you to please re-send in your contribution with an amendment in regards to correct spelling of the Liberal/National parties, instead of calling them nicknames.

    Thank-you

Vivienne and I were not discussing who was batting for whom and from what end. 🙂 This was about four letter words and how they came out in this particular instance. Using 4-letter words in a discussion is an art form, a talent really. Sadly, I don’t have the skill. The way Vivienne used them today -the order and structure of it- I nearly wet myself. 🙂 Big M and Mark and Algernon are also good at it. More power to your fingers, Ladies and gentlemen.

Thank you Bens for jumping in with that so quickly. I get sick to death of the lies people write about the subject. Years ago I tried to claim modest expenses associated with our then small property – some fencing, a second hand tractor etc to manage small flock of sheep and later some cattle. I was knocked back by tax office because I couldn’t prove I was a primary producer. I thought, oh well fair enough. The following year when I made a nice little profit on the livestock I didn’t include it as income because I wasn’t a primary producer.

[Great comment Jean. BTW sick of trying to reply to you over there, stopped ages ago, virtually never get up]

Its sad that Turnbull butchered the NBN which will now cost a fortune to retrofit. All this because someone wanted to live permanently in 1957.

There is history here look how the stuffed the Opera House and the Snowy scheme half buld things thats OK only cost $B’s to fix it up later.

Meanwhile WS has banked the money from the two pies he sold yesterday. Too busy writing drivel to serve the customers.

Turdbull spoke a lot of waffle about the new ministerial lineup. I thought he looked very tired too.

        • Well its only the lineup for this week vivienne. Someone will need to resign next week or will have been found to be doing something wrong. The talent pool is very shallow when someone like Ciobo can be Minister for Trade. It was bad enough Robb selling the country short, Ciobo would get lost walking up the garden path. Out of his depth in parliament let alone as a minister in cabinet.

Yes all that smiling and doing nothing tires you out. Must be hard when the party is in open warfare with one another.I wonder if he’ll call a snap poll. This war will make the Labor party shenanigans 2010-13 look like a Sunday school picnic. Adolf Turd still thinks he’ll be PM again one day.
