The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

The poison gets worse. I think a lot comes from the same posters and they use a few pseuds for themselves. I do feel enraged at that but try to remind myself it comes from a dedicated bank of Liberal members who hate the ABC but spend all day on its website. Reading comments on the Guardian so much better – two different worlds.

I gathered some information (with facts and figures) from a couple of websites regarding his questions and then I tried to post that information to SM but the mods won’t allow me. Then he blames my efforts of being rude – what ever that means!! 🙂 – He should take his anger and frustration to them. Not to me 🙂 This is the reason why I don’t post serious comments anymore.

It appears the overlords are trying to push this discussion in certain directions by disalowing certain comments? Unless there is a restriction on freedom of speech i cannot accept being censored for no purpose on a site i help pay for?!.. it says add a comment, but as many as i find, ABC censorship becomes evident over public free speech. And it is very frustrating in the same waY CORPORATIONS MAKE THEIR OWN rules, thanks abc. Good to see corporate control is alive and well in this important issue and time in our nation. So like the taxation rules we are discussing you are suggesting no conspiracy over the years to get to the prose being discussed/debated at this forum?. Just try getting through to somone in any corporation with a grievance?! Run into roadblocks from the very first step like even a phone number……. smiles.

You are trying to tell me all these woes came aBOUT BY blind bad luck and no maNIPULATION BY ENTITIES designed to enable simple reasons for something NOT occuring.

There is always a conspiracy, just whethewr it matters to your pocket or yourself personally, determines the difference between conspiracy and poor management. e.g. petrol pricing and competition… fair and competative… legal .. sure! you didnt see it so it didnt happen.. keep dreaming in your blue pill ecosystem.

The ABC is the best thing since sliced bread and it is being bleed dry by those who do not like its independence to shine light into places not lit by our LAW.. . But everyone need s a kick occassionly to remin d us all of our obligations. But never believe there are no persns in any organisation that have no personal agendas. That is what transparency strangles, and why corporations use entities to muddy waters. Yes, CONSPIRACIES occur when we do not get transparency.

As corporations use legal built loopholes to do what we are all discussing. Conspiracies!. YEP….

A nice piece of work by Zaky. Of course Alfie is a fuller. Claimed he drove to the city couldn’t slum it with the plebs. You’d have to have a car spot as part of your package otherwise parking is the city is prohibitive. Even early birds are around $30 a day, casually it can be $160-180 a day.

I rarely used it for a number of year because a had a work vehicle. I found I’d have to chill after driving. Now I just sit there read a paper, look at the smart phone. Talk to people and arrive home relaxed. Even my Penrith can be like that.

Where I do agree though is the trips should be faster. In this day and age a train trip from Newcastle should be at least as fast as driving and faster. Even the suburban runs could be faster than they are.

Half the time I think its snob value not taking public transport.

          Like

        • I have to admit to previously being a bit of a snob about PT, and I still drive most places in Newcastle, but I’m starting to dread taking the car into Sydney. I still don’t understand most of the objections to the Opal card, etc. It speeds up the entire process, is cheaper, and can be linked to your credit card.

Yes, Newcastle to Sydney should be less than two hours, in fact, when the Sydney Olympics were on, it was down to less than that, so they can do it!

I really find the objection to the Opal card strange. i resisted at first due to my bus 10’s being cheaper over a fortnight by about $4.50. But once I started using it the extra expense didn’t worry me. I don’t have to find anywhere to buy a ticket and I can use it on all types of transport. On weekends I’ll drive even to the city where parking can be as little as $12 for the day. Its those on the seniors version that seem to complain the most but I wonder if it was that under the old paper system many of them scammed it whilst still working full time.

I wonder if its an age thing Big. Some places I don’t enjoy driving to and prefer less to drive at night. Mrs A hates the M1 and would dread having to drive north. Even yesterday we went up to Brooklyn. She was terrified unless we had clear road in front of her. She’d cope better if she drove but still hates the road. All stems from an accident we had some years ago when some idiot stopped in the middle lane for no reason.

It was amazing during the Olympics not only where the trains frequent they were fast. How come they can’t do that all the time

          Like

        • Funnily enough, my mother has embraced the Opal card, but she reckons that the card readers on the bus malfunction quite often, so don’t charge for the ride, and the drivers don’t really care.

I don’t mind driving anywhere, anytime, but hate paying for parking (just about everywhere is free except for the CBD in Newcastle), and hate paying for the toll roads that our taxes have already, and continue to be, paid.

The M1 can be daunting. I think it should be six lanes, and the speed limit lifted to 130k, but, unfortunately, there are too many morons who are allowed to drive, such as the bloke who caused your accident.

She’s right about the card readers. I never mind when they’re not working on my short weeks. Was pissed off recently though, when the Friday trip by bus and ferry was wrecked by a card reader not working the day before on what would have been my 8th trip making the ferry trip and bus trips free, instead i had to pay. One good thing is I have to see someone at Dee Why every few months. If I get it right one trip to Dee Why then the return trip provided its in the hour then the trip home all for $4.50. It would have been three trips with the old tickets.

I don’t mind driving most the time but I’m noticing some trips I’d prefer not to take. The accident on the freeway was caused by a Chinese driver. Living where I do should tell me they can’t drive. Even my Chinese friends say these recent lot can’t drive.

I agree the M1 should be double the size however it would give those arseholes who can’t drive extra lanes to be a danger to others. I don’t get why at 110kn they have to sit one car length behind you. I tend to just touch the brakes whilst accelerating then watch them jam on the brakes. I agree that M roads as a rule should be 130 or even 140 km limits. They’re designed to over 200kms.

The M2 is a classic case of a Liberal Party fuck up which we still pay for and will for another 25 years.
