The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.
NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.
———-
The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.
Cheers,
Emm.

This is not a leak against the ALP – it’s a complete farce. The documents were leaked by the NBN six months ago. Conroy has been working on them as part of the Senate enquiry. No doubt they now contain Labor notations. Everything about this raid is crazy – an NBN staffer taking phone photographs, the media already there to film it and it has nothing to do with national security. If you want to get to the truth of the fraudband it is there in alternate media but Turnbull does not want the public to know the truth or the extent of this disaster (financially and technically). You and he should be grateful the documents are locked up in the Senate – you’re being saved from monumental embarrassment.

I am finding it interesting currently how many journalists that seem to look at this election campaign through the thought that the Tories might just be heading for a minority government or read the opinion poos through popularity ratings. I don’t know what the results might be or what particularly dishonest headlines might affect. Perhaps they try to talk up the tories I don’t know
I find it interesting though that there are two seats on in NSW the other in WA which are on margins of 5-7% for them that appear to be in serious trouble. Yet the media only mentions it in passing.
The AFP raid whilst the headline might have looked bad for Labor is now appearing a disaster for the tories and undermining of Turnbull. It demonstrates how chaotic the tory campaign is and surprisingly how disciplined Shorten appears.
It seems 2010 in reverse for me.

It’s wethers. I’ve met a few rams – we used to borrow a neighbours to make love to our ewes. They are very gentle and easy to handle and the idea of tackling them is outrageous. We hand reared a surviving triplet – mum did not want to know them and they were too small to reach her teats. BaBa grew to think he was human. We sent him off for a remedial camp but no good. He would not join the other sheep. He had to be put down art about 8 years of age – dodgy knees, too fat. He’d become daughter no.1’s pet and so we had to get vet out to put him to sleep (no bullet in the head) and hired a bobcat and buried him in one of his favourites spot. Cost $150 to dispose of. We no longer keep sheep.

Well I got something wrong (at the Leadership article). Revisited Ryde councils 11 Nov 2014 minutes, which I read in about May 15.
The vote to inform IPART of Ryde Councils intention to apply for a Special Rate Variation was 9 – 3. Algernon seems to have got that wrong too. But he’s right in that Labor vote was split. The updated operating plan including the SRV, however, was adopted unanimously in Feb 15.
I’ll note however that my main problem in the comment was the idea that Ryde Council was increasing its revenue without increasing services. I consider that political word game. Infrastructure is THE most material service councils provide. It’s the reason you don’t walk ankle deep in mud. And your house doesn’t wash away when it rains. It’s the service most people use most often.
I was also wrong about the Councillor resolution to find savings. They were merely noting that staff had already improved the operating result by $2.5m including revenue, expenditure and staff reduction and reported it elsewhere. They were grandstanding.
LikeLike
SM happy to be corrected on the vote but I knew that Labor was split, they don’t always vote in a block. Nor do the Liberals, thats why we have a Labor Mayor on a Liberal dominated council. I’ve lived in the City of Ryde for 30 years. For the last 20 it should have been under administration. The council itself is a basket case, it employs people who can’t get jobs elsewhere and has done so all my working life. It’s known as a place of last resort to work. The Engineering section for example is unprofessional. I’ve had to deal with them and many other councils professionally, they’re close to the worst. The staff at Ryde couldn’t find efficiencies if it slapped their face.
Now as I said they did go to the ratepayers and ask their opinion regarding the increase. Now I might be slightly wrong on what was offered but I think the rate increase was 0,4,7 or 8,10 or 12%. I think from memory its 7%. A 7% increase on $500 is $35 not $2. Living in a house it will be between $100 and $120 a year. As i said I mightn’t like it but I don’t disapprove.
There are 6 Liberals split between the moderates and the violent right. One of them does illegal work (electrical) without a licence and beats their family. Now SM I’m not making that up my source is fairly solid. The other I’ve had a run in with at the local shops, they incite people to hit them.
As much as its unpopular that the State Government is merging councils in Sydney, I don’t think they go far enough. Instead of the 42 Sydney has now I think 4-6 is closer to what’s needed.
LikeLike
20% on $500 is $2 per week (ish). SM’s put it into weekly figures.
LikeLike
True but I doubt its a 20% increase on the base. I don’t think we disagree about the increase even though one doesn’t like having to pay it. If I compare it to the neighbouring Peoples Isolationist Republic of Hunters Hill then they do a good job of looking after the roads and footpaths as well as some of the services that LG’s are responsible for. Hunters Hills roads are third world and their footpaths are a trip hazard.
However, I won’t back away from what a sheltered workshop Ryde Council is the good staff last about six months then move on.
The shenanigans that the councillors get up to is legendary.

I should add having just checked, it’s a 7% increase including the 3% cap each year for four years.

There’s councils and there’s councils. Amalgamations in the bush are stupid. We are already huge in area. What happened to my own was a balls up and presided over by some nincompoop appointee from god knows where. Our rates have gone up in some areas disproportionately and service via road maintenance and tips is down. A beautification project in local village a farce – took two years of big disruption to traffic and business. Tree cut down and replacements planted at wrong time so that about 1/3 have died. In Sydney the whole thing looks political – a Liberal fix. I used to live in Waverton and then mainly in Ashfield but no experience with council. However, I do believe that rural areas have a lot to do compared with city councils and we do get reasonable value for rates paid. Sounds like Ryde needs a shake up – how long have the senior staff been there?
LikeLike
Councils !! OH yes. 1980s and 1990s of Queensland. There can be no other institution in Australia more corrupt than the Councils . I am talking about those in urban areas where lucrative land/housing development projects took place. Industrial and Commercial developments too. If you have your man implanted in the council board during the planning stage – that is, a few years before the start of a project – then all doors will open for you. That’s how the corrupters and the corrupted grew into a political force and formed ‘the white shoe brigade’ to take over the state government after having achieved total control of the major Councils during Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen era in Queensland. The councils approved housing projects in swamps filled with industrial rubble and rubbish, outside of Brisbane. Many developers made millions of dollars selling crap to people. The story is the same today in all states and major cities and even worse now since almost all of councils’ work is outsourced to, and, between ‘mates’
What is SM talking about a new rate increase blah blah ? How else those mates are going to get rich? Ordinary rate-payers are chickens, just pluck them, that’s how.
LikeLike
The councils here should be under administration. The salaries paid are enormous (some GMs on half a million a year), as is the level of waste. I know a bloke who was employed by our council as a casual for six months, mapping and assessing bike tracks. He wasn’t allowed to ride his bike on the tracks because the safety of council workers riding bicycles during work hours had never been assessed. He milked it, and took six months to do a one week job!
Many of the smaller councils are run by people who also run the leagues, RSL, etc clubs. They run the council the same way!

Vivienne, many of them started there careers there. Have limited knowledge and will actively tell people you’ll do it our way or no way. Some years back they kerbed and guttered our street. I asked if I could see the plans as was advertised. A guarded yes was the answer. Before I could even look at the plans the moron says to me do you understand what your looking at. I told him I worked for a consulting Engineering firm and that I had an Engineering background. Oh he said. I looked at the plans and pointed out that the drainage from the house blocks to the gutter or pipes wouldn’t drain properly. Guess what they ignored that and the water doesn’t drain properly. I could give many other examples. I’m with you in the country to an extent, many though are basically bankrupt with not enough people to generate the rates needed.
hph yes Queensland and the subdivisions below the 1:100 year flood. Half the gold coast is build below it. Just imagine if the Hinze Dam has a Sunny Day Failure, Half the Gold Coast will be wiped out. Or the Brisbane floods with half of Ipswich under water. Most people didn’t know it was flood prone and that the subdivisions should never have been there. Mind you had Wivenhoe Dam not been there then the floods would have been about 7 metres higher than they were.

It’s a long time ago now but I work for my local Council – I was secretary to the Shire Clerk (now going under grand name of CEO). There were 13 indoor staff and about 33 outdoor staff. Many were multi-taskers. I actually did the planning work which consisted of subdivisions and development approvals (for a dwelling). Some years later I was a Councillor on same council. I’ve seen how things have changed first hand. State government became more and more controlling. Councillors have bugger all ‘power’. Yet I am amazed at the goings on in Sydney councils. Some councillors must have the staff by the short and curlies in unsavoury ways. I see good and bad being done and everywhere I see plenty of room for improvement. The accountability required of LG by State govt is seriously way out of hand to the point where they accuse rural councils of billion dollar backlogs in roads and maintenance. That’s rubbish – they seems to expect 100s of ks of roads to all be brand bloody new. I’m still on a gravel road.

The roads are a big issue in the bush. Were many of them were looked after by the State they handed them back to the council many of which are overwhelmed by the maintenance. There are many that do good. There are too many in Sydney though.

I’m really baffled. How do you deduce that I’m hitting the roof? I believe I have a fairly dry, plain-English style. What are the clues that give away my rage? I think you’re reading a lot in to my words that isn’t there.

I believe I have a pretty dry, plain-English style. Why do you think I’m always angry? What’s giving my agitated state away?

Last paragraph is basically the point I make in regard to Nordic boosting specifically and nationalist hype generally. Take it all with a grain of salt. Everyone’s got their problems.
People don’t seem to get the point I’m making. They seem think I’m engaged in petty nationalist point scoring.
I found your sledge about US banks confusing for this reason. I’ve devoted enormous effort on The Drum to criticising the bank system generally and the US system in particular. I mention once in passing that the Nordic countries had their own subprime crisis in the 90s – and praise their policy response to it – and you seem to have taken it as nationalist sledging.
Just by the by. My deposit in the bank is my financial asset. It is the banks financial liability. My loan from the bank is my liability and the banks asset. If everything is going well financial assets and liabilities are always equivalent to each other.
You may have noticed another critique I make on the Drum about this in relation to the Greek financial crisis. People engage in petty political and nationalist point scoring. Greece is to blame. Germany is to blame.
My point is that they’re both to blame. Given that income MUST be equivalent to expenditure over time. And financial assets (savings) MUST equal financial liabilities (borrowings) it should have been obvious Greece and Germany were both living in fantasy worlds.
Greece that it could borrow to fund current expenditure indefinitely. Germany that it can maintain trade surpluses and lend the difference indefinitely.

SM, the capitalist system in Australia is shit. Join me and let’s fight for a better system. Let’s adopt the Nordic Model, a better system for our people. Enough of the Carlyle Wall Street robber barons mafia cartel and panama pricks.
If any of the prime ministers from Scandinavia were discovered to have hidden his millions of dollars in an offshore bank account, he would have resigned immediately – no questions asked.
If I were the prime minister of Australia, and if people had found out that I was keeping my millions of dollars in an offshore bank account, I would have been too ashamed to show my face in public and would have resigned from office immediately.
Malcolm Turnbull, your capitalist mate, has no shame. You are defending the indefensible: our capitalist system sucks like a vampire.
I hope you had a good weekend 🙂

Funny thing, SM, I tried to make a joke
to Andso’s:
“I once built a model of the Endeavour.
It was pride of place on the bookshelf. ”
With:
“Is it in a bottle?”
But the funning ABC didn’t published it!
They think your joke is funnier! Aha aha

SM had to turn the Endeavour story into an attack on Labor.

Um … it was a joke. Ironic you see? You said it was refreshing to have a diversion from politics. I also see it as parody of pretty much every comment the party cheerleaders on both sides make every day.

Thanks, SM, yes it was refreshing to have some diversion today. Sometimes it’s like a slowly moving train wreck, but you just can’t look away!

SeaM, next time when you make an “ironic joke” tell us that it is a parody so we can all laugh together. aha aha aha

And SM always reminds of that little worm in Johnny Hart’s ‘What’s New, B.C.?’ who sticks his head out of the hole looking around with wide open eyes after a big dinosaur passes by. 🙂
