The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

I’m kinda strung out tonight with some good news you will all enjoy. Now I feel mean, like it’s Xmas but you can’t have your present (what a bitch), I will come in tomorrow when I’ve rested or later on, after a coffee and leave it for you to read at your leisure. Believe me, I am strung out good. 🙂

Looking forward to your episode, Hung. I wrote a couple of lines of one, but they didn’t do it for me. I was wanting to write something like you published here last, without it being the same if you know what I mean. I couldn’t crack it. Beats me. It’s like a slippery eel clever. I went back and re-read your previous two. I dunno I’ll ever crack it.

    • Yum. I can’t remember making a seafood chowder and I had to boil up all the left over bits of prawns and fish to make the stock. Bloody nice, the base became tomato and when all cooked and pureed you chucked prawn and fish backin the soup till cooked about a few minutes. Bloody lovely.

You’d think you’d check your citizenship before nominating for government, not assume that it’s automatically been revoked once taking out citizenship.

That said I’m saddened by Scott Ludlam having to resign from the senate because he is still has citizenship of another country. A thinker he added value to government something that can’t be said of many that pollute the chambers.

I suspect there are some where their citizenship isn’t necessarily in order including a recent tory PM.

I appreciate your thinking. It is a sad thing. I wrote a public speech with my father’s help for a comp I won when I was pretty young and my dad and I discussed the notion of citizenship concerning Billy Hughes. The speech started with a rivetting question I remember word for word… and how I was to deliver it… “Can a man born in one country become the leader of another and retain his loyalty to both?” followed by a pause of complete silence and stillness. Radical concept I realised later and from a number of viewpoints to emerge out of the mouth of a regardless fully grown 13 year old.

Both Julia Gillard and the Turd were British born and came here when they were both quite young, Gillard 4 or 5 and the Turd when 3. Julia Gillard was a dual national until she entered Parliament. Of course the Turd is silent on the issue. There have been PMs who were born overseas, mostly before WW1. Only Hughes and Gorton and the above mentioned since. I’d suggest that Gorton was still a Kiwi as well even though he was considered to be an Australian War hero.

In that respect Scott Ludlam is in the same boat, even if New Zealand and Australia have a special relationship where both can live in one anothers countries; the Kiwis treat Australians better than the other way around. Symptomatic of the obscenity of a government we have I suppose. It wasn’t that long ago all you needed was some form of identification (not necessarily a passport) to even travel to and from.

Oh yes the Reciprocity With Australia Act went pear shaped. I got caught in the cross breeze when I went as a family to NZ because of especially hubby to work. It is significantly more complicated than on the outside of things to get caught up in any wrangle and a great deal more complicated when it’s both unofficial and nasty as to the bone.

I’m really birthday caked out right at the moment. I’ll return to this somehow. I have intended for some time to write about the sequences of events that contravened the Reciprocity with Australia Act we knew near backwards before i would leave Australia in 1983 and to boot towing 5 kids (into a headwind?). Its story was intended to fit somehow into my neglected volume ‘The Castle’ I have been writing here and it is time to get a whole lot of it written, so maybe there.

Found this one though, on their agony aunt page. They can’t even be original. Cut and past from somewhere else. Seems to demonstrate true Liberal values.

        Dear Agony Bob,

My work colleague and I decided a few years back that we would put his career first. I agreed to support him in any way I could. It wasn’t an easy decision because I’ve always been very ambitious.

Over the last few years, he hasn’t really advanced much in his career. There was a moment there a little while back when he might’ve gotten a promotion, but his chances always looked pretty remote. He got resoundingly passed up by the selection committee.

Since then I’ve been waiting for him to realise that he just doesn’t have the skills for the job. TBH, I always thought I had more chance of being successful in my career than he did and now I want us to swap roles so that I can go for the top job. But he doesn’t seem to be getting the message.

Worse, he’s started making racist remarks at work. He only hangs out with other white people in the hope that the selection committee will like him better for it. I’m worried that he’s embarrassing us both.

I’ve been doing everything I can in the meantime to show the selection committee what a cool guy I am. I even learnt to play records on two gramophones simultaneously, which is apparently a skill that really excites the younger selection committee members.

What should I do? How can I give him the idea that he should take a step back and let me have my time in the sun?

        Always a bridesmaid

        Dear Always-a-bridesmaid,

Your partner has tasted power and he’s buggered if he’s going to give it up without a fight. You say the selection committee passed him over, but are you sure you would have fared any better? Perhaps it’s your whole family that’s on the nose.

While your gramophone exploits sound like crowd-pleasers, at least among the geriatric Ibiza set, it might be time to stop relying on the advice of your Aunt Sally whose condescending lies mean she’s now on the nose with nine out of every 10 people she’s met.

Speaking of which, have you listened to your company’s views on foreign workers lately? You may find your colleague’s onto something with his sycophantic tactics.

Finally, there’s a small matter of a former colleague of yours who got fired and insisted on changing the redundancy laws as a condition of his return when you begged him to come back.

Those laws are pretty tight. Good luck getting your colleague to budge an inch. Not even Aunt Sally could have dreamt up a more business unfriendly set of workplace laws.

“One of the many remarkable features of this extraordinary documentary is the ease with which it shines light on a species that traditionally burrows only in the dark. It shows admirable restraint in keeping its political biases in check and allows an audience to reflect on what’s wrong with commercial lobbying in a free market capitalist economy. The answer is simple. Top echelon lobbyists manipulate the apparatus of democracy to produce undemocratic outcomes. The problem is about process, not people. If you wonder how the once-great democracy that was the hallmark of American governance could possibly have descended into the global farce it has become, you need to see this film.

No Putin is worse. Trump wants to subvert democracy but so far has proven too incompetent and ignorant to do it, or to employ people smart enough to do it for him. He has been thwarted by courts, states, the media, Congress and his own justice department (special investigator). Putin does subvert the democratic constitution. Like the way he avoided constitutional term limits.

Trump wants to oppress the media but still attracts vigorous negative coverage. Putin has journalists murdered.

The only place Trump matches Putin is propaganda. They’re both good at cheap, strong-man stunts that befuddle the ignorant. Take Putin’s action-man, judo, shirtless, horse riding. Or submitting himself to Stone’s pathetic softball interview.
