The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Just been down to the local shops, Looks like the Liberals have had a constant stream of abuse about this by election. Had the opportunity to tell Alexander myself, waste of taxpayers money because you can’t do simple checks and get your paperwork right.

I was disappointed that my childhood electorate (Banks) that was traditionally Labor but has since traded up and gone Liberal – was only 43% gay. Not sure whether Gough would approve that Werriwa was also saying “No” more than 50% of the time.

In regard to my electorate of Barker, the participation rate was close to 80%. Yes vote carried at 52.3. Tony Pasin is the Liberal encumbent. Said in 2015 ‘No’ and that he believed the great majority of his electorate would not want Yes.
After the announcement yesterday said he would vote Yes because he would follow the National result. In a radio interview waffled about religious protection of children that parents could take child out of school etc. Naive as all get out suggested anyway he didn’t see much of a problem because eg he did not think an SSM couple ordering a cake for their wedding would select say, a Christian baker. Beats me these people have a mandate of power. Ignorance dies hard.
My original stomping ground was disappointing, the Bob Katter stronghold of Kennedy turning in a No vote of 53.3%

I tried to share a link on this earlier, but WordPress, fickle mistress, wouldn’t let me! Note that Keneally, when asked about her US citizenship stated that she renounced it before she entered politics, and it took five minutes to find the paperwork prior to running. Simple, isn’t it??

At the end of the day it might just come down to if Alexander is eligible to stand or not. I’m not sure that it would be in time. After all the whole reason Bennelong is going to a by election is through his tardiness about his nationality.
If Alexander is not eligible then it’s possibly Peter Hendy, the failure from Eden Monaro as the Liberal candidate is the local thinking. The one person who could have knocked of Alexander was the local Mayor. Polls very well with the Chinese.
Personally I don’t think Keneally can do it at this election though she’ll go close. Her candidacy needs a plan B where if she misses out then she needs to run at the General Election where being on the ground will help. Alexander may choose not to run given he’s said the next will be his last.
Yet again we have a captain’s pick, but at least they are good captains picks. Unlike the sussex Street candidate last time.

Keneally seems like a good pick, from an outsider’s view. First woman premiere for NSW, plus she strikes me as reasonably intelligent. Alexander behaves like a rich layabout.

Yes I’d agree about Alexander. To be fair to him he does attend things. Something the rodent never did. I noticed Jerome Laxale was behind her and Bill at the announcement. He’s the Mayor who if he chose to run would have knocked Alexander off. He wants the State seat as he has young children. My guess is he was asked to run.
She’s a good choice and a very good chance. Noticed on the ABC last night they reckon a 12% swing is required. Its 9.7% and only that high because of the loor choice of Labor candidate last time.

So John Alexander believes himself to be a dual citizen and resigns. Will the by election be held on 16 December as it should given he admits he’s in breach of s44 of the constitution or will Wafflealot Trumble faff about and call the by election in February.

Lyndal Howison, moved to the electorate in 2015, having been on Leichhardt Council. Described herself as a concerned mother with a school aged child and she knew all about the electorate and its problems yadda yadda. She’d lost before she’d even started, every time she said something she was shown up for not having a clue. I asked the Nurses Union foot soldier who hands out the flyers before why they served up someone as ignorant of the electorate as her to those who traditionally voted Labor she couldn’t answer. Alexander went on to pick up a small swing.
A good local based person with community ties will push Alexander to the limit. If Alexander is ineligible it will be open slather.

Maxine McKew moved to Bennelong in March 2007. Before that she and Bob Hogg lived in that socialist stronghold, Mosman.

Why are other people allowed to criticize these maneuvers but when I do it I’m accused of lying and producing bad smells?
Anyway let me give you another example (that I’m probably, like, totally, making up).
Under the 1993 LG Act Councillors are not allowed to appoint or direct staff, other than the GM.
This because the Act intends them to focus on strategic matters and to avoid corruption, political appointments and use of council resources for electioneering.
So a Labor mayor at a typically tiny Sydney council (Council A) decided he needed a press secretary. He did actually, because every piece of correspondence that leaves the organization is reviewed by his office and signed by him. Down to flyers for changes to toddler’s story time at the library.
Seeing any problems with the Act yet?
So the Mayor gets involved in shortlisting applicants. That’s a problem – but at the end the staff panel makes the choice – so maybe we can look the other way.
Then the three candidates show up. Two can’t speak English. The other can and just happens to be a member of the Labor Party.
Anyway, guess who gets the job?
Guess who then has an affair with the married Mayor?

Maxine McKew moved to Epping before she was preselected, paid $880k for the house after selling the Mosman house for $1.2m or thereabouts. Once preselected she door knocked every house it the electorate. You one had to drive around the electorate to see that. In 2010 she had the seat won, but with three days to go Labor promises to build the Epping to Parramatta Railway. Classic pork barrelling and the mood changed with the rest being history.
Now John Alexander, lets face it he had to be coerced into running for Bennelong, he wanted Bradfield, the electorate where he lived. He didn’t want to be here. Constantly questione where he lived in the electorate. His pamphlet handlers would lie as to where he lived, Gladesville, Ryde Meadowbank you name it I heard them all. Claimed he door knocked every house in the electorate well I knew of only one and that was in the week leading up to the election. Hwe moved here 18 month later but now lives in the Eastern suburbs.
Lets face it, he’s in breach of s44 of the constitution and should never have been elected in the first place.
If he runs again on 16/12 will he be eligible. If he is he’ll most likely win. If he doesn’t it looks like Peter Hendy the failure of Eden Monaro would be the candidate and a different ball game.
I care little for the Labor candidate who was put here last time. What Labor needs is a candidate that understands the area, the Mayor fits the bill but doesn’t want to run at federal level with young kids. she doesn’t.

Looks like John Alexander might be a pom. Depending on when he clarifies the and if he is rubbed out the a by election would ce 16, 23 or 30 December.
Now hows this for a twist. Alexander was in two minds about running at the next general election but if he does it will be his last. The last election took aim at both feet and parachuted a goose from. Sussex street who had moved in to the electorate less than 12 months before. She was across all the issues……not!
By forcing the voters of Bennelong to a by election on the dates above would be very dangerous indeed for the Liberals. If Alexander chose not to run then Labor would most likely win in this circumstance.

It was Catherine McGregor, they’re of a similar vein. I agree its rubbish about Asbestosa, correct about big ears though. There were many Liberals and commentators that thought that Howard would win in 2007. Most in Bennelong knew he was gone in his seat well before that. The was a Peter Martin piece that was saying it was time to take Labor seriously, effectively calling them the government in waiting. He said Labor had policy and described the government as a thought bubble on policy.

We’ve had a long weekend away for the youngers 21st. Just happened upon the local rag Port Stephens Examiner”. Of interest to many at the Pigs would be the article on “Pet of the week”. On offer was a male cat about seven months old that was found wandering the streets of Raymond Terrace. It was taken to a refuge where it was described as a cat with no name or microchip but was described by the refuge owner as “quite a lovely cat”. It was also described as having semi long hair coat and a “lovely fluffy tail”.
The cat would be perfectly fine in any home environment. I’m not sure if that would be the case at HOO’s, Gib or Anglers home though.

I found a reference, Trove, The Tamworth Daily Observer, 21 May 1913 to visitors who were attendees at a concert at Duri. After a night of festivities, they slept over and the next day they went “to see the harbour and other sights about Duri”.

It was listed in the Tamworth Observer 1913 as sung at a fund raising concert in Duri and I think the Observer reporter was maybe having a lend that concert visitors who travelled to town went the next day “to see the harbour and other sights about Duri”.

Add to that my uncle had a 2200 acre farm at Currabublua and I told him I liked the Labor party as it looked after workers, I was 10 at the time. My uncle told me no, not because of wage disputes etc., but because of strikes. The Country Party hated labor because they could strike.

I think Farrow was very much hindered in her case publically speaking out about Allan’s proclivities and opposing prejudice had it that her speaking out against him was sour grapes because of the marriage between her adopted daughter and Allan. So what in that case, anyway. Emotional and sexual abuse is very confusing. Others do have to speak out. I was shocked myself by Tarantino saying he knew about Weinstein. It is cultural. It is about the power differential. Sickening, indeed.

I was listening to someone speaking about complete lack of empathy. You and I can’t imagine sexually assaulting a child, or murdering someone because we can imagine the pain for the victim and their families. These people have no concept of being able to stand in someone else’s shoes, even though they, themselves often don’t cope with any sort of personal pain or discomfort. Quite inhuman.

I put it down to a complete lack of empathy. Non humans going about their business pretending to be human. They can’t imagine the pain that those victims of child pornography, or people being tortured. They can’t imagine the disgust of their spouse, or of the rest of us. High functioning sociopaths.

Let me take a step back and express it in more meta terms.
I don’t think there is enough evidence to suggest either of the major parties are better at managing infrastructure projects than the other. You show me a Liberal overrun I’ll show you a Labor. You show me a Liberal white elephant, I’ll show you a Labor. Or better still projects where they’re both to blame. Like say the commercial and environmental disaster that is the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
And another meta analysis if I may. The perception of on line commentors on the success or failure of an infrastructure project is largely driven by the party loyalty of the commenter.
I could go on to discuss philosophies of risk and how large complex projects will almost inevitably run over time, over budget or fail to deliver planned benefits; but it seems people just prefer to fling abuse at me.
Please note I have not once ever, in any post, anywhere, claimed Liberals are better at delivering infrastructure,. Or managing the economy. Or the budget. Or where have I once suggested the Liberal party is less corrupt than Labor? Where have I once considered the assertion that some Liberal politicians are wife beaters?

The problem seems to be that retailers are trying to undercut each other to capture customers as they churn to the new system. To maintain their margins they then skimp on the capacity they buy from the wholesaler. Which also leaves the wholesaler short of revenue. Hence to concern they’ll never make a profit.
Despite all their squabbling both parties were in lock-step on the funding model. Off the government’s books and on the books of a GCE. Users ultimately forced to pay with higher prices. But it’s not working out that way.
So my question becomes: what different in the original Labor policy that would have prevented this price competition amongst the retailers? It seems you all know a lot more about it than me.

My thoughts vivienne, is that governments should provide infrastructure. Particularly when private industry won’t. The NBN is transformative technology and infrastructure. Watching 4 corners last night I see that parts of NZ have internet speeds of 1 gigabyte per second. The fastest commercially available here are a 1/10 of that. I’ve had broadband cable ever since we’ve had the internet at home in 2003. I needed it for my business. The fastest that I can get is 36 megabyte p/s about the same as I’ve had for a decade. We’re not connected to the NBN and that is faster than the cheapest package available.
The Labor plan was fibre to the home.
The Liberals a range on 19th and 20th century technologies that will require updating in less than a decade. With this we have speeds and technology worst than many third world countries. The speeds on offer currently might suit someone with their pie cart business however they contain real businesses and services. We also now know that this joke of a system which lets face it fall at the feet of Waffles is costing twice as much as the lies he told in 2013. Then double that again to rectify the mess that he’s left.

We have nephews who are employed as NBN installers. They reckon that in many sites it would be a few minutes work to draw fibre all the way into premises using the existing telephone wire as a draw wire. There are also plenty of situations where it would be prohibitively expensive to attempt to do so. Of course, there are entire country towns, such as Armidale, which have fibre to every home. Not sure why it’s OK for some, yet others are stuck with some third rate, glorified long distance wifi.
A mate of mine was in India last year where they have fibre to the tin shed!

I just looked at the cost of converting to FTTP. $660 just to quote, then up to $20000! Evidently the bandwidth at the node is so low that the fibre is run from the nearest exchange, not just from the node! Planned obsolescence.

Armidale has fibre to the home as Windsor was supporting Gillard. Then again it should be cheaper to do this in country towns and cities.

To be honest, I tend to agree. Turkey banned it in 1915 ( I think), Belgium about six years ago, and have just won a challenge in the European court, France fairly recently. For all we know they could be fellers in disguise.

Do you remember when motor bike helmets were forbidden in banks. I do and it was ridiculous it took so long. I watched Leonard Bernstein’s Musical Education vid on Youtube only yesterday so you’re asking…if me…the appropriate bruin.
And believe me I have wondered all night how it is I did not notice before yesterday the way I discovered polyphony. Mine was a modest beginning as a baby only able to sing a simple sound. Yes, on the one exploratory key only. Ummmm , sometimes Aaaaa. Later I sophisticated that to Daaa and I believe Daaa repeated, perhaps staccato. Unsure and whether i was going for a B # Major scale then or even if perhaps it was a plain middle of the road C major, some smart arse suggested a diminished 7th of a D Major exploratory. See. I got distracted on my way to the distinguishably lovely E major with its extra sharps but that was because my nappy was full and I started crying. That gave me the idea of interposing my developing musical style on an entire household.
Funny you should mention C# Minor. I hit on it by accident but what is one hand clapping. It is still clapping whether by accident or no.
