The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

Thank you so much for the link, Vivienne.

    • Imagine the comments, however. I think they will wait a respectful while in view of the floodgates that can be the only potential. This may herald a watershed in the recorded history of this era. It has been too long coming. I often reflect how one person can distort and cruel history whether it be the bully in a playground or a politician like Jo.

There’ll be a howl if they give her a State funeral.

    • I’ve been texting with the well connected Liberal mate. They reckon its the end of Waffles. They’re learning Mandarin. Reaction by Chinese friends of theirs to last weekends little effort was that it was anti-Chinese and can’t speak Chinese properly. In other words the Chinese will say nothing openly against Waffles but quietly they’re pissed off big time. Our Chinese friends (who vote both ways) are unitedly pissed off.

I’m hoping too vivienne. If the punters are out early to vote then Alexander is in serious trouble, oh and it will be 35 degrees tomorrow so they’ll be pissed off anyway.

That’s why you spend so much of your leisure times condemning every single aspect of Liberal people, policy and delivery but offer only the odd muffled criticism of Labor.

First Dog is also wrong because he repeats the Obeid smear. Keneally is not tainted at all by being installed by a corrupt faction.

Indeed she deserves a medal because she told the truth about him when giving evidence to ICAC.

He also smears Labor with the Dastyari thing. We know there is nothing to see there. There is nothing wrong with politicians hob-nobbing with billionaire property developers and apparent agents of foreign influence. Nothing to see there.

The interesting thing is both the SMH and Newspoll show that Alexanders vote has collapsed with an 11% swing and the % of the vote the same.

  6. I see the MSM is ramping up their nonsense on Bennelong by election. Tony Walker in the SMH thinks Turnbull will get a good result, how on earth would he know. Is he getting constant phone calls and opinion polls? Do they condone the filth the Liberals are spewing out about Kennelly, lies that have nothing to do with the campaign.

The closest I’ve seen was Katherine Murphy on Insiders yesterday where she commented on New England, Barney won because he was there’s, no One Nation or Shooters candidate. What she heard constantly though was that the government was incompetent.

Bennelong is different, Waffles xenophobic comments will not go down well with the Chinese. Saturday will tell.

  7. See this: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-12-10/tiny-nsw-mullengandra-school-with-two-pupils-to-close/9240598

As a matter of interest Mullengandra is just up the road from my home (in country talk) and Bill McDonald was on the Hume Shire Council when I worked there. I think he is about 93 now. His farm was on Sweetwater Creek Road and we bought lucerne from him for our sheep. Bill was still on the Council when I too became a councillor. He fought me tooth and nail not to buy an A1 fire fighting unit (modern in every sense) because the brigades wanted to continue to do up old trucks. Long story. I won and three years later Bill reckoned it was the best thing the Shire ever did (without mentioning it was my idea). Mullengandra is just a bit too far out for hobby farm subdivision development and hence no new families and kids. Older continuing farms either have no kids or send them to private schools in town as there is a bus service. Sad story – the pub went first. The thing is though … this – it’s never been a village, it’s a locality – very pretty.

I once helped an unsustainable Council turn around it’s financial performance. At the elected Council’s request I reviewed a whole bunch of services. You can save $X by cutting such and such. Didn’t accept one proposal (bear in mind they selected areas for review, not me). In fact they increased subsidies on some services and restricted user fees. They worked against their objective of financial sustainibility.

Quiet separately but concurrently, I worked with staff on depreciation rates. Politicians had nothing to do with it. Pretty quickly we figured out the average age of serviceable assets in each class was more than the useful life the engineers had used to calculate depreciation. The real world consumption of their assets was lower than what their engineering handbooks suggested.

Change a few equations on a spreadsheet. Bingo! Council returns to operating surplus.

The elected Council took credit for the “turnaround” in the press. Like Bill I suppose. Gotta have a lot of ego to be a politician, I thought.

But the reality was even more extreme. Talking to them later, they actually believed the credit was due to them. They believed they had addressed the problem.

That said the first week the mood was hostile, people pissed off having to go to a by election. I was away of course for a couple of weeks, the mood doesn’t seem to have changed.

We get two phone calls a night mostly robo. I had one from Kenneally’s team on Thursday, pointed out if she just misses out she needs to run at a General election. They said she’s in it to win, then again this bloke didn’t know where our local shops were and he lives three Kms away, missed the point, the candidate was poor last time which resulted in a swing to Alexander. Also had the unions ring me pointed that out to them also.

I think the Liberals are scared they’re going to lose the seat. Labor is well organised even moreso than 10 years ago they’re pushing hard. I haven’t seen such a dirty campaign especially from the Liberals. The Obeid (and Tripodi) line is used often but the tories are too thick to realise she was the one that effectively put him in gaol.

To be honest I don’t know who will win but it will be close. If the electorate is out in force early then Alexanders gone. I don’t know if he has had anything from the UK regarding his citizenship which was the reason for this waste of taxpayers money in the first place.

Watching Insiders this morning they were suggesting this could be an Aston by election for the government, trying to talk it up. I think Bass maybe more appropriate. Like it or not Bennelong is becoming a bellwether, we revelled in getting rid of Howard 10 years ago and sticking it up Waffles would fit in nicely. 12. Piglets, a report: I returned to my doctor’s office this week and asked him to run me through the tests he told me last week show I’m in excellent health. This is and that is fantastic he ticked off, one by one, Liver and kidney functions first class and so on. Inflammatory response he said cheerfully is a little up. You show a little of that. Nothing to worry about. Take no notice of that. He moved along. I reserved comment.

Your iron result is a little low, but it’s ok on the line. Funny that, I thought. I’ve been wondering if I should eat a Holden.

I demurred. We need to take that inflammatory response seriously because… uh… I am seriously not well. Thinks: as i said last week. Thinks: as I said when I got my friend K uncharacteristically to take me to the hospital couple of months ago and I expected she would leave me there. Thinks: I have as well run out of social workers, counsellors, real estate agents, affordable housing champions, a State government too so stuff is shit.

Tell me why are you not well asks doctor. Thinks: I said last week. I repeat: I feel paralysed, don’t want to do anything, don’t care about anything, I am hardly breathing. The stress of being is doing my head in. I walk out onto front verandah and cannot cope, let alone walk down stairs. Doctor listens to chest as he had the week before. How long have you been like this, he asks. Since I went to the hospital and got rejected because the doctor on call doesn’t like me and we don’t get on. I’m discriminated against. Thinks: You’re showing great courage. Persist.

You’re sick, says doctor. You need antibiotics and I’ll give you a puffer to relieve the stress, if you need to use it. How long do you think you’ve been sick. At least two and a half months and around about, perhaps two m onths before I presented after i was rejected time before that when I was told I likely have diabetes (no, I know this week I’ve not got that).

Stool: great and no cancer. I ask: what about parasites. Doctor: I didn’t do parasites. Thinks as he says hurriedly we can do that: Didn’t do parasites. In this environment crawling with possum parasites because their native habitat is near destroyed. Anyway: back to the bowl.

Bloody amazing antibiotic Roxithromycin. I’ve had two. First time I’ve felt there’s a light at the end of this tunnel. Doctor says: Be back on Tuesday and we’ll get you right, we’ll get you right. I’m going to take some credit. Incredibly careless.

Doctor: (I think) a little embarrassed.

It’s like an Embarrassment Procession really. It’s shit and it’s lonely and it’s embarrassing. I wish someone would apologise to me of this ginormous bureaucracy, and all the pricks on my metoo list as well, did someone say summat about ambitious women in media? Too little. Too late. Trump has to go.

Anyway, now I’m on the mend, I’ll be apples.

Well I’ll tell you what I think the problem is. A bot doesn’t like the word “porn”. It’s not a human making the call.

If a human was making the call I don’t see a problem with it. It doesn’t demean Pyne and it isn’t bigoted. It makes light of Pyne’s predicament and maybe obliquely critiques a legitimate concern over security. If his twitter was so easily hacked…

Although we note the hacker appears to have been motivated by homophobia.

However, being the ABC, it would need to appear with a legitimate point. We know from experience the ABC doesn’t tolerate empty shitposting to the extent that The Guardian does. Shitposters are frustrated at the ABC. Shitposters run wild at The Guardian.

You seem to be confused as to what I think is wrong with your comments. My general point is that they are demeaning, ad-hominem and often bigoted. Pyne gives us an example. Mincing poodle. As social progressives we should be aware that that appears to be homophobic and it reinforces gender stereotypes.

It creates a hostile environment for men who are gay and/or effete.

We’re told that gay youth are more prone to depression, anxiety and suicide because of the general background of homophobia. So put yourself in the shoes of an effette, gay, 14 year old. How would he feel reading your “mincing poodle”?

I’d suggest you can’t stigmatize Pyne for being effete and possibly gay without stigmatizing everyone who is effete and gay.
