The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

Life in The Australian – today’s news highlight: Bill Shorten’s scare tactics have been blunted, with a vast majority of voters supporting company tax cuts, according to our latest exclusive Newspoll. Mr Shorten’s ambitions have also taken another hit as his arch-rival, Anthony Albanese, pulls ahead as preferred Labor leader.

Hi all, Just letting you all know it all worked out. Instead of firing me (which was a distinct possibility) my company gave me a year’s severance. I am currently an international man of leisure.

Re two dead after toxic gas disaster at Norse Skog mill – I worked there when it was in final build stage, during the start up and after – three and a bit years. Safety was always number one in importance. After all these years this tragedy is so unexpected and so sad. The mill is only ten minutes drive from my home.

You may have read or heard this news item: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-21/walla-walla-looks-to-refugees-to-fill-employment-gaps/9779034

It a village in my shire – just up the road and further out from Albury. Primary schools held their inter school swimming comps at the Walla pool (25 metres). Kids there all went to my local Village school (Jindera) and to High Schools in Albury. I bought an FJ Holden from Walla Motors shortly after we came to this area. It’s quiet as not on a main road of significance.

    • Lovely story, Viv. And something of which the good folks of Walla Walla should be proud.

I have taught basic English to some of the first wave of Iraqi refugees. I know from first hand the hell that these good people have been through.

And an opportunity to live in peaceful Walla Walla is exactly the right thing.

Well it looks like I’m in the naughty corner at The Guardian and being pre moderated. Looks like they don’t like certain comments about the Royal family and their inbreeding. Or using Henry and Rachel’s first names. Even suggested alternate commentary where Roy and HG could do something for the royal wedding. Hasn’t gone down well.

Oysters and bugs, nice mix. When I feel rich I do scallops in garlic, olive oil and with fresh sourdough. I would prefer butter for this one but I’m not supposed to eat it due to the lactose. Really easy meal.

Gotta hand it to the conservative politicians past and present. There’s O’Dwyer after her wonderful interview on Insiders, today coming out and saying its too late to apologize regarding the Banking Royal Commission. There’s what’s her name who used to represent Indi, having her time in court with a local newspaper. Fascinating reading.

  14. We had risotto while watching Michael Moore on SBS last night. On Finnish education; no tests or exams and total autonomy of teachers. Norway’s prisons are pitched towards having respect for life, even murderers.
It was a nice break from watching hopeless Kelly O ‘Dwyer’s denial of the truth on Barry Cassidy’s show.

      • Too be honest I like the ham and pineapple combo but I have only just got to really like it in the last 5 years or so. When the boys were at home pizza night used to be ham, pineapple and onion for them and Tutu and I would have mushroom, onion and capsicum, all home made of course. Now my favourite is olive, garlic and anchovy.
PS: And chuck on some prawns if you feel rich.

        • When I lived in Concord we used to buy pizza from a little place called Bari. They made the simples, rather spare pizzas – thin crust, tiny amount of cheese and a thin smear of tomato with a few fresh slices of tomato and s few basil leaves. Fabulous ! That was over ten years ago and it’s still the gold standard for me.
