I can offer no explanation for my liking these songs so much. Neither can I explain why it is that my liking them seems to bring on a kind of guilty thrill not unlike that enjoyed under my youthful covers when, with a torch and a tranny, I spent hours trying to pick up distant AM pop stations; and as for Elvis Presley; sometimes I think I must be the only person who doesn’t like him at all, except for the last two numbers on the list.
So get yourself a drink and close yourself away. It’s time to get intimate with a few guilty pleasures.

Feeling guilty under the covers need not always involve a tranny.
Is anyone old enough to remember ‘Smokey Dawson’?

You know WM, we share some uncanny heterogeneous tastes.
I was never an Elvis fan, despite my the enthusiasm of my contemporaries; but I’ll go along with those two and add in ‘Surrender’.
It is great to see such an eclectic collection. I haven’t heard some of them, but just lurv Manilow and any ‘well sung’ American country. None of my family do, however.
My all time favourites are The Everly Bros–and they have Tennesee roots (and those too probably) of course.
I remember going to see Ike & Tina Turner at The Empire pool Wembley: scene of some brilliant gigs, incuding boxing matches.
There’s nothing like the opening bars of Proud Mary pounding out through JBLs to make the hairs stand up on your neck. You just know that she’s off into it and giving it a sort of Bolero building from the roll it, rollit, with her mouth licking the mike–until she’s burning, burning, rollit rollit.—-rollin da da da dah da dah-rollit on the river.
Hughey was a bit dewy for me, but Air supply is a good one for an extra large shower (gives it the echo that you know you can do).
Aah Cliff on the bus.
Fuck me that Tina Turner’s still going she’s really shakin it upnow!
God bless! As me gran used to say.

Always admired the fiddling in the Charlie Daniels Band’s ‘Devid Went Down to Georgia’… though I always preferred the Devil’s ‘wicked’ solo, to Little Johnnie’s, by far! Much more imaginative!

…is the poodle going to be the new Ab-bot; I read the whole story in Weekend SMH.
Quite an achievement 🙂

I think if the poodle gave the stare that Abbott gave that bloke from channel 7 the other day everybody would be rolling around on the ground laughing. I can’t take the bloke seriously. The bloke thinks he’s a moderate. He wouldn’t know a moderate if one stared him in the face.

Have you seen the ending of Chinatown?
Jack Nicholson out Abbotts Abbott.

Hosni, sadly I changed channels too late and only saw the tail end of this excellent movie…Jack Nicholson was great and Faye Dunaway was still beautiful…
I have to start checking what’s on ABC2 more often.

If you thought Abbott stared, you’d better check out Nicholson. Then you’ll comprehend!!
It’s right at the end of the film.

Hosni, that was a good stare…he was in shock, and for a good reason 🙂

It was about death! In both circumstances.

I was wondering whether you were also savouring the Jake Gittoe’s nose incident. The memory of that stiletto up the nostril – Polanski style – for some reason makes me cross my legs and wince every time.
Too good for either Abbott or the Poodle.

Hosni, a good try, but these two situations are not comparable…
Nicholson lost a friend in a most horrid fashion, he was there, he was speechless witnessing horror…
Ab-bot is doing an interview, organized hours ago, he can’t think of anything to say, all he’s got to offer is an angry stare. Not a good look for someone aspiring to be our PM.

Helvi, I simply cannot agree with you.
As Emmjay wrote above Polanski offered an edge to the film–even in hios acting. Now, as you are well aware he directed this film, and it was nominated for umpteen Oscars.
The long stare goes to the heart of the artistic power of silence- regardless of the circumstances.
I am sure that Abbott did this unknowingly, but it cannot be denied that it was powerful and gusty. I have said so, several times in UL.
Because you do not like him; you will not compliment him: and in any case we disagree on the moment anyway.
If it was good enough for Polanski, it is good enough for Abbott.
Bye the bye I wrote all of my comments prior to seeing the film.
The truoble is that we are all predictable. I don’t need a head count to know who is going to denigrate him, and who isn’t.
He puts his foot in his mouth most of the time, but not this time. It should be on the cover of TIME.
Reporter stuck with shit in his mouth. He was trying to be clever; and came unstuck.
When Malcolm ascends, Abbott will be there.

I was listenibg tio ABC radio about half an hour ago-and when Lindel Curtis asked Gillard who would oversee the efficiency of surgical operations and funding, she said, ” Oh, ther’ll be a new committee set up”.
Don’t you ever stop you people. Just get rid of every poxy layer of State government and ‘beaurotic ticks’.
Sack the lot and bring in an Emporer…ME!!
That’ll give us efficient state of the art medicine and facilities!

Hosni, let’s stop bickering, it’s Valentine’s Day after all. Gez gave me a chocolate rose in a plastic tube, the stem and the leaves were also plastic, not edible. It must have come from Aldi. He knows I don’t like chocolate, I had a tiny bite, he ate the rest!
Now, let’s agree and give Oscar for Julia for her very good cry, and also one for Tony for an excellent stare. It was a better stare than Nicholson’s 🙂 🙂

Now Gez is complaining that the chocolate rose was hollow, more like a Dutch tulip. He expected a honeymoon for $1.99….

Believe it or not, Aldi is one of the few chains that understand chocolate. Coles & Woolies stretch to Lindt now & again, but in my fridge I have….hang on a minute….Dark Hazel nut, by Choceur*. It has 48% cocoa solids and is made in Germany.
You see Europeans understand choclate and even the cheaper Aldi bars are superior to the high sugary 25% ccoa content Cadburies.
…..
I didn’t buy flowers (for Valantines Day) at the Farmers mrkt yesterday, because they didn’t have much left. So I’ll visit a florist today, in Southport, next to Qld X-Ray and barter for a bunch. 🙂
*Look out for it : 200g bars.

Huey Lewis came into a pub I was working at in London in the mid ’80s. I was the head bar/cellarman at the time. I had a Canadian working with us who I had to banish to the end bar (were he normally worked anyway), who was carrying on like a screaming school girl. The bloke just wanted to come in for a quite ale or two. The conversation went along the lines It’s a nice pub you have here.
These sites show give you a picture.

Early- mid 70s. I had a studio in “Haunch of Venison Yard”, just on the western side of Bond Street.
I opened my business in King’s Rd in 73…I think..I’ll have to go back down memory lane now.
Anyway I transferred my patronage to The Chelsea hostelries at that time–and just came into the centre of town for the night clubs.

Well Haunch of Venison Yard isn’t far from the small place I bought breakfast on my way to work. Duke Street near Brook street. Can’t remember its name though.
There were two older blokes who ran the tobacconists near the pub. They’d have been there in the 70’s. They used to drink in the small bar.

Feel rather indifferent about Elvis too. Years ago we babysat a friend’s CD collection while she was overseas. She had absolutely everything Elvis ever did – I played one of them and was bored very quickly as frankly each song sounded the same as the last one. Morning Train is lovely but I give a miss to a few of your selection here, sorry.

I been watching Ashes to Ashes on ABC, this eighties cop-show makes me laugh, the fashions actually look better than I remember, and they all smoke and we had not discovered PC, lot of swearing…and the top cop drinks whisky any time of the day…love it. That’s my quilty pleasure!
