Playlist by Algernon with a little help.
While researching for other things, I came upon this list. On 20 June, 2012, New Music Express released its top 100 songs of the last 60 years, well since its first release in 1952. Below is the top 20 of which I’ve selected 16. The Beach Boys appeared on last week’s list, The Dizzee Rascal tune is rubbish and didn’t feel like including the Sex Pistols.

We need to speak to Julian about that Vivenne, no taste whatsoever!

The best songs are those that have stuck in our minds, almost cemented in. Amongst those are the children limericks that our parents used to sing to us or the simple ditties that children were taught at kindergarten. I still can still hear the ones in Dutch, the equivalent to three blind mice etc. “Simple Simon met a pieman” is a beautiful little tune. I love it.
Good list Algy. Thanks.

When I have to choose ten best songs, books, movies, plays or whatever, I get all nervous, if I ever manage to the ten together, I’ll straight away find twenty others that have to be included and so on….
Things I liked in my twenties are different from what I would choose now…Last night I picked up a book from the shelf that I could not finish twenty years ago, now I love it…

I find these types of lists subjective too, Helvi. What interested me here though is that most of these are from the 80’s or earlier. Given that its a readers poll and most of its readers nowadays born in that decade or later makes it even more curious. The Joy division song seems to be universally one or tow on any “best of” lists regardless of were they’re taken, another Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana is nearly always there too but not in the top 20 here (its in the top 50).
My musical tastes have changed from thirty years ago and most popular music leaves me quite cold. Like you we get older and tastes change.
