I’ve not heard of The P?pli Kids before and picked up this up from Facebook. From the wall of a community activist in Cairns. Rumour seems to have it the Kids are in Townsville. I say rumour because rumour seems hip.
Myself, honestly, I’m trying to work out just where they do fit in, spring from. I just watched this vision and it blows me away for its creativity and the insight it gives so what’s the go with cans of paint and explosive dance mixes, getting together and inhabiting spaces in the street.
Walking around alleys and behind the facades of grey cement and cream sandstone, red brick and cement mortar joined-up buildings, you know there is rarely anybody going to be there in the first place in these dirty corners of industrial waste and urban land some of us walk around to see and which comes first…the paint cans or the waste. It is all waste until it is used. It is all abandoned until reclaimed, ordered in some way, lit, made visible, painted, inhabited, displayed.
This was really good shoe. I note that their getting rid of fine arts out of the TAFE there as Fat Barry is here. Stupid if you ask me. In WA any development over a certain amount needs to allow for professional street art. Its giving many Perth artist a living they haven’t had before.

I learned from watching Parliament other night that there’s no Asian language teaching in schools or that is what I thought was said. Bitter bread.

I think there is. What I heard though that less Indonesian is taught in schools than the 70’s. Of all the Asian languages its probably the easiest to pick up. The art concerns me as Algernonina the Younger is looking to do Art after her HSC for 2015 with a view to teaching in the future. Whilst she could virtually pick where she wants to do this the TAFE option looks like it will cost a bomb. Fat Barry has employed the same donkey who has wreaked havoc with TAFE in Victoria and has followed the stupidity of Premier Clive in Queensland.

It seems too unconscionable to be true doesn’t it that there is none (reference Asian languages). OK, you think they were discussing Indonesian and I did hear reference to Indonesian having less demand for it. I spent a bit of time wondering about demand and supply being a fluid mechanism that if something of qualittative value like a language isn’t supplied there will be increasingly less demand for it.
Algy, I appreciate reading your snippets of reference to the education system as experienced through the Algernoninas’ education.

The vid. above Algernon is excellent work.Good to think we have film makers and young musicians in Australia who have arrived at such a high standard of presentation.

Yes I agree shoe, a fabulous body of work and a excellent use for what appears to be a redundant site.

Townsville city had areas that looked completely run down and smashed up that I saw when I was there recently. I found it stressful to consider the amount of money that transits through Townsville rather than gets into the environments around the railway yards and wharf area, inner city decay and intimations of a sense of economic hopelessness alternative to tall masts and tourism on the hop. I saw big contrasts..

I worked on assignment in Townsville about 16 years ago. It was Easter and we took the kids – then 7 and 9 – snorkeling on a bit of the Great Barrier Reef – some 90km off shore – took two hours on a jet cat to get there. It was a magical experience swimming amongst a huge number of different reef fish amongst beautiful corals.
I remember the inner city area was redolent with decay even back then – empty shops and miserable-looking department stores, homeless people, detritus. Not much of a jumping off point for a holiday destination. Sad to hear that little seems to have changed.
