The Dump

The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.

NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.

give a crap

———-

The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off.  Like a sack of prawn heads  in the sun.  Something had to be done.

Moderation was taking forever.  Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged.   When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !

So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit.  And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.

As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire.  And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.

So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog.  Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity.  Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.

And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments.  Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Cheers,

Emm.

Labor squandered the opportunity to adopt practically any of the far-reaching Henry Tax reforms opting for political populism (mining and carbon taxes) and now has the gall to dictate what should or shouldn’t be even discussed in terms of tax reform.

Whatever happens in the tax debate, Labor should be totally ignored. They had their chance and blew it.

In fact, Alfie, Labor introduced quite a few of the Henry recommendations and then the Liberals abolished them. Go figure! Not every item in the Henry review called for change and many were State matters. The GFC also meant that further work on some recommendations was not possible.

I don’t think it was time for a return of Labor in NSW, but 2019 is a different proposition.I was speaking with my LNP mate last night after he helped on a relatives campaign up north. He lamented the CSG and blamed Labor for handing out the licences, I did point out it was the tories that handed out the permit. Barking barnie spun the same line today. Labor still doesn’t hold a seat outside Sydney – Hunter – Illawarra and nothing over the divide.

LNP governments in NSW don’t survive past two terms, infighting takes over. This will become clear I think when ICAC gets stuck into them soon. I think there are shades of Greiner in 1984 and Carr in 1991 here. The real problem I have with Foley is he’s a Sussex Street man and has not had work outside the party. That probably reflects the large Green vote in many city seats, around 11% in ours.

It is another appalling part of our history of getting things wrong. We’re flogging off (courtesy of Howard) vast quantities of gas to the Chinese and now with the CSG drama in NSW the government hasn’t even got the guts to say NSW people first at a reasonable price, i.e. all the pain and no gain for us. Same thing with flogging off the poles and wires (all neatly gold plated and in good nick for quite some time).

It really doesn’t matter when a lease expires. One can sell it, keep it or re-lease it and keep collecting rent.

It is not the same as selling Alpo.

My own view is that a government shouldn’t own any businesses, excepting some resource partnerships.

Governments have a business; it’s collecting tax.

To help you, just think about the consequences of privatising something (e.g. increased costs to consumers, decreased revenues for government). Such consequences will be fully felt by virtually all voters throughout their entire lifetime. That is, for them it’s exactly as if the asset was fully privatised through a sale.

In any event. About your last point: Why collect taxes (= a relatively small percentage of profits, currently) when you can collect 100% of profits? There is absolutely no argument whatever for the sale of productive public assets, none at all!

vivienne, I think that’s been a problem for a number of years at the drum. I rarely alert the moderator but did when I was being trolled, it takes a consistent effort for them to do anything. I think like Big M, that often his comments are quite funny for his stupidity a lot of the time. I don’t he realises how silly some of his comments are, especially when he doesn’t understand the topic. He tried to compare himself with Fraser yesterday when he’s really a tea party conservative.

        • Just read WS comment about him being ‘like Fraser’. How ignorant. Someone challenged him to list his left leaning social issues. No reply.

He was harping about how he’d fix the country with 20% GST and give money to the CSIRO if they engage in private public partnerships and had a ‘panel of luminaries’ overseeing their work. I pointed out that the CSIRO has done this for years, and made billions for the country. Again, no reply.

Ben Naily is another nutter who seems to get plenty of space for his outrageous ideas.

Yes the Fraser comment was a fine example of his stupidity. He didn’t even live here when he was in power yet thinks it can pontificate on the subject. Yet he can be ignorant about others pre 1988.

        • Algernon, WS is just one of the many pig-ignorant, ill informed, uneducated commentors at the Drum. As Viv says, the inner workings of the mods are unreadable. I often put up a rude, or cheeky comment which gets through, yet those of some substance (in my opinion!) often don’t.

In some ways the mods at The Conversation are better, but they will simply shut down comments on an article where they are being highjacked by trolls.

Indeed, some of the psueds are curious too. How on earth does Glistening Beaver get a gig for example. I do recall in the early days that Unleashed did actually shut down blogs when it was apparent that the trolls had taken over. Nowadays the obvious party staffers get comments up as well.

I just wonder when good government will start, today next week next month who knows. What we have here is a government who had no idea what to do when the came to government let alone prepare for it.

It is abundantly clear why in 2010 the independents chose Labor over the LNP. They were able to negotiate and deliver responsible government. What we have now is a clueless rabble. They won’t negotiate with the senate, if they did they’d find they’d be able to pass most legislation. The LNP has discussed a double dissolution. Perhaps that’s the way forward. The country may then get a Government capable of governing rather that what we have now.

This is by far the worst government we’ve had since WW2. It even makes the McMahon government look competent.

On Chris Earl’s garbage about Fraser there was one comment when I posted mine. More than an hour later there were 2 comments but not mine. Mine still not there. Unreal. I just said that unlike Abbott he was not a total bastard.

This statement demonstrates quality of the minnow we now have running this country.
Is this seriously the best he can do on the passing of a former PM.

“”Malcolm Fraser held true to the belief that his actions were in the best interests of Australia,” he said.

“He was determined to ‘turn on the lights’ and restore Australia’s economic fortunes.

“The greatest win in Australian political history confirms that he had correctly read the mood of the public.

“He was rightly proud of his government. As he said when he conceded defeat: Australia is handed over… in as good a condition or better condition than any other Western country in the world.

“Flags will be lowered to half-mast today and on the day of Mr Fraser’s memorial service. On Monday, the Parliament will honour our 22nd Prime Minister.””

As I was sitting at the doctor’s, waiting to renew my prescription for Viagra I happen to glance through a Vogue magazine (Sept.2013).

I was so shocked, not just by the emaciated look of the models but by their cranky looks. So unhappy, scowling, so depressed and unhappy looking. I nearly lost the will for anymore Viagra and thought of giving it all away and concentrate on my stamp collection.

“you drive a knife into your chest”

You should have married my ex-wi[f]e and she would have saved you the effort and done it for you, when you were sleeping in your bed in the wee small hours.

On the occasions over the years since when I’ve had reason to mention being almost murdered in my sleep, the very first thing every single person has said to me barr none was “WHAT DID YOU DO TO DESERVE THAT?”

Death for snoring? No I didn’t snore in my early 20s.

Thanks Earthling. I know you’re fibbing but I’ll take whatever I can get at face value. It was actually the light in the hallway that saved my life. Her shadow as she came through the bedroom door woke me up in time to fend her off without sustaining a wound by a matter of inches and split seconds.

I wrote a 400 odd word account to MojoMouse hours ago which never got through, probably because it was rather personal, so I’ll just add that we’d both gone to bed as usual that evening, and post-natal depression coupled with post-natal body-image and the consequent low self-esfeem can be an hazardous combination for a young man without much expertise in superficial compliments.
