The Dump is:
For posting comments that don’t get up at the Drum, and for having a pleasant, mirthful or enlightening off-topic discussion.
It’s not for personal abuse of other commenters.
Please do that somewhere else if you must.
Play nicely or piss off.
However, why doesn’t a poster add a link for us to read and comment on here, much quicker. Maybe we can do a bit more bagging here, not that I speak for the moderators, yet.
NB: Being tiresome and boring, racist, sexist or just plain creepy is not playing nicely.
———-
The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.
Cheers,
Emm.

Labor squandered the opportunity to adopt practically any of the far-reaching Henry Tax reforms opting for political populism (mining and carbon taxes) and now has the gall to dictate what should or shouldn’t be even discussed in terms of tax reform.
Whatever happens in the tax debate, Labor should be totally ignored. They had their chance and blew it.

In fact, Alfie, Labor introduced quite a few of the Henry recommendations and then the Liberals abolished them. Go figure! Not every item in the Henry review called for change and many were State matters. The GFC also meant that further work on some recommendations was not possible.

I was hoping for a few more big upsets e.g. Pru Goward. Our local bloke did well (did not win) but gained a great swing as opposed to previous further losses (we stopped going backwards for a change).

I don’t think it was time for a return of Labor in NSW, but 2019 is a different proposition.I was speaking with my LNP mate last night after he helped on a relatives campaign up north. He lamented the CSG and blamed Labor for handing out the licences, I did point out it was the tories that handed out the permit. Barking barnie spun the same line today. Labor still doesn’t hold a seat outside Sydney – Hunter – Illawarra and nothing over the divide.
LNP governments in NSW don’t survive past two terms, infighting takes over. This will become clear I think when ICAC gets stuck into them soon. I think there are shades of Greiner in 1984 and Carr in 1991 here. The real problem I have with Foley is he’s a Sussex Street man and has not had work outside the party. That probably reflects the large Green vote in many city seats, around 11% in ours.
Pru goward, has there ever been a more useless politician.

True enough. But when all this CSG stuff began basically politicians did not know what they were dealing with. It is all very clear now that the stuff is shit and dangerous shit being sucked out of areas where the miners should never be allowed. It is another appalling part of our history of getting things wrong. We’re flogging off (courtesy of Howard) vast quantities of gas to the Chinese and now with the CSG drama in NSW the government hasn’t even got the guts to say NSW people first at a reasonable price, i.e. all the pain and no gain for us. Same thing with flogging off the poles and wires (all neatly gold plated and in good nick for quite some time).

It really doesn’t matter when a lease expires. One can sell it, keep it or re-lease it and keep collecting rent.
It is not the same as selling Alpo.
My own view is that a government shouldn’t own any businesses, excepting some resource partnerships.
Governments have a business; it’s collecting tax.
Alpo:
23 Mar 2015 7:24:42pm
WS,
I am not saying that’s the same, I am saying: “So, for them this is as bad as a sale!!!”… Would you disagree with that precise statement? If so, why?
To help you, just think about the consequences of privatising something (e.g. increased costs to consumers, decreased revenues for government). Such consequences will be fully felt by virtually all voters throughout their entire lifetime. That is, for them it’s exactly as if the asset was fully privatised through a sale.
In any event. About your last point: Why collect taxes (= a relatively small percentage of profits, currently) when you can collect 100% of profits? There is absolutely no argument whatever for the sale of productive public assets, none at all!

Above all untangle from US foreign policy in the Middle East, a place the other side of the world where we our clearly out of our depth. Our friendships there are friendships of convenience only, on both sides, so we can’t be surprised when they dissolve into hostility when the wind changes. Enmities however run deep.

It is abundantly clear why in 2010 the independents chose Labor over the LNP. They were able to negotiate and deliver responsible government. What we have now is a clueless rabble. They won’t negotiate with the senate, if they did they’d find they’d be able to pass most legislation. The LNP has discussed a double dissolution. Perhaps that’s the way forward. The country may then get a Government capable of governing rather that what we have now.
This is by far the worst government we’ve had since WW2. It even makes the McMahon government look competent.

“The greatest win in Australian political history confirms that he had correctly read the mood of the public.
“He was rightly proud of his government. As he said when he conceded defeat: Australia is handed over… in as good a condition or better condition than any other Western country in the world.

Are you Sea Monster?

You know I’m not, Hung. Why did you ask me this strange question?

Sea Mendez changed to Sea Monster who used to visit this site. I can go and check if you like I am just asking.

Yes I know that already. He changed it after I asked ‘the other one’, the walker, if he was scared of sea monsters way back in Jan-Fab 2014 or even Dec 13 I can’t remember right now.

Thanks hph, had a drum run in with Sea Monster, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t you. I like you and wouldn’t want to fight with you. Cheers, by the way, my real name is Mark.

Thanks Hung. I know your real name is Mark. But now I understand what you are asking: You had an exchange of words with SM at the drum and you wanted to know if it was I who was pretending to be SM *at the drum*
I’m not keeping track of every article at the drum so I don’t know what is happening. When I saw BigM’s post above I had no idea that Gerard made this humours comment there.
I thought you asked me the question because of my response to Gerard’s great humour.

And the real worry is we have the most incompetent government of all time at the wheel.

This government is a breath of fresh air compared to the Rudd/Gillard/Rudd fiasco.

“you drive a knife into your chest”
You should have married my ex-wi[f]e and she would have saved you the effort and done it for you, when you were sleeping in your bed in the wee small hours.
On the occasions over the years since when I’ve had reason to mention being almost murdered in my sleep, the very first thing every single person has said to me barr none was “WHAT DID YOU DO TO DESERVE THAT?”
Death for snoring? No I didn’t snore in my early 20s.

Thanks Earthling. I know you’re fibbing but I’ll take whatever I can get at face value. It was actually the light in the hallway that saved my life. Her shadow as she came through the bedroom door woke me up in time to fend her off without sustaining a wound by a matter of inches and split seconds.
I wrote a 400 odd word account to MojoMouse hours ago which never got through, probably because it was rather personal, so I’ll just add that we’d both gone to bed as usual that evening, and post-natal depression coupled with post-natal body-image and the consequent low self-esfeem can be an hazardous combination for a young man without much expertise in superficial compliments.

There’s something open for the uni deregulation and the mincing poodles pissing on the legs of the independent senators to pass his abomination. Of course the usual suspects are the cloth eared Claudius and custard.

Yet again, I really am despairing of the comments on the Drum. Some are the usual suspects and yet more pipe up with utter crap. The moderator should get a bit more discerning.

I’ve just got out of bed to read Patrick Stoke’s piece (the only philosopher I actually like).
The comments are peppered by those who are willfully ignorant, bigots, and those who just plain don’t care.

Third paragraph was the end for me I won’t be buying his books. I think people like Jeff Sparrow blur the line between fact and fiction and in the end can’t really distinguish between the two.
Dear editor: Something on the next PM Bill Shorten would be nice.
