Helvi Oosterman
Popping into my old branch of the ANZ bank to notify our change of address, I noticed a curious little ad at the teller: The Archibald Prize exhibit at the Goulburn Art Gallery. Better late than never we thought and rushed in.
We were hardly in, and hubby was advising me that this must be the store-room boys’ selection. He has not yet spotted the mini-sized winning portrait by Sam Leach, was my guess. So it was; putting my glasses on I could spot this miniature oddity amongst all the usual largish triptychs.
There were some good, and some not so impressive portraits of our celebrities and of lesser folk. I even found a painting, and a rather good one, by our previous neighbour Cherry Hood. I could not quite understand what the goat with its curly horns had to do with this portrayal of her fellow Brisbane artist…
Now Cherry was not the only one adding something unexpected to her work. There was Cate Blanchett’s husband in a little rowing boat; maybe the viewer is to conclude: Mr Blanchett (Andrew Urban) likes fishing! In one self-portrait the artist had a dead fish sharing the canvas with himself! Well, I get the impression here that the arts must not be taken too seriously in Australia, I like this playfulness as I tend to think that a bit of humour lightens almost any endeavour.
A thought crossed my mind about starting a Pig’s Arms portrait collection. As I have only met Mr Jones , I have to base my brush-strokes not on seeing you in front of me but on reading your writings here and on UL. I’ll start with Mike, and as we all know he is a motorbike enthusiast, he no doubt would like his Dukati to be that bit of extra in the portrait. I’ll oblige and add the leather biking gear.
I’ll sketch Hung One On only if he promises to keep his smile on, and no doubt he’ll insist in having a cricket bat in one hand and a glass of Shiraz in another. Not really complimentary to each other, but better than Howard’s cup of tea any time. I hope he’s not going to hit me with this cricket bat after reading this!
At the gallery the weirdest painting was a naked back view of the well-known Australian schoolteacher, who has most of his body tattooed, very exotic and colourful but hardly a portrait. This gave me an idea to paint our elusive Warrigal from the behind as well; no need to panic, fully clothed. As he is a bit of guru to us all here, he can stand in front of blackboard showing us how to spell ‘discombobulate’…
Gerard has rejected his parents Catholicism, but as he is a natural preacher, I have to draw him shouting something evangelical from the churchy heights: You shall love your neighbour and not erect a zinc-alum fence between him and yourself.
Mrs M is correct in saying that grey hair looks distinguished on males, so Mr Big M will keep his natural hair colour for the portrait. A white coat and surgical gloves will compliment his beaming smile when he’s painted holding a newborn, still crinkly, baby. The floral Mambo shirts can stay in the wardrobe.
I’ll give Astyages a double shot; in the first he’ll be playing a guitar and the number two sitting at a desk surrounded with tomes on Ancient Greek history and philosophy. OK, I’ll put at least one adoring Karen in the picture, but no motorbikes…they have done enough damage.
Julian’s curls will be professionally tidied and you’ll find him looking very happy; he’s just purchased an old scratchy record by a minor English band from the sixties on E-bay. He has also found out that he’ll see his grandson sooner rather than later.
Algernon has to be seen passing on how-to vote pamphlets; I’ll put a big sign LABOR behind him, after all he has been our best and most optimistic campaigner during these horrid five weeks.
Vivienne, our food and wine expert, knows all about slaughtering goats I have learnt lately. So maybe accompanying her with a live not a killed goat might be in order. I don’t think Cherry Hood will come to Pig’s Arms and sue me for stealing her idea!
Voice can proud of her achievements in the garden; the Gerberas are in full bloom and even the severely pruned Bottlebrushes are starting to look good. The spring garden is a perfect place to seat her for the portrait, the cat in her lap and maybe a gin and tonic on the table!
Gez has promised to do mine; I might have to pay him though to do some embellishments…

Well the optimism has turned to disappointment, helvi. Maybe I could be a blank sheet.

Algy, most disappointing ! Gez says Labor, I say Libs; I have a feeling the so called indipendents will go with the bullyboy. Ah well, Gerard has to take me out to a nice lunch when it’s all over …

I’m with Gez on that Helvi, I think that Julia is better at negotiating than big ears. And there is a lot of bad blood between the independents and the coalition. Wilkie is a bit of an engima though. The tories did try to put him in jail.
LikeLike
They wanted to put Wilkie in jail…that’s why I’m losing it, the Liberals stop at nothing…when I see Robb on TV I can’t even bear to look at him, let alone to listen to his bully boy talk, they are all bullies…

I admired Robb’s stand when he found out about his depression and th measures he took, but he lost me when he allowed himself to be used as a stooge for the coalition mental health policy. Whilst it appeared good it ripped so much out of other areas. Mental health is too big an issue to be used like the political pawn that it was.
When he talks lately its almost like he is trying to stand over anyone he talks to and treats them like idiots. All the tories seem to be doing it, thinking that how they will win power.

Algy, Robb ‘sold’ his depression to advance the Liberal course…they are all hard heartless men/women.

Agree Helvi agree, it is sickening for those suffering or assist those who suffer from depression.

I’ve read National Insecurity a number of times and if Wilkie supports Abbott’s mob then I will have to assume he has lost his mind after all.
Abbott is not a leader’s a…hole. I have a Lib voting and life long party member who agrees with me!

These are strange times we live in Vivienne. I’m amazed that tory hacks have suppressed the real Tony for so long. I’m amazed in the last week that he has any feet left the amount of self inflicted wounds he has. Still I can’t see Wilkie bedding down with the Tories. I also know many in the Liberal party who think the same

Should have written Silencing Dissent. Both great reads for the inside stories especially for those who don’t

Strange times indeed Algernon but I do have that deja vu feeling. Sometimes I think some people refuse
to vote Labor because they don’t like the sound of the name and think Liberal means what the word liberal means.
Too many just don’t listen to or understand policies and don’t get the differences at all. I do despair especially when
people here can comment in the paper what a good member Susan Ley has been. Well the truth is she is a very
lazy member and has done bugger all for her constituency (and my Liberal neighbour says so too). We miss out on a
Labor funded cancer centre and suddenly Ley and Mirrabella are going to fight to get one here. They never
thought of having one in the first place!

Viv, my English friend, having come from a society with a definite class system, thinks that the rich vote Liberal and the poorer ones Labor. Maybe the voters are divided by those lines in England.
She tells me that she doesn’t understand why we side with Labor even we are not poor. She feels that she has somehow arrived when she votes for Liberal, even she really is a battler.
Once I got annoyed with her and told her : You are so poor and you vote for Liberal, why? They not helping you in any way!
Luckily she has a good sense of humour and we had a good laugh over our little spat.

Vivenne, I was somewhere recently with around 60 other people and the question was asked how many people understood the difference between the Liberal part and Labor party policies before they voted. These people are well educated. Two of us put our hands up, 20 year old and myself. That I found interesting that these people could be swayed by one load of manure spruiked by a party or the other.
I’m still trying to work out how Maxine lost her seat given that it all happened in the last week. I guess I’ll never know.

Perhaps the people of Asian origins were very keen on Mandarin speaking Kevin. Maxine did not deserve
to lose the seat – it was a shocking result in the true sense of the word.

I’ve heard that from other commentators. it wasn’t McKew but the Labor brand that those of Asian origin didn’t like. I suspect we may need to look at the booth results to see what the swing. She was a great local member and a disaster for the seat.
When Howard was disposed much of the press felt that the Asians moved in a block. Looking booth by booth there was no evidence of that. If anything the distain in Bennelong was universal. I can’t see Alexander being anything other than a sportsman out of his depth as well as absent. He’s jumping up and down about an Optus tower on a site at North Ryde currently. I’m not sure but I think he owns or leases the land, he certainly did once.

Viv, I feel a bit more optimistic too, but I wasn’t too pleased with Mark Scott speech yesterday. Why do they have to have Milne posting on UL almost daily , I’m starting to miss Ellis 🙂

Julia laid an egg yesterday – I am hoping it is a good sign. Didn’t hear Scott’s speech. Bugger Milne – they do not have to publish everything he sends in to Unleashed (especially when it is manufactured garbage).

Viv, I did not hear it either, it was in a written form on the Drum side, it’s still there on the side..have a look, it explains a lot of things happening on ABC.
I hope it was a golden egg, a good omen for all Julias.

Julia my chook picked the scores. No third egg today. The first two are the first for spring. Of course, Julia was named after the PM. I’m relieved – but what a drawn out affair this afternoon has been.

Lovely story and idea. As I don’t actually have any goats of my own, might I suggest that I be accompanied by my chook Julia (she is red).

Vivienne would have to be sitting at a table in front of a bowl. Going by her recent comments, the contents of this bowl might come from animals of just about any species, providing they were male.
