This week it’s all women. There has been no attempt to be definitive with this assemblage. As usual they were chosen as they occurred to me for no better reason than I’m particularly fond of all these tracks for one reason or another.

There is no “best” Joni, it’s all good, but that album stands out. The band was Tom Scott and the LA Express plus extras. She was at the time having an affair with John Guerin her drummer and the sessions just clicked around a fantastic rhythm section consisting of Geurin and variously Wilton Felder, Max Bennet and John Hughart on bass. It is one of the most cited west coast albums of the seventies and it sits in almost every musician I know’s collection.

I am a soft shoe slow shuffler when it comes to popular culture since I had to acquaint myself with what the people like. My first visit was to ‘Play It Again’, a record shop in Cairns, almost 20 years ago and Bob, the proprietor suggested a selection to begin. Eventually I had a market stall of s/h vinyl, s/h music texts although specialist customer-driven selection became my book line…opposite but down the road from Bob’s and opposite a world music (new selections) address (I visited all my potentially annoyed competitors before I opened, we got on well). Rusty Rees, the famed motor-cycle stunt man was the darling who offered me the location at the entrance to his market and occasionally I learned from the other stall holders they had “heard me this morning”… so learned I was sometime Breakfast broadcast across the PA. I was in my early 40s, Warrigal. Another brave new world.

The selection here occupied me for this afternoon…a bit painful as I have strained my back (stupid!)…I am surprised how closely I listened but identified in all the tracks instrumentals I had not noticed before…purest delight almost every one. Absolutely tuckered out now. Beddy byes for me when I acknowledge some other people’s chat to me on other pages. Thank you for the good times, Warrigal.

Oh my giddy aunt, Running Bear! Now I really must go and slash my wrists. The horrible memories of tuxedoed farm boys trying desperately to get into the pants of their favourite Miss Showgirl are really too much for a sensitive soul like me.
I must just tell you though, of a B&S we did in Young. They put the band on the floor of the hall and used the stage for the bar. The night descended into mayhem when the boys, for they were for the most part just boys, decided that football was called for. So they “balled” up all the boiled spuds in foil that had comprised part of the meal and it was on. Of course the “ball” only lasted until the first attempt at a field goal. After that it was anything they could make roughly “ball” shaped.
All those powder blue satin lapeled hired suits got completely covered in boiled spud, as well as an ocean of beer and the inevitable vomit. It was a riot that ended in drunken “laps” of the main street in their highly amped farm utes.
How was it we seemed to get away with that stuff then but these days if drunken youths did the same thing they’d be pilloried in the media as dangerous antisocial “hoons”.
Or am I missing the point?

Yes, that particular performance by Phoebe Snow has become an instant favourite of mine too. She’s a wonderful self-accompanist too. Beautiful picking.
Contrary to JL’s position that all Aussie males are huge for Chrissy Hynde, I have to tell you that in the flesh, taking a detailed look so to speak, she has a mug like a robber’s dog. Yet in life, animated as it were, there’s something completely compelling about her face. She is quite beautiful really.
Mind you that was some years ago now but then she was one of those entirely “convincing” people, both on and off stage and I’ve always appreciated the bands pushy pop sound. Listen to her interpretation of Scott Walker’s “Windows of The World”. I think I’ve put that one up already. She could be one of Bacharach’s chanteuses. To my mind she is of a piece with the continuum that includes Sandy Shaw, Dusty and all the other British greats of the sixties and has continued to this day with Lilly Allen et al.
But that’s just my opinion.

It’s a shame that Nick didn’t duet with Kylie miming to Phoebe’s voice, as she looked a couple of octaves short in that little number. And although her numbers are always stuck in the same key, they do show her ligature.
Joni Mitchell is from my free spirit era. A wonderful artist with a matching daughter , I seem to recall. Emmylou seems redolent of Mamas & Paps in the first ; and her excellent self in the other; a looker too.
Donna murders Jon Anderson’s song. But I only say that because his version is burnt into my lobes (temporal or summit).
I know you Aussie males have a thing for Chrissy Hines. My brother, who reached this shores long before me, raved on her and still reminisces .
Joplin is OK (for me) in small doses-once every five years.
I hadn’t heard Helen Shapiro’s version of that song. She was reckoned to be washed up at 15 or so. She had (probably still has) a marvellously deep voice that shook the little transistor radio, hidden under my pillow at school. And I seem to remember a friend of Marc Bolan’s .
SS Sandy Shaw was cute.

Helen Shapiro was apparently washed up because of the beehive hairdo. Its a great shame that they were so fickle at that time in the ’60s. She’s got a great voice. Appently she went onto sing in stage musicals as well as jazz and gospel. She certainly has the voice for the latter two.

That is a wonderful work of art. I was fortunate to sing once. A professor of music taught that song is just another form of communication and we spoke every word into a mirror to observe our intonation as a preliminary excercise to some of the more demanding work… Benjamin Britten’s ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’ and I recall a Cherubini Mass. ‘Nadine’ does it for me.

Very good WM. Tutu and I sat on the patio with a McLaren Vale Shiraz and some cigarettes last night listening to your list. Now I knew Nick Cave was alternative however I didn’t know he was a girl. And poor Kylie, only 3 things she can’t do, sing, act or dance but she looks nice and the dykes like her.
Like Algernon some Dusty would be nice and I’m glad Ella made the list as I rate her as the best female singer of all time followed by Dusty and Nina Simone.
Thank you for leaving out the likes of Betty Davis Eyes etc. although I started to worry somewhat when we got to Donna Summer, very dangerous stuff.
Joni Mitchell is probably the best singer/songwriter on the list especially as there is no Carole. You may like a chick called Eva Cassidy who did a lovely version of Stings Fields of Gold.

But Hoo, you’ve got some Dusty, and The Pet Shop Boys as a bonus. For some reason though the actual video frame hasn’t loaded here so you’ll have to paste the URL into a browser to get a look at that one. For some reason it’s done the same to Bjork and Annie Lennox.
You got a Carole King song, albeit done by Helen Shapiro and the Donna Summer was chosen from ” Donna Summer”, one of the best albums of the eighties produced by Quincy Jones no less. The truth is that like most Quincy Jones productions, it’s more his album with her singing that her album with him producing. While I agree that Donna Summer should usually be approached with caution this album is the exception. What would you expect from an album with Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder as backing singers?
But this is all just pop culture at its most pop so enjoy the ones you like. The rest, well someone will like them I’m sure.
You, Tutu and the Shiraz on the verandah are more important than the soundtrack.

Found it, a lovely song about Christine Keeler. A later piece. I think to a certain extent she suffered the same fate as Helen Shapiro someone for a certain time even though she lost the beehive hairdo at the right time. She perservered though .

Algernon, Astrud wasn’t even in the running for the voice on Girl from Ipanema. It was written by her ex, Joabin Gilberto, who wanted to do the US release with Stan Getx, who suggested that sh should do it, as she had a much better voice!

I wonder if that has anything to do with the Japanese copyright act. Its a bizarre little body of law that one.
You see while the images synchronised with the audio are arguably copyright the person who posted them; notwithstanding the fact that most of the vision is compiled of third party copyrights anyway; the audio is almost always composed of highly protected primary copyright contracts that would attract some very primary lawyer types were those copyrights to be exploited without permission.
There’s a huge hassle coming somewhere in the future about all this new media adaptation of old copyrights. Its a mares nest.

Been clicking in and out all day waiting for the musical arrivals. It’s funny how, when one takes things for granted, we expect a certain continuation to go on. Almost like a right to something. Many thanks Waz.

I concur with Helvi’s choice with Kylie and Cave, but haven’t really had the time to digest the others at equal level.
I have been also busy to get a tune out of my head ‘ and the raging rivers’ which I can hum but when I look it up on youth tube I don’t get it.

I remember Johnny Preston as he had a voice similar to Craig Douglas (the signing milk man), from The Isle of Wight. Another Vectis Lad and one of a twin. He had a few hits in The UK

I listened to Kylie and Nick Cave’s Where Wild Roses Grows. I have to say it’s very beautiful, there’s something Leonard Cohen’ish in Nick’s singing and young Kylie is quite surprising too…

I first met Nick when he was still a spotty youth fronting The Birthday Party. It was at a gig in Warrnambool and they were doing the support spot for the band I was working with at the time.
Nick was obviously a bright lad and extraordinarily well read with an emphasis on the French symbolists and and surrealists. He seemed surprised that he’d found someone to discuss Lautréamont with in the dressing rooms.
I remember the gig because the singer in the the band I was working with was known for his, shall we be kind and say, self assurance. To see a master pop poseur and an aspiring apprentice was truly something. I remember the drummer was the only one in TBP that you could have a straight ordinary everyday conversation with. The rest of them aspired to Nick’s example and were 110% punk attitude.
It suited them. As far as talent went, and leaving Nick out of it, the rest of them couldn’t play their way out of a wet paper bag, which was de rigueur for Melbourne punk bands at the time so no fowl there. They got by on pure punk attitude and Nick’s manic twisted mannequin performance.
I didn’t like the band but it was perfectly obvious that Nick, for all his puerile punk posing, was already going somewhere.

A young Astrud Gilberto. Absolutely luscious. My local used to put this on when I walked through the door! Don’t have so much pull now that I’m the wrong side of fifty.
P.S. where’s Bjork? My 15 year old has just discovered her. Thinks she’s the greatest singer of the ages!
