Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves

Now that everyone’s gone, I can admit to watching commercial TV.
I liked GLEE after watching it, when it started on Austar–so continued when it switched to channel 10.
It is fantastic now, with artists vying to get their songs on it. All of the cast actually sing the songs themselves. Tonight there was a fabulous solo rendition of REM’s “Losing my Religion”, —and a stunning gospel song in a modern idiom. (Reminded me of The Edwin Hawkins Singers that Jack and I hired for our club, back in 71/72ish)
The story lines are ludicrous, but when you get past that you will hear stunning solos, classics, standards, pop, old rock and smalchz (whatever).
Yes it’s nice and cool in here; http://www.weatherzone.com.au/qld/southeast-coast/bundall

Hi VL.
Sorry, I’ve been up to the gills with woik lately – a poor conversationist and a worse ed / mod chez Pig’s. This morning I finished a tight deadline draft at 3.30, grabbed 3 hours shut eye then spent the day in business analysis interviews. FM and I are interstate. Stay tuned for a forthcoming exposee.
Hope this finds you and yours well and prosperous.
Regards,
Emm.

Well I couldn’t let you down Alg. I really like Sandy Shaw’s “Girl Don’t Come” too.

I liked Sandy Shaw as well, I was a little suprised that there was no Diana Krall or Helen Shapiro knowing your liking of the pair.

Pheobe Snow, in this song sounds like an ‘excellent’ cross between a young Joni Mitchell and Tony Colton from Heads Hands and Feet, a favourite “one (good) LP band ” of mine. I like Phoebe. Again for me; a singer with clear diction and a touch of soul (soulfulness really).
I didn’t know that Chrissie Hynde could sing that well. I mention to Emmjay that Aussie males seemed obsessed with her (she was sexy), however she obviously has ‘talent’ too.
Dionne Wah-wick, brings tears to my eyes as I recall cruising prowling, is probably more apt) around The Brighton Palais, or Ballroom (can’t remember the exact name), in my school holidays. I used to go with Steve Shaw *(now–or was up to 3 years ago–harbour master in The Channel Islands, Alderney methinks), and Phil, who married a bunny girl. He was the one that I had a beer with the night my eldest was born at Hyde Park Corner. (I mentioned this elsewhere.) Yes Dionne reminds me of those nights. I thought that I was the bees knees, in my roll-neck shirt.I can still hear those echos now…Don’t make me over…do you know the way ect..! We used to drink pints of Double Diamond. After 7, or 8 pints we became incredibly handsome.
Peggy’s a bit square for me, I’m a bit more Patsy Cline. But admire Nancy Wilson.
I..I.. hang on I’m getting called away…..”Don’t you know I’m not finished”, I’m calling back. To no avail.
Oh well I’ll have to curtail my little critique. Love the rest, even frumpy Petula, except Striesand: her nose is too big.
*Just quickly though, Steve and I went to boarding school together; he a little later than I, so he seemed a ‘newboy’ for a couple of terms. He boght a white rat ti school one term, unaware, or so he claimed, that pets were forbidden. He was allowed to keep it until half-term, then he had to take it home of course. We called him “Ratty” ever since. A name that stuck. Although I haven’t seen him for over thirty years now.

Jules, never mind Streisand’s nose, for me she is too precious, too artificial; the black girls and English lasses are more natural 🙂

Despite being roundly redressed for, “incorrect theme picking”, last week–I will be offering my assessment–in the morning.
Being made of stern stuff; one can suffer a rebuff.
I won’t pick women, because that’s far too obvious. There has to be a hidden theme. Just as last week, “Swinging” was a decoy. You won’t fool this geezer again!

I suppose That I should just complement you on Lennox’s song. One of my favs. She has a voice that spans 4 octaves. I don’t know about the video though. I will look again manyana. After a trip to the lock up to fetch our fridge and washing machine, in time for the plumbers, who hve been digging, torturing (my tiled floors) and ripping pipes up.
Toodle-pip.

Oh Gez, I love that one too….and Aretha and Annie is a good combination…
I’ll listen to some more, but not Barbara Streisand, the song is fine ,I just don’t like her.
I think our Waz is in love with Gloria Estefan, she seems to be popping up rather often in his selections 🙂

Startling insight Helvi, given that Gloria is absent from this list, but you’re at least partly right. Actually it’s her husband Emilio I’m in love with. Well not really but you know what I mean. Fabulous romantic arranger and producer and a gun keyboard player. He’s also a bit of a mover and shaker in the Latino cultural and political sphere.
Gloria has good intonation, fabulous breath control and, for a woman with essentially a small voice, manages to convey real vocal power without belting.
I prefer their Spanish language records to the American pop she is best known for from the 80’s/90’s.
Well spotted!

I tend to agree, Helvi. I’ve never liked Streisand, as an actor or singer!
