Originally a broadsheet newspaper, since 2003 it has been published in a tabloid (or self-described ‘compact’) format. You know HOO, the designers of some of these album sleeves were mates of mine. A long time ago of course. We haven’t been in touch for years.
One can see the similarity between the artwork:Yes, Led Zep anfd others of that era. I think they called themseleves hignosis, or similar.
It was a great time back in the early 70s. All my contempories were earnig good money, but we didn’t give a fuck about convention. We went ot meetings with our bank managers, wearing longish hair and jeans. Oh well pretty much as they do on The Gold Coast now I suppose 🙂 Baubles. bangles & beads ( actually that was more 60s–we wore shoes in the 70s).

I’ve noticed that it is now taking quite some time for posts (by that I mean, of course, ‘comments’), even shorter ones, to actually get up, VL… Though I’ve also discovered that, if you’re impatient with them, like me, you can hurry them up by refreshing the page… for example, if I’m posting a long comment on the Dot, and it’s taking a long time to get posted, I just re-click on the ‘Dot’ button at the top of the page, scroll down and there it is… Usually!
Maybe it’s something to do with the new format… perhaps if we try using the ‘compatibility view’… I might give that a burl a bit later…

You’re spot on about Led Zep, Warrigal… Totally agree ‘Battle of Evermore’ has always been one of my faves; it features the lovely Sandy Denny (better known for her part in Fairport Convention) in what I think is perhaps the most perfect matching of male and female voices I think I’ve ever heard… And what about ‘Gallows Pole’ on Led Zep IV? Another ‘traditional’ folk-song!
I’d have liked to see ‘Bedlam Boys’ included in the ‘Steeley Span’ section… and although it’s not strictly ‘celtic’, how about Martin Carthy’s ‘The Famous Flower of Serving Men’? or Fairport Convention’s ‘Tam Lyn’?
They really knew how to write a good tale into their songs back then (circa C12th) If I can find ’em on youtube, maybe I’ll post ’em here a bit later; for now, even though Peter won’t be coming ’til tomorrow, I’m gonna have to put that top E on my guitar; time for my practice!

I,m sure that Denny played with The Strawbs. I loved there song ‘Lay down’, and another that I can’t think of the the though.

Yes, I think she did, VL… if that’s the ‘Lay Down’ song I’m thinking of… though apart from “Lay down, lay down; lay it all down!” I never could quite figure out the lyric to it… though it was a great song… Never knew it was about Jesus though…
One of these days, I’ll get round to setting up my vynil-spinner so I can play all my old vynil records too… but I’ve only been here what…? Eight months now… And between them, YouTube and Wazza’s selections have kept me interested enough so I haven’t really needed them… Of course, first I’ll have to figure out where to set it up! And of course, this is also hampered by my ‘never do today what you can put off ’til tommorow’ philosophy… a liberal translation taken from the Spanish, one-word philosophy known simply as “Manyana!”
