The Pig’s Arms exists because a dozen or so years ago our other favourite playpen – the ABC’s Unleashed blogsphere started to go off. Like a sack of prawn heads in the sun. Something had to be done.
Moderation was taking forever. Comments seemed to be rejected randomly – outrageous ones appeared and reasoned ones were pinged. When they released the Drum / Unleashed ….. things actually got worse !
So many pieces from professional writers appear with no obvious merit. And the moderation has become, to put it frankly, appalling.
As a former contributor and a commenter, I was deeply disappointed at the plummeting quality from our pre-eminent media empire. And I resented so many challenging or dare I say, witty or funny posts in which we’ve invested seconds of our precious time – getting the chop.
So here, for all our benefit – is an open slather blog. Copy and paste your best rejected comments here for posterity. Does not matter whether you’re posting on the Guardian, First Dog on the Moon or wherever else.
And sprinkle pointers to the Pig’s Arms amongst your comments. Let’s try to rescue some of the old faithful.

Thanks Mark… yes, indeed. SRV is one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time.
Blues is mostly about improvising solos and it’s considered boring (by professional blues players) to play more than two choruses of the same 12 bars… (Though tbh, I think this is, to some extent at least, a bit of ‘one-up-man-ship’ on Dizzy Gillespie, who once famously said, “Playing more than four choruses is practicing…”)
In these videos, I’ve played four choruses of each ‘blues’, but that’s ’cause I’m still learning and these were taken from a recording of one of my practice sessions.
I have made some attempts at improvising solos along with backing tracks, not entirely without success, but tbh, the (‘ready-written’) blues that I’ve recorded along with these videos do have a more easily recognizable ‘structure’ than some of my improvisations, which are really still largely just me ‘noodling’ around the pentatonic and blues scales.
I wish I had more opportunities to ‘jam’ (i.e. ‘improvise’) properly in a live setting with other musicians, but in fact, I do have a few videos of me improvising at my very first real, live ‘blues jam’ at Girgarre Moosic Muster in January 2019… and I don’t think they sound too bad.
Maybe I’ll post a couple of these over the next few weeks… and you can tell me what you think. I’ll email you the first link soon…

These videos were all taken on Lake Bonney at Barmera in ’18 the last time I was there… as I remember it, none of the four carp I caught that afternoon were less than 50 cms and the largest, I think, was about 54 cms.
Info for fishermen planning to do the same: I was using live earthworms for bait, bought at the local bait shop, though carp can be caught on just about anything, including sweetcorn, peas and bread.

G’day Mark, and thanks for fishing it out of the spam queue… I don’t know what’s happening as my YouTube ‘dashboard’ shows ‘no restrictions’, so I’m really not sure what to do.
However, I’ve discovered that if you click the ‘watch on YouTube’ button which is right under where it says ‘Video Unavailable’, that you can watch it on YouTube… (Tbh I ‘right-clicked’ it and opened it in another tab… but I’m assuming it would work if you just clicked on it…)
Until I figure out what’s gone wrong that’ll have to do, I suppose. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I’ve made my YT channel ‘private’, though I really don’t think I have. I’ll check it later… but for now it’s time for my guitar practice session…

I think I can detect a lot of British influences, though… they sound a bit ‘Supertramp’-ish, and there are phrases which remind me of Jethro Tull and others which are reminiscent of Genesis. (And that’s just from the first two tracks, which is all I’ve listened to so far…)
Btw, I’m planning to post another video this arvo… do you think you could check the spam folder for me tomorrow, just in case it ends up there? I don’t want to accidentally post multiples again. Not sure where exactly to post this as this pub seems to have far fewer rooms than it used to have… but I know it will at least be seen here, so here is where I’ll post it.
I’d have posted it much sooner, but I had a ‘medical emergency’ a week ago Friday and only got out of hospital on Wednesday. No, NOT COVID 19 (or so they tell me, anyway!) But it was a very nasty bout of pneumonia complicated by pulmonary embolisms. I’ll be on anti-coagulants for the next six months…
Anyway, here goes… Hope you all enjoy this video of me in my (motorized) kayak sailing past the wreck of the Santiago in the North Arm of the Port River, just behind Garden Island. The background music is me, playing Fleetwood Mac’s “Albatross” on my Epiphone ‘Dot’.

I hope the piglets will enjoy them (or, more accurately, ‘it’…) I think they’re worth watching for the scenery alone. It looks very peaceful, but it can be hell just before sunset when the mozzies come out of the mangroves in their billions! The two versions above are the two attempts I made to post this video before I let Emmjay know they didn’t appear to be working. (Still don’t know what the delay was…) Emmjay then asked me to send him a link via email and said he’d post it when he could… and he did, of course, but without any commentary from me.
And then somehow these two earlier attempts just seem to have popped up.
Lol! I suppose it seems like ‘overkill’, but at least the video finally gets to be seen. I’m quite proud of this one as it’s one of my earliest attempts to put music to a kayaking video, and the scenery is just gorgeous… check out the colors in that sky! I reckon the visuals and the audio could have been made for each other! 😀
Anyway, with that encouragement I’ll try to post some more… maybe about one per week or something. (More or less… I’m not good with strict timetables! For me time seems to all run together…)

They are civil trials not criminal trials. My understanding is the civil requires a lower level of proof than a criminal trial.

(or more accurately, their ‘flock’) will probably stump up for that… So in the end it will be the (other) victims who will pay the penalty if any of them are proven.
(I say ‘other victims’ because the entire church membership are, in a sense, victims of this kind of crime, albeit to a lesser degree. But their children are all potential future victims, too, as evidently the ‘culture of acceptance’ of pedophiles within the Church is not only alive and well, but doing very well, thank you very much!)

I see the milineau of right wing manure writers has come out with all guns blazing. Claiming that the rock spider was found innocent. No beyond reasonable doubt the High Court said was not established, and that the victim was a credible witness.
I watched that. Victims don’t make stuff up and multiple victims came forward.
I thought this particular Pope might have been different regarding child abuse from within the Catholic Church. It’s quite clear he is not and is happy to protect nonces.

At the end of the day it’s all about defending the wealth of the Catholic Church. And a Monsignor is more than happy to purger himself to protect the edifice that is the Catholic Church, say he couldn’t possibly have done that because his routine has been to do this at the at end of each Mass. Somehow his “policy” is believed over what all courts said was a credible witness. Doesn’t occur to anyone he could have deviated from his policy.
You can see the Pell defence being used in trials in the future, which should bring shudders to any trial by jury.

I’m usually loath to comment on legal cases, for the simple fact that I wasn’t there, but, as you say, the witness appeared to be credible (sadly another witness died prior to the hearing) and very specific regarding location, timing, etc. To say that he was wrong because the accused ‘always’ farewells the congregation at that time amounts to hearsay.
I did see an interview with a former Catholic Brother, who was a legal specialist on dealing with such cases. There is absolutely nothing the church won’t do to secure a favourable verdict.

I’m much the same. This one seems different though, the protection and obfuscation of the perpetrators, knows no bounds for the Catholic Church.
I don’t often quote biblical text here and prefer not to, but Mark 11:15-19 is pertinent.

Not hard to draw comparisons between the chief priests and the Catholic Church. That’s what the Catholic Church has become; a den of robbers, an organisation of evil.

I went to the local library to get a print-out of a few song-sheets yesterday, and it was closed for the duration! Went to Officeworks this arvo for a the same thing… social distancing marks on the floor spaced at 2 meters for the queues and the lady who served me (all self-serve machines closed to ‘minimize risk’) made me use my card for $1.25… (or she’d have to put rubber gloves on!)
The more I realize what this virus has achieved that ‘just happen to’ fall in line with the desires of the NWO, the more I’m convinced it was created in a lab.
E.g. Atomizing of the global populace through social isolation of individuals, thereby eliminating any possibility of public demonstrations from an angry public if and when they find out the real cause! Also acting as a very effective ‘curfew’ and putting us all under even more serious control than martial law! On top of which it very much looks like they’re going to introduce a totally ‘cashless’ society – if they haven’t already! – which has been a dream of the NWO for a long time now! And of course, the crashing of all global economies, also helping to facilitate the introduction of their new ‘cashless’ society! (And of course, multi-trillion dollar bail-outs for the banks when this happens!)

I agree. The other five coronaviruses that infect humans are pretty benign. Why is this so virulent and occasionally fatal? We seem to forget that Influenza A is very virulent, and also occasionally fatal. Hepatitis B isn’t so virulent but can kill through hepatic failure, or liver cancer. It also persists for many months on various surfaces or media. There have been many cases of bubonic plague in California, but no one seems to give a sh#* about that.
In short, I don’t know. Part of me thinks it’s bullshit, another part says, run for the hills!
I’ll drink another Coopers Sparkling instead!

The reason there have been a few cases of bubonic plague in California, M, is because the USA IS working with ‘biological weapons’… and that’s one of them. They also have smallpox to play with. Something like cooking up an occasionally fatal coronavirus would be childs’ play for them! I could believe that the first cases came from American servicemen in Wuhan, because it would be unlikely for the Chinese to use such a biological weapon on their own… As for the fact that it has now spread to the USA, well, that just goes to show that psychopaths and/or sociopaths rarely think about the consequences of their actions! M, from the kind of conditions you describe, we might expect all kinds of hepatitis, typhus and maybe even cholera… but plague?
No, I doubt it… that kind of virus has to come from somewhere, and the USA HAS been cultivating diseases which were thought to have been eradicated for decades in labs, including bubonic plague, and smallpox, and, under the cover story of ‘trying to prevent, or ‘fight against’ biological warfare, in all probability conducting experiments in biological warfare themselves.
I remember a similar ‘leak’ of plague from labs back in the 70s, when conditions were nowhere near as bad as they are now.
Now, whether these ‘leaks’ are accidental, or for some secret experiment on its own population, is open to debate, I suppose… But we DO KNOW that the USA HAS been conducting biological (and mental) experiments on its own population for decades… eg. MK Ultra… not to mention the chem-trails. “We ain’t in Kansas any more, Toto!”

Okay M, I sit corrected… it’s not a virus but a bacterium. But it still has to come from somewhere. It’s not ‘sui generis’, is it? And the fact that it’s a bacterium rather than a virus doesn’t change the truth of the other things I’ve said about the USA cultivating such diseases in labs… and experimenting on their own people. (And they’re not the only ones who do this, either! Both the Brits and the Aussies have been known to so this… remember Maralinga? Sure it was a British experiment, but Aussies had to collaborate in it!)

There have been small pockets of bubonic plague throughout the United States since 1900. There are also places all over the world where it remains endemic. in particular, South Africa, Madagascar and parts of South America. Hence there are sufficient reservoirs of the disease. It hasn’t arisen de novo, and while I don’t doubt that the US is doing plenty of research on disease warfare, I do doubt that the current bubonic plague cases in California are part of some government conspiracy.

It still gives a ‘benign’ interpretation of why they’re creating more virulent strains of diseases, rather than admit they’re playing around with biological warfare, but the NWO have an agenda for depopulating the globe by about 90%… and diseases like these could do the job very well.
Also, remember that Prince Phillip is on record as saying that if there is such a thing as reincarnation, that he’d like to come back as a virus and wipe out most of humanity. (Yes, he actually DID say this!)

Btw, M… did you know that the third largest cause of death in the USA currently is known as ‘iatrogenic causes’… I.e. ‘doctor-created’ causes…?
Now, it could just be down to incompetence… or it could have something to do with the way the ‘medical industrial complex’ is structured, putting the profit of the corporation ahead of the welfare of their patients.

Yes I do think there’s a ‘medical industrial complex’… (at least in a ‘de facto’, if not in a ‘de jure’ sense!) Do you have any idea how many billions of dollars are made each year by the pharmaceutical industry alone? And of course, in the USA (and, to a slightly lesser extent, even in the UK and here in Oz… though not for want of trying!) virtually all the hospitals are money-making concerns.
It has been said, not entirely without reason, that “…they’d rather TREAT an illness than CURE it!” You see, treating an illness is an on-going source of revenue, but cure a patient and he may never come back. The economic effects of this are not lost on hospital administrators, whose bosses are not the doctors, but the corporation(s) which own the hospitals and corporations care for nothing so much as their own ‘bottom line’.
This is not to say there are not many good and sincere doctors and nurses out there, but they are in a subordinate position and often have little say in the day-to-day running of the hospitals. (Or, they may be allowed their two-penn’orth for the sake of form, and then quickly over-ridden by the administrators…)
And then there’s the FDA, whose methods of vetting new drugs is considerably less than rigorous in its assessment of both effects and side-effects. Who wants to stop such a huge gravy-train?

This pub has been so far ahead of the times. We’ve had a virtual pub for eleven years. We don’t have to shut down. The only pub in Australia still open to all. How good is that !

I don’t have that facility with my set up. Hubby’s does – new laptop last year replacing his 5 year old one which also had camera. All my gear is 10 year old PC. Except modem is new as of January 2020. Nice thought though.

What’s a ‘zoom pub’ Emm? I went to the library today to get a printout of a few song-sheets for a few new songs I’m learning and the bloody place is shut! This is getting ridiculous!
Btw, why do I have to sign in EVERY TIME I make a comment…? And I mean for EVERY SINGLE comment! Even if I tick the ‘keep me signed in’ box on the WordPress login page… Gets very tedious!

Zoom is a massively popular video conferencing App where anyone with reasonable bandwidth can see little moving pictures and sound from all participants in the session. App switches according to the speaker and also allows screen sharing.

Wouldn’t it be great/nice/comforting if we had a competent government ‘managing’ this virus disaster. The shocking lack of management when it was clear how bad the situation had already become. People allowed off a cruise ship and no check and no mandatory detention and same for those arriving by plane. Dutton’s border farce NOT KEEPING US SAFE, not protecting us. Still looking for rickety little boats and ignoring ships and planes full of potentially dangerous people. A dithering, grinning PM who can’t communicate.

It may not be exactly the same situation, Vivienne, but the risk of inflation (if not hyper-inflation) is still very real… Would you have liked to live in Germany during the Weimar Republic? (i.e. before WWII…) Or, if that’s not an accurate comparison, how about the USA during the Great Depression of the 1930s?

I was under the impression that NSW Health were responsible for allowing passengers to disembark the Ruby Princess. I don’t think that the Federal Government or Border Force were involved until after the passengers had disembarked. This was based on the fact that the ship had only cruised between Australia and NSW, although it had been rated as ‘high risk’ for Corona virus after it’s last voyage.
What sort of f(*&wit would have embarked on a cruise anytime after the middle of January?
The other suspicious factor was that it arrived at night, and had everybody off the ship before business hours the next day.

A good solid stand-by is Spam or tinned corned beef. It stood the test of time and i’s lubricating jelly helps constipation from all the self-isolating and sitting around. Oddly enough, Aldi still has it, so go out and get some.

Locking down not really a prob here. Been confined to helping Hubby for over two years. Only now I can’t make my weekly visit to see grandkids and arrive with cooked seafood lunch – the littlies love homemade calamari from my fishshop (freshly made and bloody delicious). I’m doing the IGA and Dan Murphys and going to the tip and that’s it. Oh, still have visits to Hospital (two scans last week) and we await what’s happening with immunotherapy.

Covid 19 seems to have finally caught up with Smithfield Plains… our local Coles has so many empty shelves now it’s beginning to look like the old USSR. Did my shopping today, since I don’t have the virus (or so the hotline tells me!) and at least managed to get most of what I need.
What annoys me about these shortages is that it’s not as if there are any actual shortage of food or other household items (like bog rolls, for example!) The shortages just wouldn’t happen at all if it were not for selfish idiots stocking up unnecessarily.
“Unnecessarily?” I hear someone ask… “YES!” I answer, in strident tones! “Bloody unnecessary, as those who catch the virus and have to self-isolate can easily order online (or over the phone, I suppose) and have their groceries delivered.”
“Oh!” but I hear that same selfish moron object, “There’s a fee for home delivery!”
Well, yes there is, but when you consider what the laws of ‘supply and demand’ will do for any shortages of consumer goods, that $10 fee (or whatever it is) will be more than made up for by increased prices on whatever is in high demand and short supply…

My IGA has been rationing stuff for 1.5 weeks. The loo paper and tissues are still either not there or a limited amount of unknown branded stuff appears. They can’t get their usual stocks. No flour, no pasta and lot of tinned stuff all gone. We’re still getting non village shoppers.

I saw last week that Young was invaded by bus loads of ‘city types’ who bought out the town. Aldi closed at midday after telling them all to f*&^ off back to their caffeine free, non-dairy lattes.

I mentioned that on the Guardian as it happened at Rutherglen (as told to me by check out lady Belinda whom I’ve known for ten years – the bus was full of Chinese and they tried the same a bit further along at Corowa but Rutherglen warned them and they were turned away). Some people think all this was a racist rumour. I don’t think it was. But plenty of people have raided and hoarded. Can’t get away with it now. I had to resort to buying a lot of panadol/paracetamol when I had the chance and glad I did as the stuff is disappearing. Hubby needs to take lot and we get through it like peanuts (or so it seems).

Mum’s pharmacist seems to have put basic analgesia aside for his regular customers, but the supermarkets don’t seem to have any stock. Perhaps with hubby’s history your local pharmacy could do the same. Earlier this week I took Mum ‘panic shopping’ because ‘everything is jumping off the shelves’, which always gets downgraded to weekly shopping when she sees just how much is available. Anyhoo, no chicken, veal etc, only scotch fillet and lamb. Thursday they had the normal range of meats. Go figure.
There is some talk about legislating against profiteering from hoarding, but I doubt the police will have time to prosecute this if they are busy monitoring peoples distancing.

I haven’t seen a roll of the Howards on the shelf for weeks now, we have enough here though. It might be available during the pensioners hour, but I’m not going at that hour even though I can. I don’t get it, there is plenty of fresh food on the shelves. Even our fruit shop and butcher have plenty on the shelves. At times though it’s a question of supply
As for country towns and villages, the owners of the supermarket should deny those they don’t recognise, unless it’s with good cause.

Last week there were a couple of days where it went berserk for them, the shop almost stripped of meat, went for a couple of days then settled down. The fruit shop said much the same. Plenty he hasn’t seen before passing through, yet yesterday he was quiet. Yep I agree some people.

Worse than that, though… I think I’ve caught the Dreaded Lurgie!
Yesterday I was coughing and sneezing a bit… not much… just enough to worry me. And I’ve been aching all over too. But I’d put that down to my new exercise class… which may well be where I caught the damn thing. Not sure if it’s a cold or mild ‘flu, or the dreaded COVID lurgie…
I don’t feel all that bad. Just not 100% (Well… tbh I’ve not felt 100% since my accident; let’s say I don’t feel my usual 70% or so…)
Not sure what to do… probably self-isolate for a while. Which basically means no more exercise for a month, I suppose, and I’ll have to order my groceries online and have them delivered. And I suppose I should phone Aimee to tell her not to come in to clean my house for the next couple of fortnights… (That’s another possible source of infection, actually… she may have it herself, as she works at the RAH!)
I don’t want to go to the doctors ’cause the waiting room is usually pretty crowded… but I suppose I’d better phone them and see if I can take the test. Wonder if they’re doing house-calls to minimize infection spreading in waiting rooms?
Funny thing is, even though I don’t feel very well, I really don’t feel too bad, either. Just a bit achy, and a slight headache this afternoon.
Anyway, don’t come too close! (Rings hand-bell loudly!) UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN! 😦

OK Asty, my cousin Terry had this experience…. sore throat, cough, lots of cough, chest pain, snotty nose. Emmlet 1 advised him to go to emergency and report the chest pain, which in old farts is always taken seriously – could be a heart attack or in Terry’s case pneumonia or pleurisy- both also potential killers. Heart attack suspected ? Go to the top of the queue.
Terry was isolated, had a cardio gram and X-ray – nothing. Blood tests – for damaged heart proteins – nope. Corvid-19 swabs ! Took 3 days to report- but came back negative. Diagnosis- pain most likely some torn intercostal muscles (between ribs). Terry had no elevated temperature. Most likely he did have a severe cold.
Terry said that people showing up in emergency coughing were masked up and tested in an annex outside of the hospital. But there is a long backlog of test result reporting – unless clearly in danger, patients were being sent home with ventolin and sometimes steroids.

For anyone else who thinks they may need a test, here it is: 1800 020 080.
They’ll ask you a few questions about your symptoms and assess whether you need the test…
Turns out, I don’t even need the test… I’ve probably just caught a bit of a cold.
Mind you, the fact that the Irish Club is closed is still a bit worrying, but they’re closing just about everything now, out of sheer paranoia I suspect… (and yes, I know… takes one to know one!)

Here in Newcastle there are roving throat swabbers who will come to your house dressed up as alien invaders from a bad fifties sci fi film and perform the necessary screening tests. I assume that you can ring the GP practice to organise it. In the mean time, fluids, paracetamol , Netflix, You Tube, cryptic crosswords…..

I wish that were the case, M… but the fact is the USA have been cultivating the plague and lots of other nasties, including smallpox, in labs to use as biological weapons. (Or, supposedly, to study how to ‘prevent’ them from being used as biological weapons… good cover story, huh?) Besides, from those conditions, you might expect all sorts of hepatitis, typhus and that sort of disease… which is nasty enough… but plague? No… that virus has to come from somewhere first! Rumor has it that it has ‘leaked’ out from the labs… now whether or not that ‘leak’ was an accident or a controlled experiment on the local population is open to question, I suppose… But remember, the USA HAS been conducting all kinds of biological and psychological experiments on its own populace in secret for decades! (See, for example, MKUltra! Not to mention the ‘chem-trails’… so we KNOW it DOES happen. This is not ‘conspiracy theory’… it is conspiracy FACT!) We’re not in Kansas any more, Toto!
