Merv’s been having reception problems with the TV in the public bar again.
This time, according to Manne, the Pig’s Arms is channelling the 1960s.
Manne put on the VCR and captured this gem…..
Stick with it and see an evil scientist with a South African accent and Lorraine Bayly doing calisthenics !
Who’s the cross dresser?

Don’t know about adjusting my set, I think I need to adjust my underpants after watching Ms Bailey!
I agree with MJ. Wouldn’t there be some sort of ‘spaceport’ for picking up passengers?
They certainly make ‘Thunderbirds’ look like Oscar winners.

I just noticed the bit where the astronaut is waiting patiently WITH HIS SUITCASE ! Just like a country airport !
And the really fruity introduction …. Allan Debreck ….. David Carmichael ! Surprising it wasn’t David Fitzpatrick.
Pointing…. “That’s a pretty old (pair of overalls) space suit !” “I prefer it” (uncomfortable silence).
Funny beyond.

Wow! If that was an example of early Ozzie sci-fi TV I’m glad I spent my earlier years in the northern hemisphere… in the UK not only did we have Dr Who and the Daleks (note sp. MJ), but we also had Supercar, Space Patrol, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Captain Scarlett and Thunderbirds… and although these were all puppet shows, not only were the stories much better written, but the marionettes were also much more expressive than some of these wooden characters, with the notable exception of the lovely Ms Bayley, of course.

You need to watch the whole episode with Henry the neurotic computer and Alice the talking clock (alice has a french accent). Henry of course has fallen in love with Alice who is under the control of the evil scientist. Episode 6 is worth a watch also.

You seem to know a lot about it Algy? Some history there?

No, I went onto YouTube and watched the whole episode (in 3 parts) they also had episode 6 which I also watched. Apparently, it led to other programs like Vega 4 and Phoenix 5 using the same sets with different actors.
Henry the robot got over his neurosis because they talked and treated him nicely. It all seems quite innocent, with the odd double entendre. You’ll need to watch the whole episode to see Henry and Alice. Alice is under the control of the evil Partabeeno.
Like emm, I loved the bit with astronaut waiting with suitcase to be picked up, though my thought was a bus stop. The senior council seems quite butch too.

Off to calisthenics classes with you MJ. You need a strong heart to watch the video safely.

True. The first few seconds of Lorraine’s head shot had me thinking of something completely different.
There are some other excellently awful clips in follow-up series like Phoenix Five. Watch them if you dare – they make the early Dr Who Daleks look incredibly high-tech.
Next I’m planning some old Hoges and maybe some ABC GTK. Stay tuna.
