The Real Thing

I first saw Midnight Oil at the Avalon RSL. Must have been early 1977(?) They were supporting Dragon if I remember correctly, and it’s quite possible I don’t. I enjoyed a drink and a smoke when I went out gigging in those days.
Peter still had hair then; sunblonde, thinning, shoulder length and very wispy as I recall, (see previous caveat). He was almost immobile during most of the bands performance, indeed he spent much of the time with his back to the crowd and his hands thrust into the pockets of a duffel coat or similar.
No one there that night could have possibly foreseen the spastic mannequin Peter’s stage persona would become, nor the powerhouse the band would explode into; but Dragon blew the roof off the dump that night, and over the next few years went on to successfully blow the roof off their careers, well the first bit anyway, while Midnite (“sic” the street poster for that night) Oil went on to become the Oils of suburban beer barn legend .
Strangely, the immobile, duffel coat, hands in pockets style of stage performance is also how I remember my first sight of Jimmy Barnes when Chisel, unknowns from Adelaide at that time, opened for …?, I really can’t remember, at a gig in a horribly reverberent school canteen somewhere way out in the westwern suburbs about the same time. After the gig Don Walker and I discussed Philip K Dick and the state of American science fiction while Jimmy had a quiet drink. The first of many.
We were all just kids then.

My top No.1 all time favourite band. Midnight Oil are the best. I have Oils on Water as my all time fav concert. I’ve got the DVD and two other CDs.
I have 15GB per month and have no problems – two computers in house use same – hubby downloads a lot of stuff. So far not gone over the limit.

I like them Viv, local connection to Peter Garrett in part who grew up in the same area I did. 10 to 1 would be my favourite.

I’ve had to stop playing as rugby is on and Australia is thrashing France – wonderful new young captain/coach.

He’s the same age as Junior,

Great list, Algernon. Yes, I think that vids chew up a fair bit of one’s download limit, especially when there’s a teenager in the house who thinks it all comes down the wire for free.

Don’t I know that Big, Last year we went over the limit on six occasions sometimes with 10 days to go. We have 200 gig (personally I don’t need that much, it’s more for the students), I couldn’t understand why and got then IT student onto it. In the end it was a data download on one of his computers that was causing it, which he promptly turned off. Problem gone. Mind you Got one who is on uni hols and spend an inordinate amount of time. on it.

I empathise. the one ‘going’ to uni never actually ‘goes’ to lectures, in spite of us living within walking distance, as they video all lectures and publish them on the their web site immediately. Plus all of that gaming.

Never forget the gaming, if its not gaming its on youtube working on gaming.

Yes, mine will watch vids of people playing playstation games…bloody waste of time. The eldest was the worst. World of Warcraft four to six hours a night, then ‘serious gaming time’ on the weekends. I told him once to get outside and look at nature. His reply was that he had seen nature, and wasn’t impressed.

So does mine, its serious gaming time during the break I tell you. At least mine gets out an runs around occasionally, then back to gaming.

We’ve gone to 40 gig, 20 in peak time midday to midnight, 20 in economy time, the rest, and we go over every month. We are over now, with a few days to go. I have been doing some online courses, which have fairly big video lectures, so, I’m partially to blame.

Someone I was working for persuaded me they were giving me a paid up business copy of Windows. Heaving braggart. I asked him three times if this was legit. He told me it was one of five copies they bought (worth a lot). No, an interminable locked into a grid with everybody feeding off your system thing. I was way over two months in a row. Paid up. I was beside myself when I found out every Tom, Dick and Mary was finding profit out of my system and account. Alleged slice of the business empire scam. Makes me so mad to think on him. Creeeeeeep.

I only get 5 gig now. Youtube chews download so when you post your lists I generally only listen to the ones I am unfamiliar with but again keep up the good work and you obviously have a passion for it. On my blog I am reviewing albums that I like and highlighting my favourite track just to be a little different. You may like this

That’s a small download Hung. I’m assuming that’s monthly. I’ll go and have a look.
I do enjoy it Hung, I like exploring stuff that I once listened to and come up with some surprising results at times. 60’s garage punk is something I look at a bit lately its not to everybody’s tastes though. At other times what happens during the week sometimes guides me.

Yeah, I dropped down to 5 gig a month after the family left. It has been enough until recently. The News Ltd site I use is hungry as well. I will probably have to go to the next level.

Mines more a legacy from my business and with children at Uni as well as HSC. If it was just Mrs A and I 20-25 gig would be more than enough. I’ve tracked before when there was only the two of us that the usage is very tiny. When they’ve gone over an choked its painful to use.
