SolarPanels_600x399

Simulation only – this house has a LOT of panels for a domestic dwelling !

A Powerful Story by Emmjay

So we’ve had our solar power installation for about six months now – in Sydney, on a  fairly flat second storey roof with no shading – until late afternoon.  It’s a 5 KW rated system with 20 panels, but it’s got to be a super sunny day to get much over 4 KW… AND if its a stinking hot day, the panels become less efficient and so there are limits in how much juice we can expect even on a good day.

Wet and rainy ?  Lucky to be making 1 KW.  That’s not completely tragic, but it’s not a massive win.

I’ve seen the power production fluctuate significantly with even a single cloud passing – dropping the power from 3.5KW down to 1.5KW.  But the rises and falls happen pretty quickly.

How do the economics look ?  Twenty panels is a fairly meaty system for a domestic dwelling – many houses you will see in the inner west of Sydney have seven panels ~ making about 1.5KW. This isn’t going to roll back climate change, but provides a good feeling, if not much actual juice.

The cost for FM and I off the bat was just under ten grand.  But there was a rebate that brought the cost down to about $6,500 – that went straight onto the mortgage.  For most Sydney mortgages, an increase of this size results in an almost undetectable increase in the monthly payout.

Here’s a table that tells our solar story.
Power

When we’re out, and the house is using very little power, on a bright sunny day, we sell power back into the grid (no cash, just a reduction in our bills).  We make about 20c per hour.  So no Ferrari coming before I die, but over the summer quarter we reduced our power bill by about 40% – and remember this was a pretty wet, rainy time – not a great solar opportunity.  Power we put back into the grid reduced the bill by about 10% – so the rest of the savings came from displacing purchased power.  If we can maintain these savings the system will pay for itself in three years or less.  Maybe two years if the coming El Nino is a bad one.

You can guess that the best strategy is to try to balance our consumption with either our production and shift usage into the lower cost shoulder – or best – off-peak if we can.   If we’re making say 3 KW /hr , that covers a many of our appliances, but it would be foolish to imagine that it would be OK to run the dishwasher, washing machine and drier all at once. Pick one – and there’s a good chance we will not need to buy power.  Note, we have gas hot water – if you have electric hot water, the whole game changes.

Of course the elephant in the room is that the peak rate is still in force when we get home from work and the solar system has put on its jamies and gone to bed.  Solution – battery storage !

Not, not yet, friends.  Had we gone to a system with lead acetate batteries, the whole show would have cost around $30,000.  Not ever going to be economical.

But there is a glimmer of hope. Last week Elon Musk – the billionaire boss of Tesla (those wonderful fully electric cars that can get down the standing quarter as fast as a Ferrari – and when driven reasonably can go for up to 400km on a charge.  They aren’t cheap $90-110,ooo AND the charge takes hours – and costs about $25 at home – but they ARE beautifully engineered and look the part.  Sorry, where was I – oh yes batteries – and Tesla. Tesla is building a massive fully self-powered lithium battery plant – and they will start selling the domestic Tesla PowerWall later this year.

These are brilliant !  Most families will need one or two domestic models – there are also industrial models.  There is a lot of speculation about actual pricing in Australia, but the suggestion that seems to be sticking is that the lithium storage will cost about one third of the cost of lead acetate batteries.  And be smaller, easier to maintain and a lot more environmentally friendly.

And this will give consumers the choice of whether they go off-grid (maybe not on day one, I suggest) – or whether they use the PowerWall to store solar power for use when it’s dark – or even to charge itself up at off-peak rates.

The nay sayers (heaven forbid to suggest they are apologists for big coal) are going ballistic about the thought that this will cause a massive hit on the coal-fired generators – who have engineered their businesses for peak loads that (if the domestic and commercial storage economics work out) will leave the generators high and dry with a disappearing peak rate market.  They are bagging Tesla out because they say that Tesla is not yet profitable – but one suspects that Elon Musk does have pretty deep pockets – and big ideas that will continue to be game changers.

I have this sincere hope that the days of big coal – even peak coal – are coming to an end-  an end that is in sight – hoping again that it’s in time to slow climate change.  And of course, I hope the declining power bills will keep on keeping on.

Story by Emmjay

In even later breaking news than the last time the Pig’s Arms broke wind news, We can reveal now that Craig Emerson, the Member for Skyhooks will throw his hat into the ring for the position of Australian Prime Minister.

I can bust all the moves a great national leader and a towering presence on the world stage should be able to bust, and I can rock with the best of them.

Unaware that Craig was not actually a member of the Libnats, and in fact was an ALP member, Libnat stalwart Peta Incrediblin was quoted as saying that “I can work with this man – he’s got a million dollar riff!”.

Mr Emerson was available for comment, but nobody could be bothered to ask him for one. If they had asked him, he was going to point out how good he looks in front of the Australian flag and remind people that he was woman friendly – unlike other PMs known for their miso generosity. In his press release he had cool stuff like “Break it down, chillen” and “Rock my cabinet, straight to the bar”.

Story by Emmjay

In early breaking news this evening, sources close to the Pig’s Arms political commentator, Uhl Chrisman on the 5:45 from Lake George revealed that the fossilised remains of the former Liberal grate, Sir Billy McMahon would be running for the vacant   soon to be vacant position of vacant Prime Minister.

Legend has it that Sir Billy McMahon was about as vacant as anyone could be and he was therefore the ideal candidate to fill Tony’s still steaming shoes.

Impressed by the seriously concrete nature of the recumbent incumbent candidate, commentators thought it the best chance the Libnats have of cementing themselves in government.  And it was generally agreed that the fossilised remains of Sir Billy would bring a tried and true kind of stability upon which a “steady as you go” government could be built.

Sir Billy’s fossilised remains were unavailable for comment.

Tony Abbott Wakes With Nagging Feeling He Gave A British Monarch A Knighthood Yesterday

By The Shovel on January 27, 2015

Story by the Shovel

Prime Minister Tony Abbott woke up this morning with a thumping headache and a vague recollection of awarding a racist Greek Prince Australia’s highest honour.

Frantically texting friends to see if he really had made a total tit of himself, Mr Abbott was by late morning starting to piece together just what happened on Australia Day.

A Liberal party confidant, who did not wish to be named, said he broke the truth gently to Mr Abbott.

“I told him, ‘yes you may have given Prince Philip a knighthood on the spur of the moment. But don’t worry about it too much. Most people probably didn’t notice or have forgotten about it already anyway. No-one’s really talking about it today’”.

Another insider said the last he saw of Mr Abbott yesterday, the Prime Minister was riding around on a make-believe horse, wearing nothing but a paper crown and shouting ‘close the drawbridge and man the cannons!’

Those close to Mr Abbott say he has a reputation for hitting it pretty hard. In 2013 he ran a 4-week election campaign bender and later couldn’t remember anything he said.

The Next Medicare Dipstick - Andrew Laming

The Next Medicare Dipstick – Andrew Laming

Story by Emmjay.

Last week the Shovel took a really big (and hilarious) dump on this week’s government changes to Medicare.  He said that they were already working on next week’s Medicare Policy and it was only Wednesday.

Today the ABC reported that some Queensland near-sight specialist GP was urging the government to crackdown on cowboy doctors.

What could he be thinking ?

Now, I’m not one to sanction the animal cruelty of the Rodeo, but I don’t think that’s any reason to crack the whip on cowboy doctors.  Cowboys, like everyone else have a citizens rights to Medicare, notwithstanding that they flog animals – apparently for public amusement.

I’m predicting that this will be yet another policy the government has to scrap.

I had a mate whose dog was called “scraps” – after his favourite food source.  I reckon he’d grow pretty fat on the scrapped policies of this abject excuse for a government.

Now, what were the enlightened policies of this elected cess pit ?  Scrapping the carbon tax ?  Scrapping the mining tax ?  Scrapping the scrapping tax ?

Scrappyity, scrappity scrap.

So FM and I went to see Bill Murray in St Vincent (do go and see it, it’s pretty funny) and there was an advertisement for a bank.  The advertisement said “Bring us your vision, big and small and we’ll back you”.  The message was for entrepreneurs – give us (the bank) your best ideas for developing Australia’s future and we’ll make the investment.

What ?  Like in tertiary education ?  Sustainable energy ?

It’s a sad day when one of the major banks makes a lot more sense than an elected government.  They have a policy – it’s called promoting growth initiatives.

Maybe the Abbott cabal could find some way to scrap that .  Or maybe, in good time, we can scrap them.  If only Labor had a leader 😦

Scrappyity, scrappity scrap.

leigh and Tony

Story by Emmjay

In late barking news today, the Pig’s Arms cub reporter Manne O’Manne reports this report:

Australia has a new PM !

After months of speculation and rumours, Tony Abbott finally admitted that he and Country Joe and the Fish had no effing clue about how to run the country.

Abbott is reported to have said ” I give up Leigh.  You talk to lots of people.  You’re a pretty smart chicky babe.  What should we do to run this country ?”

Quick as a whip, Leigh hit him with another penetrating question ” Have you ever swum at Portsea , Tone ?”

“No”, replied Tone.

“How about I mind the shop while you iron man a couple of laps ?”

“Can Jumping’ Joe come too ?”, said Tone.

“Sure”, said Leigh. “Tell him to watch out for Japanese harpoons”.

“OK, deal !” said Tone, pulled on his goggles and snorkel and headed off for his big salty adventure.

“Right”, said Leigh. “Get me Credlin.  Credlin ? Yes. Yes. No. What part of ‘fuck right off’ don’t you understand ?”

“Now get me Matthias Kormann.  Matty, boy ? No, it’s about the ABC.  That’s right, I said TRIPLE the ABC budget, and while you’re at it, send ten bucks to the CSIRO – we need more of that sciency stuff”.

“Uhlmann ?  No, I definitely think we need to strengthen the ABC office in Baghdad.  Of course ! You the man, Uhlmann.  Why wait until tomorrow ?  Right.  Right.  Bye “

aside to camera:  “Piece of cake.”
